Chapter 8: Secrets of a New World
Waking up quickly from bed, Evan placed his feet on the floor and swiftly made his way toward the door leading out of his room. However, just before stepping outside, something caught his attention—the very decor of his room. He stopped in his tracks, taking a moment to truly look around, realizing that he had never properly examined the space where he would now be living.
"Hmmm..." he muttered, scanning the entire room, his gaze shifting from one piece of furniture to another. A slight grimace formed on his face as he spoke aloud, "Man... I really need to change this decor."
The room itself was quite ordinary, something he hadn't paid much attention to before. Measuring approximately 6 by 3 meters, it was neither too small nor too spacious—just a standard room. As for its furnishings, there was a bed about two meters long and seventy centimeters wide, placed in the top right corner of the room along the shorter wall. To the left of the bed stood a small table with a lantern holding a candle inside—an elegant Chinese-style lamp, much like the theme of the entire room.
In the lower left corner of the room, along the shorter wall, there was a low table with cushions placed on the floor (instead of chairs from chapter 2). On the table rested a single book and another lantern, identical to the one near his bed.
To the right, in the top right corner of the room, a large double window provided a view of the outside world. Against the wall near the window stood two cabinets—one larger and one smaller. The smaller cabinet was slightly ajar, revealing a few books inside that he would most likely read in the near future. Beside the cabinets, in the bottom right corner, stood a tall floor lamp, casting a soft glow over the area.
As Evan continued to observe his surroundings, contemplating possible changes, he suddenly recalled what he was supposed to do. Quickly turning toward the sliding door of his room, he stepped forward and placed his hand on the door, sliding it open to the left. Beyond the doorway, a room almost twice the size of his own was revealed—a spacious area that served as a dining and common room, complete with a large low table, various decorations, and even a small kitchen.
The moment his eyes landed on the people sitting at the table enjoying their breakfast, a faint, unconscious smile appeared on his face, and a warmth spread in his chest.
Hearing the sound of the door opening, the family members at the table turned their heads toward him. They greeted him with warm smiles, and a woman, his mother Sophia, dressed in a simple yet elegant outfit—a long gray tunic layered with a shorter pink tunic adorned with floral patterns—spoke with a gentle voice, "How did you sleep?"
Feeling no hint of nervousness, Evan smiled and replied, "Quite comfortably," though he remained standing still in place like a statue.
Noticing this, his father, a man dressed in a long black robe fastened with buttons, spoke in a calm but firm voice, "Why are you just standing there? Come eat. You barely had anything yesterday."
"Yeah, come eat, little brother!" David, his older brother, chimed in with a grin. Like their father, he also wore a long black robe with buttons and looked at Evan with bright, expectant eyes.
Hearing their words, Evan stepped forward, sitting down at the table in the same manner as the rest of them, trying his best to imitate their posture. However, just as he was about to start eating, a realization struck him like lightning—"Crap... I don't know how to use chopsticks!"
On the outside, his face remained neutral, but inside, he was in full panic mode.
"Think, think, think!" He was desperately trying to come up with a solution when suddenly, a voice interrupted his thoughts.
"Why aren't you eating?" David asked, looking at him with curiosity.
Snapping out of his internal panic, Evan turned to his brother and quickly said, "I... I don't know what to pick first."
Hearing this, David grinned and said, "That's all? If you don't know, I'll choose for you!" He immediately started placing various dishes onto Evan's plate.
Their parents, watching the interaction, smiled warmly and continued eating, unaware of the internal chaos in Evan's mind.
"What do I do?! What do I do?!" Evan screamed internally, until suddenly, an idea popped into his head. "The System!"
[How may I assist you, Host?] a monotone voice echoed in his mind.
"Give me information on how to use chopsticks... Quickly!" he commanded, still watching his brother pile food onto his plate.

A victorious smirk formed in Evan's mind just as David finished serving him food.
"Here you go! Enjoy your meal!" David said cheerfully, handing over the plate with a smile.
"Thanks, you too!" Evan responded with a grin before immediately digging into his food. Within moments, his plate was empty, and without hesitation, he began serving himself another portion.
His rapid eating pace did not go unnoticed. The rest of the family watched in stunned silence as he devoured his food like a starving man. Noticing their gazes, Evan swallowed a mouthful and, with his cheeks still full, mumbled, "Whaff? I waf hungry..."
At his words, the family members exchanged amused glances before Sophia, in her usual calm yet sharp tone, said, "Eat slowly."
Her piercing gaze spoke louder than words—"You better eat properly, or else!"
A bead of sweat rolled down Evan's forehead as he quickly straightened up and nodded. "Y-Yes, Mom!" he said, immediately slowing his eating pace.
Satisfied, Sophia smiled gently.
"Pffft—" William and David barely held back their laughter at the scene, but it was clear they were enjoying the moment.
Sophia, noticing their stifled chuckles, turned toward them with a slightly raised eyebrow. "And what exactly is so funny?" she asked, genuinely curious.
