Chapter 1: Chapter 1: Rebecca!
Year 2076, Night City.
In the dead of night, within the desolate alleys of Watson's northern district, Ethan dragged his bullet-riddled body forward, each step an agonizing struggle.
Pain coursed through him like fire, threatening to consume his very will to live. Yet, if he wanted to survive, escape was his only option.
Behind him, cyber-enhanced brutes from the Animals gang pursued relentlessly, their gunfire illuminating the darkened streets. Each shot that whizzed past brought Ethan closer to his limits.
His luck finally ran out. A storm of bullets tore through his unaugmented lungs, causing him to stagger and collapse.
The sudden suffocation paralyzed him for two agonizing seconds, his chest heaving in vain.
But two seconds in Night City might as well be an eternity.
In that fleeting moment, a terrifying hail of bullets rained down behind him. Ethan barely registered the sound before his body was overwhelmed.
His limbs were shredded, his vital organs obliterated, his spine and skull perforated beyond repair.
The devastation left him a broken shell, slumped against a trash bin as his blood pooled around him.
Yet, against all odds, a faint spark of consciousness lingered. In those final moments, his mind raced through the fragmented memories of his brief life in this dystopian nightmare.
Two months ago, Ethan had awakened in Night City—only to realize he had been transported into the world of Cyberpunk 2077.
Starting as a Nomad, he entered the city's chaos with dreams of becoming a living legend. He had met iconic figures like Jackie, Vik, and Misty, and quickly teamed up with Jackie to take on gigs from fixers.
With his intimate knowledge of the game's plotlines, Ethan thought he could navigate the treacherous streets with ease.
But Night City was never that simple.
Earlier that night, Ethan had accepted a high-stakes mission from Rogue, a legendary fixer. The job: infiltrate an Arasaka security branch and steal a classified data chip.
Confident in his skills, he slipped into the facility undetected and secured the chip.
However, his luck faltered as reactivated security cameras captured his presence.
What followed was a relentless pursuit. Ethan fought valiantly, combining precise marksmanship and hacking prowess to neutralize several pursuers.
But the overwhelming force of his enemies drove him to the brink. Now, here he was, cornered and clinging to life.
Despair tightened its grip as Ethan prepared to accept his fate. But then—
A sharp, irritable voice rang through the alley, shattering the oppressive silence. It carried a tone so unmistakable, so familiar, that Ethan's fading vision snapped forward.
What he saw left him utterly dumbfounded.
Standing before him was a petite figure with porcelain skin, soft yet determined features, and striking pink tattoos etched across her neck, abdomen, and thigh.
She exuded an air of chaos and raw energy, and her vibrant presence seemed to defy the bleakness around her.
"Re… Rebecca?!" Ethan gasped, barely able to believe his eyes.
He had searched high and low for characters from Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, but to no avail. Yet here she was, materializing at his darkest hour.
"What the hell's your problem, huh?! Making a racket in the middle of the damn night!" Rebecca's irate voice echoed through the alley as she stepped forward, barefoot and clad in a black plastic nightgown.
Dual-wielding neon-green and pink automatic kinetic pistols, she wasted no time unleashing hell on Ethan's pursuers.
The Animals gangsters, towering over her like cybernetic giants, didn't faze Rebecca in the slightest.
If anything, her audacity outmatched even the most reckless mercs. She charged into the fray, guns blazing, her petite frame a whirlwind of destruction.
Caught off guard by her sudden assault, the Animals faltered under the relentless barrage of bullets.
Their cyber-enhanced bodies couldn't withstand the precision and firepower of Rebecca's twin pistols.
Chaos erupted in the alley as several gang members fell, their blood painting the walls.
A towering figure, over two meters tall and built like a sumo wrestler, stepped into the narrow alley.
The man's sharp, tailored suit seemed almost comical against his massive frame, yet the menace he exuded was undeniable.
"I am Masao Murakami, deputy chief of Arasaka Security for Watson District. Hand over the stolen chip immediately, or I'll take it off your corpses instead," he declared, his tone dripping with the calculated authority of a seasoned corporate enforcer.
Murakami loosened the tie around his neck, revealing the black bulletproof cyberware plating embedded beneath his suit.
His hands—massive and menacing—glinted with the unmistakable chrome sheen of "Gorilla Arms" cybernetic implants.
Lying on the ground, Ethan turned his gaze toward the hulking figure. Activating his cybernetic eye, he attempted a quick scan of Murakami's system, only to find his hacking protocols utterly ineffective.
Worse yet, his HUD displayed a glowing red skull icon over Murakami—an unmistakable warning that this man was far beyond his level and could kill him effortlessly.
Ethan clenched his teeth. He already knew he wouldn't survive tonight, but he had no intention of dragging Rebecca down with him.
She didn't even know him. Her sudden involvement was nothing more than the result of being woken up by the racket in her own neighborhood, her short fuse compelling her to charge into the chaos.
Ethan hadn't expected his desperate escape to end so close to Rebecca's home. Nor had he ever dreamed of meeting her in person, especially not like this.
The memory of her tragic fate in Cyberpunk: Edgerunners resurfaced in his mind—her selfless charge alongside David into Arasaka Tower had left him deeply moved.
Witnessing her death at the hands of Adam Smasher had filled him with rage and sorrow, prompting him to hunt down Smasher repeatedly in the game.
But now wasn't the time for sentimentality. The situation was dire, and Ethan understood there was no way out for him.
Yet he couldn't let Rebecca meet an untimely end for reasons she didn't even understand.
As Ethan opened his mouth to explain that Rebecca had nothing to do with this, she beat him to it.
"Huh? What's this fat bastard rambling about? I've never seen you before, let alone stolen some chip," Rebecca snapped, her face twisting in confusion. She tossed her now-empty pistols onto the ground without hesitation.
