Chapter 16: escaping the masked soul taker

I knew I had to act fast, before Akira could make her move. I looked around the library, trying to come up with a plan. That's when I saw the villagers, going about their daily business, oblivious to the danger lurking among them.

I spotted a group of children playing outside, laughing and chasing each other. I also saw a group of farmers, hauling baskets of fresh produce into the village market. And I saw a group of elderly women, gathered around a large stone oven, baking bread and gossiping.

I knew I could use them as a diversion. I carefully positioned myself, trying not to draw attention to myself. Then, I made a loud noise, knocking over a nearby bookshelf.

The villagers immediately stopped what they were doing, looking around in confusion. Akira's eyes flicked towards the commotion, her gaze momentarily distracted from me.

That was all the time I needed. I took advantage of the distraction, slipping out of the library and into the crowd. I weaved in and out of the villagers, using them as cover as I made my way towards the forest.

Akira quickly recovered from the distraction, her eyes scanning the crowd as she searched for me. But I was already gone, disappearing into the trees like a ghost.

I didn't stop running until I was deep in the forest, the trees closing in around me like a protective shield. I finally slowed down, gasping for breath as I looked around.

I was surrounded by towering trees, their branches creaking in the wind. The air was filled with the sounds of birds chirping and leaves rustling. It was a peaceful, serene place, and I felt a sense of relief wash over me.

But I knew I couldn't stay here for long. Akira would be searching for me, and I had to be prepared. I looked around, trying to get my bearings.

That's when I saw a small clearing, surrounded by a ring of mushrooms. In the center of the clearing was a small, glowing stone. It pulsed with a soft, blue light, and I could feel its energy calling to me.

I approached the stone cautiously, sensing that it might be connected to the soul cultivation that Akira practiced. But as I drew closer, I realized that it was something different.

The stone was emitting a gentle, soothing energy that seemed to be calming my mind and body. I felt a sense of peace wash over me, and my breathing slowed.

Suddenly, I heard a rustling in the underbrush. I turned to see a small, furry creature emerging from the trees. It was a rabbit, its eyes shining with a soft, gentle light.

The rabbit approached me cautiously, its ears twitching as it sensed my energy. I reached out a hand, and to my surprise, the rabbit nuzzled my palm.

I felt a sense of connection to the rabbit, a sense of understanding that went beyond words. And in that moment, I realized that soul cultivation wasn't just about harnessing human souls.

It was also about harnessing the souls of animals, like this rabbit. And I knew that I had to learn more about this aspect of soul cultivation, if I was going to survive in this world.
