Chapter 52: The Dragon God and Her New Roles
After spending a few days in the Dragon Maid world, the group activated the Dimensional Anchor and transported themselves—and the Eternal Snowfall—back to Earth.
Setsuna discovered that the Dimensional Anchor could even transport vehicles, provided every occupant on board passed identification. Otherwise, awkward situations could arise, like the vehicle vanishing while leaving the passengers behind.
"This is our capital, Constantinople," Setsuna announced after they landed.
He led the three dragon girls on a tour of his city.
The clean, wide streets, exotic architecture, and the curious sight of shipgirls and Bulins quickly captured their attention.
At the naval base, Tohru marveled at the sight of the Bulin fleet unloading supplies at the docks. After completing their tasks, the ships transformed into little girls who walked around the streets.
"Is this your magic?"
"It's magic shipping lanes. Impressive, right?" Setsuna replied.
Shipgirls could transform from ships into human forms. Similarly, dragon girls could transform from dragons into human forms. However, there were subtle differences—shipgirls retained their human forms even when summoning their main bodies but couldn't use their rigging, whereas dragons underwent a complete shapeshifting process between forms.
"This world seems to have abundant magical energy… though it's a bit peculiar."
"I don't need to create magic essence to sustain myself anymore," Lucoa said, sniffing the air. She could detect faint, unusual forces surrounding the city.
As a high-tier deity, Lucoa could replenish her magic even in mana-deprived worlds.
"Really?" Setsuna, unable to sense magical energy himself, glanced at the Heroic Spirits, who similarly felt nothing. Clearly, the dragons operated on an entirely different power system.
...
As they strolled through the city, numerous shipgirls and Bulins warmly greeted the group.
A cluster of destroyers quickly surrounded Kanna, brimming with curiosity about the small dragon girl.
"Wow, is your tail real or fake?"
"Your dragon horns are so cute! Can I touch them?"
Yukikaze peeked over, her ears twitching as if she couldn't resist.
"You can," Kanna replied with a nod, her gaze fixed on Yukikaze's cat-like ears.
"But I want to touch yours too!"
What followed was an adorable exchange between Kanna and the beast-eared destroyers, who took turns touching each other. Setsuna stood nearby, feeling like he might have a nosebleed from the overwhelming cuteness.
...
Behind a building, a black-haired, blue-eyed Royal Navy carrier dressed in steampunk attire peeked around the corner. She was intently watching Kanna and the destroyers playing together.
"Destroyers… squee!!!"
"A little dragon girl!!! Even cuter than destroyers… squee!!!"
"Ehehe, I wonder where she's staying…"
Her eyes sparkled with hearts as drool unconsciously dripped from her mouth.
...
Kanna suddenly shuddered, clutching Setsuna's leg.
"Commander, are there any weird people here?" she asked nervously.
"I feel like someone's watching me."
"No, no, everyone here is nice," Setsuna said, patting her head while subtly glancing around.
Then, he quietly instructed Formidable, "Send someone to detain Ark Royal. She's not allowed within 500 meters of Kanna ever again."
"Eh? That's sudden…" Formidable said, a bit surprised.
"Just trust me. If there's ever trouble involving destroyers or lolis, it's always Ark Royal. Arrest first, no questions asked."
...
After giving the dragon girls a comprehensive tour of the city's functional zones, Setsuna also assigned them residences.
With plenty of space to spare, each dragon received a large villa. Kanna and Tohru shared one, while Lucoa had her own.
Adjacent plots of land were reserved for future dragon arrivals.
The tour continued onward.
As they approached the Grand Library, Setsuna mentioned that the library housed technology and magic from other worlds. Lucoa's usual squinting expression changed, her eyes slightly opening in genuine interest.
"May I take a look inside?" she asked.
"Uh, sure, go ahead. This place is open to everyone, and there's no forbidden knowledge or anything…" Setsuna said as he led them into the massive domed structure.
He began introducing the various sections of the library.
"This area is for Azur Lane-related technology—things like Wisdom Cube production, rigging construction, and aircraft torpedo manufacturing."
"That section is for Demon Slayer. It's got techniques for the breathing styles and blood demon arts, though they're not much compared to your dragon magic."
"Over there is the Gundam section, covering the robots I can summon. And on the left are the Fate/Type-Moon archives…"
Tohru, uninterested, stifled a yawn, looking thoroughly bored.
Kanna, meanwhile, continued devouring the snacks fed to her by the shipgirls, not even glancing up.
Lucoa casually picked a few books, skimming through the Demon Slayer and Gundam materials. After flipping a few pages, she put them back with mild disinterest.
However, when she reached the Type-Moon and Azur Lane sections, her demeanor shifted.
Her eyes opened slightly, and she began reading through the books, page by page, with rapt attention.
"The Third Magic? Using a link to the Root for infinite mana? Interesting…"
"Summoning historical figures as heroic spirits to fight for you? Hmm, this doesn't seem to be necromancy…"
"Manifesting humanity's collective perception of an object? Is the Wisdom Cube a magical or technological construct?"
