Chapter 39: Chapter 40: Altered Memories
After a fruitless night, Feng Yu decided not to wander around anymore and planned to continue staking out tomorrow.
There was nothing he could do; he lacked any special perceptive abilities, making it difficult to track the Demon's trail.
Moreover, the people in this small town gave Feng Yu a strange feeling, though he couldn't quite pinpoint what it was. It just had a peculiar atmosphere.
If he had to describe it, Feng Yu felt that the town was almost too harmonious.
"Forget it, it's almost dawn. The Demon probably won't show up, so I might as well get some sleep..." Feng Yu shook his head and said regretfully.
He then picked up Xiao Bai and lay down on the bed, closing his eyes to rest.
Although he didn't feel any mental fatigue, he still enjoyed lying on the bed.
Soon, the sun rose.
The bright light shone into the room.
Xiao Bai's ears twitched as he opened his eyes and looked curiously at a figure outside the door.
The figure stopped outside, standing still for a moment, and then quietly left.
"Did it leave?" Feng Yu, who had been resting with his eyes closed, slowly opened them and spoke.
He then went outside to follow.
Soon, Feng Yu realized who the figure outside the door was.
It was the young girl from the hotel reception.
He remembered her name was something like Jie Yu Youyi.
Just when he thought that Jie Yu Youyi had left after checking the rooms like any normal person, a loud voice and sounds of shouting came from somewhere.
"You useless fool! You can't even handle something this simple, what good are you?!"
"I'm sorry, please forgive me... I promise I'll succeed tonight..." Jie Yu Youyi begged through her tears.
"Tonight is your last chance! If you fail again, you'll wish you were dead!"
Then came the sound of a heavy object hitting the ground.
At this point, Feng Yu had already jumped onto the roof to avoid being detected. From his concealed position, he watched quietly.
Jie Yu Youyi was lying on the ground, her clothes torn, and blood had soaked through her kimono. Her eyes were vacant, unmoving.
If it weren't for the tears constantly streaming down her face, Feng Yu would have thought she was already dead.
"Xi Zi... I don't want to make another mistake..." Jie Yu Youyi murmured.
"Who is Xi Zi..." Feng Yu wondered. He decided to see what this woman would do tonight. He felt that Xi Zi, the name she mentioned, might be related to the Demon...
With that in mind, Feng Yu left Xiao Bai to continue watching Jie Yu Youyi while he quickly returned to his room. He had seen the hotel owner heading toward his room.
"Honored guest, are you awake?"
The voice of the hotel owner came from outside.
"What is it?" Feng Yu replied.
"It's like this, guest. Today is our town's gathering day, and the streets will be much livelier. Since you're an outsider, I thought you might want to experience a unique feature of our town. If you'd rather not participate, I won't disturb you."
The hotel owner spoke respectfully.
"I understand. I'll go take a look later," Feng Yu said.
"Very well, honored guest. If you need anything, please don't hesitate to inform me…" After saying that, the shadow of the hotel owner disappeared.
"I'll see what kind of scheme you're up to!" Feng Yu quickly stood up and left the room.
Once outside, it was even livelier than yesterday.
At this moment, Xiao Bai came over, and as soon as he saw Feng Yu, he leapt into his arms.
Xiao Bai then relayed what had happened with Jie Yu Youyi.
"She didn't do anything... sigh, I'm trying to hunt a Demon, and I end up looking like Sherlock Holmes. I just want to kill the Demon simply..." Feng Yu shook his head helplessly.
Suddenly, he heard a crying voice.
"Mother, why don't you remember Father anymore... He was with us just yesterday... Why don't you remember him..."
Feng Yu, walking through the crowd, noticed a crying little girl, clutching a woman in luxurious clothes, refusing to let go.
"Child, are you out of your mind? Your father passed away when you were very young…" The woman, dressed in luxury, turned around and comforted the girl.
"Xi Gong, sweetie, I know you miss your father, but he really passed away when you were small..." the woman said softly.
"No, it's impossible... Mother, Father was still living with us… Why are you saying Father is already dead?" the girl cried.
"You're lying... woo woo woo..." The little girl fell to the ground and started rolling in agony.
The people passing by stopped to watch, much like the bystanders in the past.
"What's wrong with this child? I remember their father passed away a long time ago..."
"I think this girl must have been enchanted by a demon, which is why she's acting like this..."
"That's so scary..."
"We better leave quickly; it's not good to get involved in this..."
"Yes, yes, let's leave this place..."
The onlookers quickly fled the scene, as if trying to avoid a plague.
Only the mother and daughter remained standing there.
"Xi Gong, Mommy has to go to work. If you don't let go, I'm going to get angry!" The woman's face showed anger. With a forceful toss, she threw the girl aside and walked away without looking back.
"Mother!" the girl cried, looking after her as she left. "Mother, why don't you remember Father? Why does everyone forget about him..."
Feng Yu approached the crying girl and gently extended a hand to help her up.
"Can you tell me what happened?" Feng Yu asked softly.
The little girl looked up and cried, "Everyone has forgotten my father... This always happens... Every time, someone forgets... Only I remember... woo woo woo."
"Xiao Xin... Xiao Ya... They're all forgotten by everyone... Only I remember..."
The girl, named Xi Gong, cried even more bitterly.
"Alright, stop crying for now. Tell me what happened. Maybe I can help you," Feng Yu said as he wiped her tears and, seeing that she had stopped crying, took out a piece of candy from his system space and gave it to her.
"Brother... this tastes so good..." the girl exclaimed with surprise.
"If you tell me about your father, Xiao Xin, and Xiao Ya, I'll give you all the candy," Feng Yu said, pulling out a whole bag of candy.
"Brother, do you believe me?" Xi Gong asked, with tears still in her eyes.
"Mm, I believe you," Feng Yu smiled.
Xi Gong then told him about her father, Xiao Xin, and Xiao Ya.
"I see... So, everyone has forgotten about them, but you still remember?" Feng Yu frowned.
"Yes, big brother. Can you help me find my father? He promised to go to the gathering with me today, but now he's gone..." Xi Gong sobbed.
"I don't want my father to disappear like Xiao Xin and Xiao Ya..."
"Stop crying for now. I'll help you with this," Feng Yu comforted her.
"So, when someone goes missing, their memory also disappears?" Feng Yu thought deeply.
As he looked at the girl in front of him, something about her seemed oddly familiar...
"This girl... Could she be the daughter of the drunk man from last night? So, the father she's talking about..." Feng Yu felt a headache coming on. He didn't expect to encounter someone so coincidentally.
"But my memory still clearly holds the image of that man..."
