Chapter 6: Into the Unknown
The morning sun streamed through the cracks in the ruined walls, casting long beams of light across the stone floor. Alex stood near the edge of the barricades, his crossbow slung over his shoulder and his newly repaired turret humming softly behind him. The quiet of the ruins was deceptive; he could feel the tension in the air, the weight of an unseen threat pressing down on him.
The System's glowing interface floated beside him, displaying his updated objectives in its usual emotionless manner.
---
"Objective: Investigate the origin of Corrupted entities. Recommended: Secure additional Mana Cores and upgrade equipment. Location: Duskwood Ruins."
---
Alex frowned, tapping the marker on the map that had appeared in the corner of the interface. It highlighted a new location several kilometers away, deep within the forest. The Duskwood Ruins were marked in faint red, with a note that read: "High threat level. Proceed with caution."
"High threat level," Alex muttered. "Great. Just what I needed."
He scanned the map again, noting the terrain between his current position and the ruins. The path would take him through dense forest, a river crossing, and a rocky outcrop before finally reaching the site. If the creatures he'd encountered so far were any indication, it wouldn't be an easy trip.
Alex adjusted the straps on his makeshift bag, making sure the Mana Core fragments and Scout armor pieces he'd salvaged were secure. He grabbed a few extra bolts for his crossbow and double-checked the knife strapped to his belt.
"All right," he said, taking a deep breath. "Let's see what's out there."
---
The forest was alive with sound as Alex stepped beyond the safety of his barricades. Birds chirped in the canopy above, their calls echoing through the trees. The underbrush rustled with the movement of small animals, and the faint hum of insects filled the air.
It was almost peaceful—almost.
Alex's grip on his crossbow tightened as he scanned his surroundings. The forest may have looked serene in the daylight, but he knew better. The Corrupted could be anywhere, hiding in the shadows, waiting for the right moment to strike.
He followed the System's map, keeping to the path it highlighted. The ground was uneven, covered in roots and patches of moss that made every step feel uncertain. The sunlight filtered through the dense canopy in patches, creating pockets of light and shadow that played tricks on his eyes.
After about an hour of walking, Alex reached the river. It wasn't particularly wide, but the current was strong, the water rushing over jagged rocks. The map indicated a crossing point a few meters downstream, where a fallen tree formed a natural bridge.
Alex approached cautiously, testing the tree's stability with his foot. It groaned slightly under his weight but held firm. He took a deep breath and started across, his arms outstretched for balance.
The halfway point was where things went wrong.
A low growl reached his ears, making him freeze mid-step. He turned his head slowly, his stomach sinking as he spotted the source of the sound.
A wolf.
No, not just a wolf—three wolves, their glowing red eyes fixed on him from the opposite bank.
"Of course," Alex muttered, gripping his crossbow.
The first wolf stepped onto the log, its claws digging into the wood as it advanced toward him. Alex raised his crossbow, firing a bolt that struck the creature in the shoulder. The wolf yelped, stumbling back, but the other two pressed forward, their growls growing louder.
Alex fired again, the bolt striking one of the wolves in the chest. It collapsed with a strangled howl, but the remaining wolf leapt onto the log, its eyes blazing with fury.
The tree bridge wobbled dangerously as Alex backed away, his heart pounding. He reached the far end of the log and jumped onto the riverbank, landing hard on his knees. The wolf followed, its claws tearing into the earth as it charged.
Alex rolled to the side, narrowly avoiding its jaws, and grabbed his knife. The wolf lunged again, and Alex drove the blade into its side, twisting it with all his strength. The creature let out a pained howl, its glowing eyes dimming as it collapsed.
---
"Threat neutralized. Reward: 30 Resource Points."
---
Alex pulled the knife free, panting as he stared at the lifeless creature. His arms and legs trembled, the adrenaline crash hitting him like a wave.
"I hate this place," he muttered, wiping the blade on his tunic.
The System chimed softly, displaying a new message.
---
"Recommendation: Continue toward Duskwood Ruins. Resources in area: Moderate."
---
Alex groaned but forced himself to his feet. The path ahead beckoned, the dense forest stretching endlessly before him.
He adjusted his bag, reloaded his crossbow, and started walking.
---
The forest thickened as Alex pressed onward, the trees growing closer together until their twisted branches formed a canopy so dense that sunlight barely filtered through. The once-lively sounds of the forest began to fade, replaced by an eerie quiet that set Alex's nerves on edge.
The System's map pulsed faintly in his peripheral vision, guiding him along the overgrown path. The Duskwood Ruins were still a few kilometers away, but the terrain had become more treacherous. Every step was a calculated effort to avoid tripping on hidden roots or slipping on damp moss.
