Chapter 48: A KNOCK IN THE NIGHT
She saw a small golden light hovering around her. She didn't know what it symbolised, but it felt like a small hope for her.
She desperately tried to grab the small hovering glow, but she could feel her feet sinking below the liquid. Tears started to form in her eyes, at her pitiful state.
Furthermore, she didn't know whether the light would actually save her, but nonetheless, she kept on reaching for it.
The light hovered lower, as if it also wanted to save her, Florah stretched her dainty hand more, trying to reach out to the light.
To her luck, she was able to touch the light by her fingertips. The moment her fingers grazed the tiny glowing orb, it expanded and shone brighter, almost blinding her.
Gavriel heard and felt the slight changes and reactions of Florah as her dream continued.
From the rising heartbeat to her silent mumbles, Gavriel unconsciously held her tighter against him.
As if her dream had stopped, Florah's breathing slowly got back to normal, and she snuggled more into his embrace.
Gavriel internally rolled his eyes and noted in his head to find a governor to teach his maid manners and basic etiquette.
The moment the orb of light expanded, Florah shut her eyes tightly to keep away its blinding light.
The light felt like a protective warm embrace carrying her away into a peaceful place.
In the silent, peaceful place, she heard happy girly giggles. She felt the urge to open her eyes, but when she tried to do so, it was like something was weighing down her eyelids.
They felt very heavy for her to lift, and eventually, after several tries, she gave up the idea of opening her eyes.
The giggles had also quieted down some time back. The sound felt strangely familiar to her, hence the urge to see whoever it was.
She felt herself drifting peacefully like a cloud, her body and mind both exhausted.
She let her body succumb to rest on the soft cloud underneath her.
Gavriel heard Florah's heart stabilise to a normal rate and unknowingly also succumbed to sleep beside his mysterious maid.
Unbeknownst to the sleepy duo, the book opened itself to the back, and strange letters encompassed in a pentagon appeared on the creamish paper.
Jeremiah lay in the guestroom that was assigned to him, thinking about his friend in worry.
He had missed his opportunity to confirm that she was fine when the king appeared in the dining hall moments after he had left the room.
He had hurried back to the hall the moment he heard one of the maids gossiping to the other about how the king had marched into the hall with a redhead as a servant.
But he was too late, and the man had already gone to his Chambers where he wasn't allowed to step foot.
He had tried to wait nearby, hoping that maybe Florah would come down, but that was just his wishful thinking because even after a couple of hours, no one came down the stairs.
He had to leave the place so as not to raise suspicions.
At least he knew that she was alive. He tried to console himself.
'Knock' 'knock' just when Jeremiah was lost deep in his thoughts, two knocks on his door interrupted him.
He had an inkling of who was at the door, and he didn't want to be entangled with that person at the moment or hopefully ever again.
He contemplated whether to answer the door or just ignore it and decided the former for courtesy.
Trotting to the door, with only his loose pyjama pants covering his lower half, he reached for the handle and opened it.
Just who he thought stood in front of him, dressed modestly in her night dress covered by a long silky robe.
The vampiress averted her eyes to the floor the moment she glimpsed at his bare chest and abs.
The sight before her knocked the words she prepared to say to the back of her throat.
Now, she stood there trying to find her tongue with a heavy blush on her cheeks.
Jeremiah stood there waiting for the woman to state her purpose of interrupting his rest, but she just stood there looking flustered.
"Have a good rest, Milady," he said and closed the door and went back to his bed.
Helpless red eyes stared at the closed feeling hurt, but who could she blame but her pitiful heart for driving her to his room in the middle of the night.
She had tried to let go of the idea, but it nagged her until she found her feet standing at his door.
She let out a helpless sigh and left to go back to her room, knowing that she would just stare blankly into space until sunrise.
