Chapter 2: 1: First Mission
In 2041, Madam Di-Xian receives a call from one of her clients at the Shi-Zhang Corporation Centre Office. On the other end of the line is a woman who urgently wants to meet with her. The woman sounds desperate. She suggests meeting at 11:00 PM at Wenjing Cafeteria in Young Zoung's district. However, she prefers to speak privately. Madam Di-Xian agrees and tells her to come to Fasho Restaurant in the Sian District, even giving her the address. At 11:00 PM, the client arrives at the Fasho Restaurant, inside the luxury hotel there are few customers. The client is desperate to meet her all of the time and a waiter guides her to the VIP Room, where Madam Di-Xian greets her and says, "Please, sit."
"So, what is it?" asks Madam Di-Xian calmly.
The client's eyes are filled with dread and determination. "It's about my daughter who passed away a few months ago," she says, her voice trembling.
Di-Xian responds with sympathy, "I heard the news. My condolences. But didn't she take her own life?"
"No! Someone killed her. I want you to avenge her," the woman replies, her eyes cold and deadly.
A few months earlier, the client's name, Fa Mi-Xin, was a single mother living with her daughter, Fa Shao-Li. "I'm going to school, Mom!" Shao-Li would call out each morning. "Be careful!" Mi-Xin would reply, having raised her daughter single-handedly since losing her husband when Shao-Li was three years old.
Mi-Xin worked two jobs—one at a local restaurant and the other as a waitress at a luxury hotel. Shao-Li worked hard to make her mother proud. "Mom! Look, I got 100 in math's!" Shao-Li would proudly say. "Well done, my child!" Mi-Xin would reply with joy.
But one day, Mi-Xin noticed that her daughter had started acting strangely, and her grades began to slip. When she tried to comfort Shao-Li, the girl would only say, "It's nothing," which made, Mi-Xin even more worried.
However, the nightmare began one fateful morning. "Shao-Li! Shao-Li! Wake up!" Mi-Xin screamed, shaking her unresponsive daughter. Shao-Li had taken a lethal dose of medication. She was rushed to the hospital, but it was too late. "I'm sorry, we couldn't save her," the doctor said, guilt heavy in his voice.
"No!" Mi-Xin cried out in anguish. The doctor further revealed that they found bruises on Shao-Li's body, suggesting she had been assaulted. "Who did this to my daughter?!" Mi-Xin demanded, grabbing the doctor's collar in rage.
"Calm down, ma'am," the doctor urged, shocked by her desperation. Mi-Xin, devastated by the loss of her husband and now her daughter, was consumed with rage. "Who did this to her?" she kept asking herself. She filed a complaint to the SSCBF Headquarters.
A few days later, the Chief Minister of SSCBF, Wen-Luo, informed her that Shao-Li had been raped by Yang Xiao Lang. Mi-Xin was stunned by the news. Yang Xiao Lang was the son of Lao Xiao Lang, the powerful President of Xiao Lang Civil institute (XLCI).
She begged them to arrest him, but the chief replied, "I'm sorry, ma'am, but we can't—he's the President's son."
"What?!" Mi-Xin was shocked by his words. However, the chief mentioned that there was someone who knew more about what happened to her daughter. "My lieutenant will lead you to him," he added.
"Thank you," Mi-Xin replied, her voice filled with grief.
Later, the lieutenant took her to an alley where they met a man in a black suit, with white hair, smoking a cigarette. "This is the guy," the lieutenant said flatly. The man asked her, "Ma'am, are you Shao-Li's mother?" as he took the cigarette from his mouth.
"Yes," Mi-Xin replied quickly.
"Are you ready?" he asked.
She nodded.
He then explained the horrific details. One day, as Shao-Li returned home from school on her bicycle, she encountered Yang Xiao Lang and his gang. She ignored them, but Yang Xiao Lang kicked her off her bike. She attempted to flee, but they dragged her into their territory, where they sexually assaulted her. "If you tell anyone, we'll leak the photos and videos," Yang Xiao Lang had threatened with a sadistic laugh.