"A bit of both, I think," Setsuna interjected, finding the Azur Lane world's "scientific" endeavors to be strangely reliant on sheer belief.
It reminded him of the principle of you just have to believe hard enough.
"Will there be more books added here in the future?" Lucoa asked.
"Of course," Setsuna confirmed. "Every world I visit and all the knowledge I acquire will eventually be stored here. My goal is to make this a treasury of knowledge spanning the multiverse."
"If you have free time, maybe you could compile a few magical tomes to add here?" he suggested.
"I could pay you for your effort, or trade something in return if you prefer."
Setsuna was genuinely curious about the magic of Quetzalcoatl and the dragon girls. Even if he couldn't learn it himself, adding it to his collection seemed worthwhile. Who knew? It might be useful to someone in the future.
"Hmm…" Lucoa tilted her head, glancing around the library. After a moment of thought, her ever-smiling expression brightened.
"Sure. I can organize the magic from my world."
"With all kinds of spells, alchemy, and curses combined… a rough estimate? Maybe a few tens of thousands of volumes?"
"Whoa—" Setsuna was taken aback. As expected, the Dragon Maid world was full of hidden dragons.
Considering that Tohru, Lucoa, and even the yet-to-be-met Elma had world-ending powers, their magical systems were naturally extraordinary.
"But I have one condition," Lucoa said after a pause.
"Name it. As long as it's something I can do," Setsuna replied confidently.
"Let me work here as a librarian."
"I don't want to run around in other worlds—it's too much hassle. I just want to take a vacation, and staying here, reading books, sounds perfect," she said, spreading her hands with a mock look of exasperation.
Having lived through an unfathomable number of years, few things could pique Lucoa's interest anymore. Reading the strange and unique books of the multiverse was one of the few exceptions.
She truly had no interest in fighting or adventuring in other worlds. She just wanted to relax here and take it easy.
"…"
"Deal," Setsuna agreed without hesitation.
Since he couldn't exactly command a goddess like Lucoa, letting her manage the library seemed like a win-win situation.
Lucoa was Quetzalcoatl! While she might lack expertise in technology, there weren't many who could surpass her in the realm of magic.
If she wanted to take it easy, that was fine. Having her as a stay-at-home guardian deity was a great arrangement.
"Oh, by the way, would you mind taking on a student?" Setsuna suddenly asked.
"Ah? Well, I'm a dragon, but teaching a human some basic magic shouldn't be a problem…" Lucoa replied, a bit surprised.
"Excellent!" Setsuna clapped his hands.
"Bring me Ritsuka Fujimaru! Stop piloting Gundams and start learning some proper magic!"
...
After the tour, Lucoa moved into the Grand Library, fully treating it as her new home in this world.
Meanwhile, Tohru and Kanna accompanied Setsuna back to the administrative center.
"So…" Setsuna began, looking at the two dragon girls. "Do you have anything in mind for what you want to do next?"
"Kanna wants to go to school!" The white-haired dragon loli bounced excitedly.
"With Yukikaze, Ayanami, and Tai Yuan!"
Thanks to her similar mental age, Kanna quickly bonded with the destroyers, submarines, and other small shipgirls. She was especially intrigued by the naval base's school.
"Oh, that's easy," Setsuna said, summoning Yat Sen.
"Let her attend classes with the destroyers. Though we'll need to revise the curriculum a bit…"
"Add more cultural lessons—Kanna doesn't know much about human society."
The shipgirl courses primarily focused on naval warfare topics like cannon firing, torpedo deployment, and anti-submarine tactics. Clearly, these weren't suitable for Kanna. She needed to start with a proper elementary school curriculum.
"Understood. Chen Hai and Chen Hai can teach her," Yat Sen replied gracefully.
She bent down, patted Kanna's head, and handed her a packet of snacks. With a gentle smile, she asked, "Would you like me to show you the school and introduce you to your new classmates?"
"Yes!" Kanna happily skipped off, utterly charmed.
"What about me?" Tohru asked, feeling at loose ends.
She didn't want to be a librarian or go to school. Most of her skills were destructive in nature—great for fighting, useless for farming.
"How about becoming a maid?" Setsuna suggested, trying to steer the story back to its original trajectory. He had his heart set on a maid dragon.
"We have an entire Royal Maid Team here. You could join them."
Belfast pulled out a maid uniform.
"What do you think, Miss Dragon? Want to give it a try? I'll train you to become a proper Royal Maid."
"Oh? This looks interesting…" Tohru held the maid outfit up, examining it closely.
"What are a maid's responsibilities?" she asked.
"Taking care of the Commander's daily needs, assisting with routine tasks, preparing tea on time, cleaning, and eliminating any enemies that stand in the Commander's way…" Belfast listed confidently.
"…"
Tohru pondered for a moment before speaking up.
"Can I just handle the killing part?"
"?!"
"No, you cannot!!!" Belfast exclaimed, horrified.
