Chapter 20: A NEW DAY
I walked back to my apartment, the events in the shower are still fresh in my mind. Peggy and I had spent the night together, which I don't remember, but the shower one... Yeah, that's a good one. And although it was not a perfect reconciliation, it felt good to have her by my side again, if only for a little while. As I entered my apartment, I took off my shoes and headed straight to the kitchen for a quick breakfast.
I prepared a simple meal, grabbing a bowl of cereal and pouring some milk over it. While I ate, my mind wandered about the events of before I got drunk. The warehouse incident at the docks.
I switched on the TV. If things went right, the police should have caught them or whatever was left of them.
I switched to the local news channel, hoping to catch any updates on the warehouse incident at the docks. The news anchor's voice filled the room as I sat down, spoon in hand, eating my cereal.
"In a shocking turn of events, a warehouse at the northern docks collapsed last night, trapping several individuals inside. The cause of the collapse is still under investigation, but authorities suspect structural weaknesses in the old building. So far, three bodies have been recovered from the wreckage, and search and rescue teams are working tirelessly to locate any survivors."
I watched the images on the screen, showing the remains of the collapsed warehouse and the efforts of the emergency response teams. It was a grim sight, and a sense of unease washed over me. The consequences of my actions were unfolding before my eyes. But for some reason, I felt terribly calm knowing that no innocent got caught in that and my action saved many soon-to-be victims of those bastards.
"As investigations continue, authorities are urging anyone with information regarding the incident to come forward. They are particularly interested in locating a witness who made an anonymous call to the police, reporting the presence of the bodies in a car trunk near the scene. The witness is described as a male, and is believed to have crucial information regarding the case. But the bright side is all of the victims recovered so far have criminal records and are wanted in outer states."
I finished my breakfast, feeling a mixture of relief and anxiety. It was clear that I needed to proceed with caution. The police were on the lookout for the witness, and I had to be careful not to be discovered. My anonymous call had drawn attention to myself, and I couldn't afford to be caught in the crosshairs of law enforcement.
I paced around my apartment, contemplating my next move. I knew I couldn't stay idle. There were still others out there who deserved to face the consequences of their actions. The corruption, the exploitation, and the harm they caused needed to be exposed and killed.
Humm. All I wanted was a peaceful life in the freaking Marvel world, which I know was nothing but a dream, but five freaking years... I lived peacefully for five freaking years. But it seems, whatever or whoever reincarnated me in this world won't let me live in peace. So, be it...
I don't lack money or space... Maybe, a vigilante?
The idea of becoming a vigilante sparked in my mind. I had witnessed firsthand the flaws in the system, the loopholes that allowed criminals to thrive. If the authorities couldn't or wouldn't take action, then maybe it was up to me to bring justice to those who deserved it. The heroes can take on their cosmic-level threats, meanwhile, I will keep the streets clear from the shadows.
But I knew I couldn't do it alone. I needed information, resources, and allies to effectively take on the criminal underworld.
While pondering about my next step, another piece of news caught my attention.
"Ah, that freaking Symboite Lizard again..." I mumbled.
I listened intently to the news report about the Lizard wreaking havoc at a medicine factory. It seemed to be causing chaos wherever it went, and its unique abilities made it a formidable opponent. The news anchor mentioned that the authorities were struggling to contain the creature and the heroes are struggling to find its location due to the vast sewer system.
Well, I can't do anything with my underdeveloped power, and if I don't step in, I am sure Gwen will go after that freak and she might get hurt, which I can not... must not let that happen.
Let's clear up today's job as fast as possible and have to take care of Sam's and Julia's situation, then I will think of a way to train. Time to go...
After cleaning up, I quickly gathered my things and prepared to leave my apartment. I needed to take care of Sam's and Julia's situation first before I could focus on training and becoming a vigilante. But I couldn't let the Lizard creature wreak havoc unchecked. Gwen's safety was also a concern, and I didn't want her to face that danger alone.
---
On my way, I dialed Gwen's number. She answered after a few rings.
"Hey, Gwen, it's me," I said.
"Boss? So, did you get laid last night?" Gwen asked and I can imagine a sly smirk on her face.
Damn! This is kinda bad and weirdly awkward. Did I call her last night in my drunken state? Fuck! I should have checked my calls.
"Ahem! First, I am sorry if I babbled out something unnecessary. And secondly, I was drunk and I don't remember a thing," I apologized honestly.
"Hahaha... I know. Just pulling your leg. Anyway, Anna and I will pull your leg later. Right now, I got some good news. We found a suitable place for them to live. It's managed by the X-Force. It turns out that our Sam here has certain abilities and so is his sister. Hurry and get here... I have already sent you the address," Gwen replied.
"Thanks, Gwen. That's great news. I'll be there as soon as I can," I said, relief washing over me. Knowing that Sam and Julia would have a safe place to stay gave me some peace of mind, "Oh, by the way, you saw the news about that Lizard thing going on a rampage?"
"Yes, I saw the news. It seems like a dangerous situation," she replied.
"I mean, the size of that thing and that black goo skin... It's like two different entities fused together. And, it's just my opinion, but that footage from today's news... Did you notice something when the loud sound of the siren and the alarm started? That black thing started to react and that creature disappeared. Maybe the sound is its weakness, who knows? I am sure the heroes will figure out a way..." I said.
I dropped in a hint for her. If she encounters that freak, she should be able to use this info to her advantage.
After a slight pause...
"....Interesting," Gwen replied, catching on to the hint. "I'll keep that in mind. Hopefully, the heroes can find a way to contain that creature soon."
"Yeah, hopefully. Well, I will be there soon. See ya..."
"See you soon, Boss..."
---
As I arrived at the location, I looked around and saw a well-maintained building. It had a sign indicating it was managed by the X-Force. I felt relieved knowing that Sam and Julia would have a safe place to stay, surrounded by others with special abilities who could understand and help them.
I entered the building and made my way to the designated apartment. As I approached the door, it swung open, and a jumpy girl with short curly hair, big pink goggles on top of head, a yellow jacket, and small shorts came running and crashed into me.
"Ooowe!" She got up and stood up on top of my stomach, "That's a nice and soft landing..."
"Uumm... Excuse me. Would you mind...?" I said.
The girl looked at me with wide eyes, realizing her mistake, and quickly hopped off my stomach, apologizing profusely.
"Oh my gosh! I'm so sorry! I didn't mean to jump on you like that. Are you okay?" she exclaimed, helping me up and brushing off any dust from my clothes.
"JUBILEE!!! This is the fourth time. You better stop running and save yourself a world of stabbing..." A threatening voice came from the other side of the gate.
"Oh, crap! I am sorry and bye, bye..." she took off like a wind.