The father and the son quickly shook their heads and answered in unison, "Nothing!" before resuming their meal with forced seriousness.
Meanwhile, in his mind, Evan was pointing an accusatory finger at them. "What's so funny, huh?! The fact that my life just hung by a thread?!" he mentally shouted, though on the outside, he obediently continued his now much slower breakfast.
........
An hour later
After having breakfast and a brief conversation with the people who, since the previous day, had become his new family, Evan learned that the village was home to over 1400 inhabitants. He also discovered that within the village lived an elderly man who possessed a collection of more than 300 books—books that could provide Evan with a deeper understanding of the place he would now call home.
Sitting in his room, Evan found himself on the bed. "Hmmm..." He turned his head toward the small wooden table beside him and then stood up, walking toward it. Resting on the table was a book titled The Dragon's Testament. Upon seeing the title, a smile formed on Evan's face. Without hesitation, he leaned forward, sat down at the table, and picked up the book.
A few minutes later
"Hmmm... This book is actually quite interesting," he muttered to himself, already immersed in its contents by the twelfth page. However, after a brief moment, he closed the book and placed it back on the table before standing up.
"Interesting, yes... but just fantasy. Nothing truly useful," he remarked, gazing at the book for a moment before shifting his attention toward a small open shelf in the corner of the room. He had noticed several books there earlier.
Curious, he walked over and opened the shelf further, scanning the titles one by one.
"Hearts of Stone... probably some kind of romance," he mused, placing it back before continuing.
"The World in Numbers..." He paused, contemplating the title. It sounded intriguing, but he decided to return to it later.
"Lands That Do Not Exist... another one. But is it fantasy, or real geography? Hmmm... I'll check it out later. There are still five more books left to go through," he muttered, examining the book in his hand before setting it aside and moving on.
"The Last Phoenix Flame... Another fantasy book—but I'll read it anyway," he said with a slight smirk. "After all... one must live." He chuckled softly as he placed the book down and moved on.
"When History Could Have Taken a Different Turn..."
"Forgotten Inventions..."
"The Essence of Dragons..."
"Hmmm... the last one. Maps That Changed the World... probably a book on the history of cartography. Well then... where should I begin?" he pondered aloud, looking at the stack of books before him.
After a brief moment of deliberation, he reached for one of the eight books he had set aside—The World in Numbers. He opened it and, still standing, began to read.
A few minutes later
"So, it's actual geography... But it's a shame there's no map included," he commented while continuing to read. He soon learned that he was living on an island near a continent—one of five continents on this planet. The continent was called Eldoria, and the island itself bore the name El'droe.
The remaining continents were as follows:
Vel'Tharis: The largest continent on the planet, with a small portion extending across the planet's equator.Solmar: The third-largest continent, though significantly smaller than Vel'Tharis—only about half its size.Zorathia: A continent nearly connected to Solmar, separated only by a narrow, elongated sea.Thamis: The final, smallest continent was located near Eldoria and Vel'Tharis. This landmass lay almost entirely on the planet's equator and was roughly six times smaller than Vel'Tharis.
As Evan absorbed this information, a single question formed in his mind—one he had yet to find an answer to within the book: How large is this planet?
He flipped through several more pages, hoping to find an answer, but none were forthcoming.
"Hmmm... Maybe I should ask the system?" he pondered before finally deciding. "System."
[Yes, host?] The robotic voice responded.
"How large is this planet compared to the previous one I lived on?" Evan asked, genuinely curious, expecting that perhaps this world was even smaller than Earth.
[Answering the query: This planet is eight times larger than your previous home,] the system stated matter-of-factly.
Hearing this, Evan's eyes widened in astonishment. He had never expected such an answer.
"Are you serious?" he asked, his voice laced with disbelief. Yet, considering everything he had experienced so far, he realized he shouldn't be too surprised.
[Yes.]
"Hmmm... Well, to be honest, that wasn't what I expected... but how is the gravity still similar?" he wondered aloud, assuming the gravitational pull was comparable because he felt no noticeable difference from Earth.
"Hmm... That should be enough from this book for now," he concluded, closing it and placing it back on the shelf. He then turned his gaze toward the remaining books and picked up the next one—Lands That Do Not Exist—before resuming his reading.
A few minutes later
"Huuu... Boring. But to sum it up, this book discusses ancient kingdoms, empires, and dynasties of this continent..." he muttered, slightly disappointed, having expected something more intriguing.
"Next," he declared, setting the book aside and picking up Maps That Changed the World.
Several minutes later
"Hmm... interesting, interesting... Unlike the previous one, this book at least doesn't dwell on conspiracy theories," he remarked while flipping to the next page.
He had now learned that this continent was home to only four great empires and one ruling dynasty. However, one surprising fact stood out—four of these empires controlled vast territories on the continent, while one empire even extended its rule beyond, onto Vel'Tharis.
The island he resided on was under the rule of one such empire—The Empire of the Dark Star, governed by Emperor Graham El'mor.