"They tormented her for three days until she took her own life," the informant concluded.
Mi-Xin collapsed to the ground, crying in anguish. The informant then told her, "If you want to avenge your daughter, I know someone who can help. She's dangerous, and her methods are frightening."
"Yeah, she is," agreed the lieutenant.
In the present, Mi-Xin begs Madam Di-Xian to avenge her daughter. "I want him to suffer. Because of him, Shao-Li is gone! Please, do something!"
Di-Xian holds her hands and says, "Don't worry, ma'am. I'll take your case."
"Thank you," Mi-Xin sobs.
After Mi-Xin leaves, Di-Xian sits at her desk and calls. "Hey, I have a mission for you," she says coldly.
"What is it?" asks the person on the other end of the line.
"I want you to assassinate Yang Xiao Lang," she says, providing more details.
"Understood, Madam," comes the reply.
"Be careful, Agent-90," Di-Xian warns.
His eyes filled with deadly determination, Agent-90 nods and prepares to take action.
In the late-night hours of Obsidian Reach, the city takes on an even more sinister and foreboding atmosphere. Towering skyscrapers made of dark, reflective glass and cold steel loom over the streets like silent sentinels, their jagged silhouettes cutting through the night sky. The few remaining lights cast an eerie, flickering glow, creating long, distorted shadows that dance across the cracked pavements and graffiti-covered walls.
The streets are mostly deserted, save for the occasional patrol of heavily armed SSCBF operatives. Their faces are hidden behind dark visors, they scan the area for any signs of trouble. The sound of their boots echoing off the buildings is a constant reminder of the ever-present surveillance in this dystopian metropolis.
In contrast, the High District, where the city's elite reside, is eerily quiet. The high-rise apartments and luxury penthouses are locked down and protected by state-of-the-art security systems. Here, the wealthy remain secluded, watching the world below through reinforced glass windows, secure in their ivory towers yet aware of the dangers that lurk beyond their walls.
The wind howls through the narrow streets, carrying with it the distant sound of a siren—a reminder that violence is never far away in Obsidian Reach. The occasional burst of gunfire echoes in the distance, followed by silence, as yet another conflict is swiftly and brutally resolved.
Above, the sky is a perpetual shade of dark grey, choked by pollution and the constant glow of industrial fires burning on the outskirts. The moon, if visible, appears as a ghostly, pale orb, casting just enough light to outline the skeletal remains of old, forgotten structures.
Agent-90 moves through the shadows, avoiding the SSCBF patrol guards and surveillance cameras as he approaches Xiao Lang's skyscraper. He positions himself on the right side of the building, unnoticed by the two guards at the front gate. He presses a switch on his watch, releasing a small robotic bug that heads toward the target area.
The bug scans the entire territory. On his watch, Agent-90 sees that there are two more gates and four surveillance cameras monitoring the area.
The time is 1:00 AM. It's the perfect opportunity for Agent-90 to strike. He moves slowly through the shadows, skillfully avoiding the surveillance cameras, and reaches the east side of the building, where he shoots one of the cameras with his silenced gun.
Hearing the faint crack of the camera, one of the guards becomes suspicious and informs his colleague.
"Go check what that sound was," orders Guard 2.
Guard 1 goes to investigate. As he scans his surroundings, Agent-90 emerges from the darkness, strangling the guard with a sharp wire and dragging him into the shadows.
Disguised as a guard, Agent-90 approaches Guard 2 just as all the cameras are hacked. Meanwhile, in his bedroom, Lao Xiao Lang is sleeping when he suddenly hears the loud sound of footsteps and the shouts of his men in the hallway. He gets up from his bed, alarmed. "What's going on?" he mutters to himself. He goes to check the commotion, only to find his guards and men all dead.
Terrified, he rushes to his office to retrieve important documents. But when he arrives, he finds Agent-90 sitting at his desk.
