Chapter 16: The Nihility Forest.
The endless blood desert stretched all around Creed and Dagga, a sea of burning red sand under the crimson moon.
Both of them were running as fast as their legs could carry them, their breaths coming in ragged gasps.
Their bodies were drenched in sweat, exhaustion written on their faces, but their legs kept moving, driven by sheer determination.
Sand kicked up around their feet, clinging to their already tattered clothes and armour. Despite their fatigue, neither dared to slow down for fear of what was behind them.
Above them, a gigantic black crow soared lazily through the crimson sky. Its wings were so wide they seemed to block out the light, casting shadows over the desert.
It wasn't chasing them at full speed—it didn't need to. It followed them with the patience of a predator toying with its prey.
Every few minutes, it let out a deafening caw that echoed across the desert, making the air itself seem to tremble. Creed flinched every time he heard it, his heart pounding harder in his chest.
"How much longer, Dagga?" Creed's voice was hoarse, his throat parched from the desert's heat.
His chest heaved as he glanced nervously at the sky. His legs felt like they were about to give out.
"Soon," Dagga growled through clenched teeth, his voice thick with frustration and urgency. His pace didn't falter despite the obvious strain etched across his features.
Creed's thoughts spiralled into despair. His chest burned, his legs ached, and worse, he could feel the life energy in his core draining away.
His transformation, granted by the activation of his Nyxara Bloodline, flickered faintly within him like a flame about to be extinguished.
If he ran out, his demon like form would fade, and the crow would see him for what he truly was—a human.
That would bring a whole new level of disaster. He clenched his jaw and forced himself to keep running.
'I can't keep this up much longer,' Creed thought, his body screaming for rest. But he gritted his teeth and pushed forward, his fear outweighing his exhaustion.
Stopping wasn't an option. Not here. Not now.
"There!" Dagga's voice cut through his spiralling thoughts like a blade. "I found it!"
Creed squinted through the shimmering heat of the desert and followed Dagga's pointing claw.
Up ahead was a single withered tree standing in the middle of the wasteland. Its black, gnarled branches stretched into the sky like skeletal hands.
It looked ancient, like it had been there for centuries, weathering the harsh desert winds.
It was the only thing that broke the monotony of the endless sand—a ghostly figure in a desolate landscape.
"Don't stop running!" Dagga shouted, his voice filled with urgency.
Without hesitation, Dagga sprinted straight for the tree. Creed's eyes widened as he watched Dagga charge headfirst into the trunk—only to vanish as though the tree had swallowed him whole.
"What the—?" Creed's thoughts raced in disbelief. Was this some kind of magic? A hidden escape?
Despite the danger looming behind them, a flicker of excitement stirred in his chest. Was this their way out? Could they really escape?
The crow behind him let out another piercing caw, closer now, shaking him out of his shock. He clenched his fists and ran even faster toward the tree, his heart hammering in his chest. If Dagga had gone through, then so would he. There was no other choice.
The moment Creed reached the tree, he braced himself and leapt into the trunk. Everything around him shifted in an instant.
The world spun wildly, a chaotic blur of colours and motion. He felt as though his body was being twisted and pulled in every direction.
His stomach churned, and for a moment, he thought he might vomit.
Then, with a hard thud, Creed landed face-first on solid ground. The spinning stopped, but his head felt like it was still swirling.
He groaned, lying flat on the ground, too dizzy to move. His transformation flickered dangerously, the last remnants of his life energy struggling to hold.
Finally, he forced himself to sit up, gasping for air. The first thing he noticed was the chill in the air—it was cold, far colder than the desert had been.
The second thing he noticed was Dagga, standing a few feet away, his body tense and his claws ready.
He wasn't panting anymore. Instead, he was still, his sharp eyes scanning their surroundings like a predator on edge.
Creed followed Dagga's gaze and froze. The place they'd landed in was nothing like the desert.
They were surrounded by massive trees, their black trunks twisted and warped in unnatural shapes.
Their branches stretched overhead, blocking out the sky and casting eerie shadows on the ground. A thick, pale mist clung to the air, swirling like ghostly tendrils around their feet.
The air smelled of decay, and the faint whispers of something unseen brushed against his ears.
Yet, the forest was silent—no wind, no animals, just an oppressive, unnatural stillness.
"Where... where are we?" Creed asked, his voice low but still trembling slightly. He pushed himself to his feet, his body still shaking from the run and the strange teleportation.
Dagga shot him a sharp glare and raised a claw to his lips. "Shhh! Keep your voice down." His words came as a harsh whisper.
Creed swallowed hard, his heart pounding again. He lowered his voice to a whisper. "Is this where we were supposed to go?"
Dagga didn't answer right away. His eyes darted around the forest, his sharp ears twitching.
For the first time since Creed had met him, Dagga looked genuinely afraid.
"No," Dagga finally said, his voice a barely audible growl. "Our luck's bad. Real bad. The Tree of Fate sent us directly into the Nihility Forest."
Creed's stomach dropped. The Nihility Forest. The name sent a chill down his spine.
He'd read of it before in his father's journal. It was a cursed place, filled with creatures that weren't supposed to exist. It was said that even the strongest demons avoided it.
"This is bad," Dagga muttered, more to himself than to Creed. His claws flexed nervously, and his tail flicked behind him. "We might not leave this place alive."