Alex crouched low as he approached a rocky outcrop. The System had marked this spot as a potential encounter zone, and he wasn't about to let his guard down. He scanned the area, his crossbow raised, his finger hovering over the trigger.
At first, he saw nothing. The rocks jutted out of the ground at odd angles, their surfaces streaked with dark stains that Alex didn't want to think too hard about. The shadows between them were deep and impenetrable, and the air felt heavier here, like the forest itself was holding its breath.
Then he heard it.
A faint chittering sound, high-pitched and rapid, like the clicking of insect mandibles. It was coming from the shadows, growing louder with each passing second.
"Great," Alex muttered, gripping his crossbow tighter. "What fresh hell is this?"
The first creature emerged from the darkness, skittering over the rocks with unnatural speed. It was about the size of a large dog, its body covered in a hard, chitinous shell that gleamed faintly in the dim light. Its multiple legs moved in a blur, and its mandibles clicked together as it fixed its glowing red eyes on Alex.
---
"Threat Identified: Corrupted Skitterer."
"Classification: Swarm. Difficulty: Medium. Weakness: Vulnerable underbelly."
---
As if on cue, three more Skitterers scurried into view, their movements jerky and erratic. Alex felt a bead of sweat slide down his temple as the creatures surrounded him, their mandibles opening and closing in an unsettling rhythm.
"Vulnerable underbelly," Alex muttered. "Of course it's the hardest part to hit."
The first Skitterer lunged, its legs a blur as it closed the distance. Alex fired his crossbow, the bolt striking its shell with a sharp thunk but failing to penetrate. The creature hissed, recoiling slightly before circling around for another attack.
Alex dodged to the side as a second Skitterer charged, its mandibles snapping inches from his leg. He swung his knife at the creature's underside, the blade slicing through the soft flesh. The Skitterer let out a shrill screech, its legs spasming as it collapsed.
---
"Threat neutralized. Reward: 10 Resource Points."
---
The remaining three Skitterers moved in unison, their glowing eyes fixed on Alex. He backed up against the outcrop, his breath coming in short gasps as he tried to think.
The System chimed again.
---
"Recommendation: Use terrain to gain advantage. Skitterers are less agile on uneven surfaces."
---
Alex's eyes darted to a nearby cluster of jagged rocks. The uneven ground might slow the creatures down—just enough for him to take them out.
He bolted toward the rocks, his boots slipping slightly on the moss-covered surface. The Skitterers hissed in unison, scuttling after him.
Alex climbed onto the largest rock, his crossbow at the ready. The first Skitterer lunged, its legs scrabbling for purchase on the uneven ground. Alex fired, the bolt striking its underbelly. The creature screeched, its body convulsing before falling still.
The remaining two hesitated, their glowing eyes darting between Alex and the fallen Skitterer. Alex took the opportunity to reload, his hands moving quickly despite the tremor in his fingers.
One of the Skitterers scuttled onto the rock, its mandibles snapping. Alex kicked it hard, sending it tumbling back onto the ground. He fired another bolt, the projectile piercing its vulnerable underside.
---
"Threat neutralized. Reward: 10 Resource Points."
---
The final Skitterer let out a shrill hiss, its legs twitching as it retreated into the shadows. Alex didn't lower his weapon until he was sure it was gone.
He collapsed onto the rock, his chest heaving as he wiped sweat from his brow. His arms and legs ached, and his mind buzzed with exhaustion.
---
"Threat neutralized. Path to Duskwood Ruins clear."
---
"Clear?" Alex said, his voice shaky. "That's what you call clear?"
The System, predictably, didn't respond.
---
The last leg of the journey was uneventful, though Alex remained on high alert. By the time he reached the edge of the Duskwood Ruins, the sun was dipping below the horizon, casting the forest in hues of orange and gold.
The ruins were massive, far larger than Alex had expected. Crumbling towers rose above the treetops, their stone walls covered in moss and ivy. The central structure—a sprawling, cathedral-like building—was mostly intact, its arched windows glowing faintly in the twilight.
The System chimed softly, displaying a new objective.
---
"Objective: Explore Duskwood Ruins. Potential Resources: Mana Core, Enchanted Materials, Unknown Artifacts."
---
Alex stared at the ruins, a mix of awe and dread twisting in his gut. The place felt ancient, almost sacred, but the faint glow from the windows sent a chill down his spine.
He tightened his grip on his crossbow and stepped forward, the shadows of the Duskwood Ruins swallowing him whole.
