Chapter 36: Chapter 36: Deviation
Russell was familiar with that look... it was the same one he used when he saw a panda for the first time...
"Can you guys stop looking at me like that? It's making me nervous!"
Damaging someone else's property and then compensating them... isn't that just common sense?
Don't most countries follow such legal and moral principles?
He clearly remembered that 'private property is sacred and inviolable' was a clause written in the U.S. law.
"Is that so? I'd really like to see you scared for once!" The one who spoke wasn't Jessica who sat across from Russell, but Heather, who had been sitting quietly beside him.
"Uh… never mind."
Russell always considered himself a fairly courageous person, but for some reason, his courage always seemed to evaporate in Heather's presence... {T/N: Bro is suffering from a severe case of Gwababa...}
After giving Jessica the location of their new base, Russell and Heather headed straight back to the newly acquired building.
As for the commissions he had given Jessica, he wasn't worried. He trusted her to handle them well.
When the duo returned to the new base and Heather walked in wearing her sharp suit, Russell noticed that every male in the building couldn't help but stare at her.
Well, 'almost' every male...
There were two exceptions... Dr. Wilson, who was more interested in research than women, and Heather's unreliable cousin, Allen.
As Russell walked past Allen, the latter let out a meaningful whistle.
Russell ignored him and instead approached Dr. Wilson, who was overseeing the installation of the lab.
"We've done some preliminary work, but turning this place into a proper lab will take a lot more effort and quite some time. We can't afford to rush this..."
Russell knew it couldn't be hurried, so he didn't pressure them to finish quickly, "Just follow the plan and take it step by step."
Dr. Wilson nodded silently and continued directing the lab setup.
Russell planned to leave matters like company licensing and lab preparation entirely to Dr. Wilson and his team.
He had no experience in these areas and no idea how to proceed.
Rather than micromanaging, it was better to leave these tasks to the professionals.
His job now was to protect this place and ensure Kingpin didn't cause any more trouble.
Time passed quickly, and before they knew it, Russell and his team had been living in Hell's Kitchen for over a week.
During that time, Dr. Wilson and the others had transformed the once-abandoned building into a functional facility.
They even hung a sign on the roof that read «Syndicate Bio»...
To Russell's surprise, the Kingpin seemed to have tacitly accepted their presence and hadn't caused any further trouble.
Even the gangs that had been operating nearby seemed to have relocated, likely at the Kingpin's request.
Russell didn't know if Fisk had some secret plan, but he remained vigilant, ready for a fight at any moment.
In addition, he received intelligence from both Jasper and Jessica.
Jasper sent him the information he had requested about Coulson's team, but couldn't find anything on the hacker Skye.
According to the intel, Coulson's mysterious team had already carried out several missions, but they hadn't crossed paths with Skye.
"Things really are different from what I remember..."
Russell clearly recalled that Coulson's special team's first mission had involved Skye and the hacker group 'Rising Tide'.
But now, it seemed the timeline had diverged from his memories.
When he first realized he had been transported to the Marvel Universe, he had worried about this very possibility.
If the timeline and events no longer matched his memories, he would lose his greatest advantage... foreknowledge.
What gave Russell confidence wasn't the 'DC Apostle System' or the enhancements from the Abomination Serum, but his understanding of this world's future.
But now, things were starting to deviate from his expectations.
After replying to Jasper's email and instructing him to continue monitoring Coulson's team, Russell pushed his concerns aside.
While the situation with Skye was unexpected, the fact that Tony had already battled the Extremis soldiers suggested that things were still within a controllable range.
The future might have changed somewhat, but it wasn't enough to cause him to panic... yet.
Aside from Jasper's intel, over the past week, Jessica had also delivered two batches of information on Kingpin.
For example, Kingpin had been staying in his 'Fisk Tower' recently, he had a secret base in the suburbs, and he was a skilled fighter who wielded a special cane.

Jessica also mentioned that Kingpin seemed to have made an enemy recently.
Someone had been sabotaging his operations, so Kingpin had been focusing all his efforts on finding this mysterious saboteur.
Reading this, Russell finally understood why Kingpin hadn't launched any attacks over the past week.
To Kingpin, he was just a stray wolf that had wandered into New York.
Sure, this wolf had killed a few of his dogs and showed signs of settling down in the city, but it hadn't yet threatened his core business.
Now, however, a mysterious figure was actively disrupting his operations, which was far more pressing for Kingpin than dealing with Russell.
In other words, Russell had only attacked Kingpin's underlings, while this other figure was targeting the Kingpin himself.
That's why Kingpin had temporarily let Russell off the hook, focusing all his energy on the person causing him significant financial losses.
Neither Kingpin nor Jessica knew who this mysterious figure was, but a name, or rather, a title flashed through Russell's mind.
"Daredevil. Matthew Michael Murdock."
There was no evidence to suggest that the person Kingpin was hunting was Daredevil, but Russell's instincts told him his guess was correct.
"Daredevil… would he have Fate Points?"
The enemy of my enemy is my friend. Since they both had a grudge against Kingpin, they could become allies.
Even if they couldn't be friends, they could at least work together.
After more than a week of recovery, the eight injured soldiers had regained their combat capabilities.
So now, in the newly renamed Syndicate building, there were 17 fully armed and highly experienced soldiers.
With them around, Russell didn't have to worry about ordinary gangs causing trouble.
As for more advanced threats, they had Allen the green mini-Hulk to handle those.
For some reason, he instinctively excluded Heather from the list of combat personnel.
With the building's security temporarily assured, Russell couldn't help but feel the urge to meet Daredevil...
