Chapter 6: Into The New World (Part 2)
Auri almost tripped when he read what kind of system he just received. "Are you serious? Please tell me this is just a joke! How am I supposed to protect myself with this kind of system?!"
The ground continued to shift beneath his feet. Fissures on the floor followed him like venomous vines wanting to coil around his ankles, ready to drag him beneath the ground should they catch him. But the system showed no sign of helping, leaving it to him to figure out how to survive a crumbling temple.
"Damn it!"
Auri rounded a corner and saw a clearing beyond another archway. He pumped his legs faster, nearly tripping over multiple times as he avoided slabs of stone falling from the crumbling ceiling. If it wasn't for the little moonlight coming from outside the large windows, he would have been flatten like a pancake on the ground.
With a final push to his legs, Auri leaped through the archway and stumbled onto the ground just as the last of the temple's walls crashed with a resounding force. He looked behind, his breathing ragged, choking on the thick scent of ancient stone.
Was the temple supposed to collapse right after he arrived in this world? Or was it his arrival that caused its collapse?
Auri dropped himself to the uneven ground and lay flat on his back. Dirt and scattered loose stones pressed against his skin, but he couldn't bring himself to care at the moment. He turned his gaze to the night sky, tracing the twinkling constellations that he couldn't recognize. But what truly caught his breath was the sight he wasn't ready for.
Three moons. There were three moons in the sky.
It shouldn't have come as a surprise, given that there were planets that had more than one satellite even back on Earth. To experience it firsthand, however, solidified the feeling that he was now, indeed, truly, in a world that wasn't his own.
He had dreamed of this. He had imagined himself being summoned to a fantasy world filled with magical beasts and obtaining otherworldly powers like the heroes in the web novels and manhwas he had read. This dream had always been the inspiration for the games he created because it was the closest he could have to experience a world so different from his own.
An escape to reality.
But now that he was here, in some fantasy world that he knew nothing about, he was at a loss for what to do.
Seriously though, what was he supposed to do with a system for book restoration? Was there a grand library overflowing with broken books that now had threatened to push the world to the brink of extinction? No matter how much he tried to wrap his mind around it, he couldn't find the logic behind this system.
Well, he would know nothing if he wouldn't do anything.
"Is there any beginner's manual for this?" Auri asked out loud. "You don't expect me to just run around this world without a clue, do you? I might die before I could even do anything."
The parchment-like screen appeared in front of him again, its ink spreading across the empty canvas.
[The records of knowledge respond to your request... Inscribing the Beginner's Manual of Book Restoration System. Do you wish to receive it now?]
Auri blinked in surprise. "Y-Yes?"
A mechanical sound whirred in the air like a steady hum of a printer zipping back and forth as it pressed inked texts onto a piece of paper. After it stopped, something popped up in the air and landed on Auri's face.
"What the—?" Auri grabbed the object and stared at it. "Seriously?"
It was a small booklet with its title written in bold text: BEGINNER'S MANUAL: A GUIDE TO UNDERSTANDING THE BOOK RESTORATION SYSTEM.
Auri was at a loss for words.
Did the system just print a booklet out of thin air?
"This is crazy," Auri said, trying not to laugh at the absurdity of it. "You could have just shown it to me on a floating screen—err, parchment. Whatever."
Auri pushed himself up and flipped through the booklet. With just the light coming from the moon above, it was a bit challenging to read the smaller texts, but he could manage as he still had perfect vision even after spending an unhealthy amount of time in front of his computer.
The first page read as follows:
FOREWORD
Greetings, Knowledge Seeker.
Within these pages lies the essential information regarding the system that will guide you to your path as a restorer of knowledge. It outlines the core mechanics of your abilities, your access to your repository, material usage, and practical applications.
Mastery begins with understanding—study this well.
Auri stared at the text before him. He flipped through the pages and scanned through the detailed descriptions with furrowed brows. Once he finished, he closed the booklet with a quiet thump, sat in silence, and let the information sink in.
After a moment, he exhaled sharply and spoke out loud. "Oh, god. This hurts my brain cells."
Auri rubbed his forehead, his head throbbing as if his mind had been stretched due to the vast knowledge that tried to cram inside his skull. He groaned, pushing himself to stand and look for a place where he could take in the much-needed air to clear his mind.
A trail leading to a cliff revealed itself as he walked further away from the temple ruins. Upon reaching the cliff side, the world opened up to him as the morning sun started to peek through the formless clouds and painted hues of gold and crimson across the land. A vast desert stretched across the horizon, its endless sea of red sand dancing in the wind, curling around the traces of forgotten civilizations. To his right was a dense forest, thick of untamed secrets, waiting to be explored.
Auri sucked in a deep breath and shivered in the cool wind that brushed against his exposed body. The manual said nothing about how to return home, so for now, this world will be his new home.