"Welcome, Lao Xiao Lang. I've been waiting for you," Agent-90 says, pointing a gun at him.
"How did you get in?" Lao Xiao Lang asks, trying to stay calm as he moves to his wine table and pours himself a glass of wine.
Agent-90 remains silent. "This is about your son. Where is he?" he finally asks.
Lao Xiao Lang, unnerved by Agent-90's words, replies, "What has he done?"
Agent-90 explains everything in detail. "I don't know what you're talking about," Lao Xiao Lang says as he turns away, only to find Agent-90 pointing a knife near his eyes.
"I don't have much time. Tell me where he is, and I'll spare your life," Agent-90 demands.
"He's at Duo-Chen Warehouse with the Riots," Lao Xiao Lang replies, his voice trembling.
"Good! You're free now," Agent-90 says, withdrawing his knife and exiting the room. As soon as Agent-90 leaves, Lao Xiao Lang rushes to his weapon closet to retrieve a gun, intent on killing him. But as he opens the closet, he discovers a time bomb hidden among the guns. It detonates instantly, killing him in a fiery explosion.
He glance back seeing Lao Xiao Lang to crisp as he fixes his spectacle and left the place.
The scene shifts to a dimly lit, dilapidated Duo-Chen warehouse on the outskirts of the city, where shadows play tricks on the eyes, and every creak of the building echoes ominously. The Riots, a gang notorious for their ruthlessness, have fortified the area, turning the warehouse into a stronghold to protect Yang Xiao Lang, who is being shielded by his father's money and influence.
As Agent-90 enters the warehouse, the silence is deafening. The Riots are on high alert, aware that someone is here and face Agent-90. The tension is palpable. The first clash is sudden—a flurry of movement as two gang members rush at Agent-90 from the shadows. His response is swift and precise. With almost mechanical efficiency, he sidesteps one attacker while delivering a crushing blow to the other's throat, dropping him instantly. The second man barely has time to react before Agent-90 disarms him, turning his own weapon against him with lethal precision.
The gang members come at him in waves, attempting to overwhelm him with sheer numbers. But Agent-90 is a master of his craft. His movements are fluid, almost graceful, as he dispatches each opponent with a blend of martial arts and brutal efficiency. He uses the environment to his advantage—slamming one man's head into a steel beam, using a broken wooden plank to block a knife strike before countering with a devastating elbow to the attacker's face.
At one point, Agent-90 finds himself surrounded by five members of the Riots. They believe they have him cornered, but he shows no sign of fear. In a blur of motion, he takes down the first two with a combination of quick strikes, then disarms the third with a wrist twist that results in a sickening snap. The fourth tries to catch him off guard with a chain, but Agent-90 swiftly wraps the chain around the man's neck, using him as a human shield against the fifth assailant's gunfire.
The final confrontation comes as the leader of the Riots, a hulking brute covered in tattoos, steps forward. Armed with a machete, he exudes menace. But even he is no match for Agent-90. The fight is intense, with the leader swinging the machete wildly, trying to land a blow. Agent-90 dodges with precision, his movements calculated and controlled. He waits for the perfect moment, then strikes with a series of rapid punches that disarm the leader and leave him staggering.
With the Riots defeated, Agent-90 finally faces Yang Xiao Lang, who stands in the centre of the warehouse, the faint glow of a single overhead light illuminating his figure. Yang Xiao Lang smirks, confident in his abilities, but there's a hint of fear in his eyes as Agent-90 approaches, unfazed, his expression cold and emotionless.
The fight has taken its toll on the surroundings—broken glass, splintered wood, and the unconscious bodies of the Riots are strewn across the floor. Agent-90, remains untouched, his black attire barely rumpled, as he closes in on his final target as Yang Xiao Lang beg for mercy, but Agent-90 don't show any emotion shoot at him 10 times until he takes his final breath.
"Ma'am, all done," he says, speaking into the phone.
"Well done, 90! For your first mission," Madam Di-Xian replies.
