Chapter 37: -34- Kneel before me!
"Castel's Demon! Die!"
With a ferocious face, the servant, brandishing a dagger flashing with cold light, lunged at Charlotte's chest.
The scene unfolded so suddenly that everyone was stunned.
"Master, be careful!"
Casimodo was the quickest to react. His expression changed drastically as he fearlessly threw himself forward.
However, he was too far from Charlotte.
The servant's eyes were bloodshot, veins on his forehead bulging, and his pupils filled with hatred.
He leaped forward, reaching Charlotte in an instant.
He could see the barely perceptible pores beneath the girl's delicate skin, the soft, fair hairs on her tender white cheeks.
He could smell the faint scent of lavender emanating from the girl, feel the warm breath that was so close he could almost touch it.
He almost saw his dagger pierce the girl's chest.
He imagined the blood splattering, the girl falling in terror and despair.
He laughed.
He laughed unrestrainedly.
In that hideous smile was the pleasure of revenge and the madness of lost sanity.
But the next second, his smile froze.
His dagger was less than three centimeters from Charlotte's chest.
However, those three centimeters had become a chasm.
A slender, delicate arm gently rose, stopping the dagger in his hand.
That arm was so frail, so slim, it looked as if it could be easily snapped by accident.
But such a fragile arm, such a smooth and tiny hand, held the dagger fixed in place.
That was Charlotte's hand.
She had only extended two fingers.
The servant's eyes widened instantly.
It was just two fingers pinching the weapon, but it felt to him as if he had plunged into an unbreakable rock, immovable.
Neither able to thrust in nor pull out.
His gaze shifted from the girl's steadily rising and falling chest, slowly lifting to see a calm beautiful face and a pair of deep, unfathomable blue eyes.
No panic, no fear, no astonishment.
There was only a calmness and maturity that didn't match her childish and endearing appearance.
"My dear Casimodo, it seems your search was not quite thorough," Charlotte said with a light laugh. Her smile, blooming beautifully in that moment, gave no indication that she had ever been concerned about the assassin.
With a flick of her wrist, the servant felt an overwhelming force emerging from her palm.
The tightly gripped dagger flew out of his grasp as if shot from a bow, piercing the distant hall's wooden door and quivering before sticking fast.
Thrown to the ground by the force of the blow, the servant stumbled, his mind echoing with a terrified voice roaring incessantly:
Transcendent!
She is a Transcendent!
She is a noble who has awakened her bloodline powers!
His expression shifted rapidly—surprise, fear, anger... and finally desperation.
He lifted his head, his ferocious gaze fixed on the standing girl, and with a hoarse roar, he tried to charge at her again.
Seeing the servant rush toward her, Charlotte's beautiful blue eyes shimmered with light, as she released her Majesty Skill set to an intimidating stance.
Her look turned icy and indifferent in an instant, and a crisp yet authoritative command broke free:
"Kneel before me!"
With a boom, the servant about to attack again felt as if a thunderous explosion had erupted within his soul. The girl before him seemed in an instant to grow impossibly tall, as if she had become a towering monarch and an immortal deity.
The majestic yell echoed endlessly in his mind, like an irresistible force, instantly shattering his newly mustered courage and his heart as fragile as parchment...
An unparalleled fear and awe filled his mind, and the servant's face turned deathly white, as if he had suffered a massive Spirit Shock, dazed and bewildered.
He staggered, his legs collapsing involuntarily, and with a thud, he knelt down, then lost all strength, unable to muster the courage to stand again...
"Thud..."
"Thud..."
Not far off, Casimodo, still mortal, along with the other newcomers who had yet to react properly, also trembled and nearly subconsciously fell to their knees...
Even the Black Cat Nisi on the steps, upon hearing the command that seemed to have transcended conventional Majesty Skill, felt a moment of unease, instinctively crouching down.
Ah, no!
Why am I kneeling as Master Cat?
It quickly realized its mistake and scrabbled to stand, but watching the hall full of kneeling servants and the only standing girl, it felt an indescribable pressure and obediently lay back down, tail tucked...
Charlotte's gaze slowly swept across the room, her eyebrows knitting slightly:
"What are you kneeling for?"
"Stand up!"
The dozen or so newcomers hesitated a moment, then all turned to look at Casimodo.
Casimodo, however, was staring intently at the girl who still appeared childlike but seemed to possess the authority and demeanor of a true Family Head of the Nobles, his gaze burning with intensity.
His expression changed from joy to sadness, to relief, and then to guilt...
However, the old servant quickly regained his composure and shakily stood up.
The remaining servants followed suit, standing up and instinctively keeping their distance from the assassin.
"What are you waiting for? Seize the assassin! If our great master gets hurt, can you afford the consequence?!"
A hoarse and blustering voice came through as Black Cat Nisi leapt up and down, pointing at the assassin who was still trembling under the Majesty Skill, excitedly exclaiming.
There was a certain air of borrowed authority in his demeanor.
A talking cat?!
Some of the novices who had never encountered Transcendent creatures were clearly frightened.
Of course, no one was going to follow a cat's order, and instead, they instinctively looked towards Charlotte and Casimodo.
This gradually made Nisi, who was in an excited state, feel an inexplicable embarrassment, almost making him want to look for a corner to start scratching at the floor.
Charlotte glanced at him, suppressing a smile that almost showed, then ordered Casimodo:
"Take him to the dungeon."
Casimodo respectfully bowed his head and beckoned the remaining novices to come forward, pressing the now completely powerless assassin down.
In Noble Manor, almost every household has a dungeon, and Castel Manor was no exception.
That was the darkest and most terrifying place in a family.
After a flurry of activity, it was already night.
A weary Casimodo entered the study and once again knelt with a 'plop' in front of Charlotte, who was seated behind the desk:
"Master... Casimodo is incompetent, having failed to detect the assassin hidden among the servants..."
"I will dismiss them all right away and choose anew..."
Charlotte put down the parchment that listed the Castel family's assets in Bold City, gently massaged her slightly swollen temples, then knocked on the desk in front of her.
Black Cat, perched on the table, immediately got the hint, hastily grabbed the milk jug filled with milk, tail held high, and deftly refilled the girl's empty goblet.
"Stand up. You're not young anymore, and your knees aren't in good shape; stop kneeling all the time."
She took a gentle sip of milk and spoke kindly, her beautiful face radiating an innocent and flawless smile, a far cry from the queenly aura she had in the hall that afternoon.
Hearing the girl's words of care, the old servant's expression immediately overflowed with gratitude, with tears twinkling at the corners of his eyes.
"As you wish, master."
He respectfully bowed, his voice choked, and then shakily stood up.
"There's no need to dismiss everyone. Just have Nisi do another check later on."
Charlotte said, taking another sip of milk.
It must be said, the milk in this world really tasted wonderful, sweet and rich, fresh and delicious.
Charlotte wasn't sure whether it was her body's innate preference for milk or her own acquired taste since her Crossing, but now she felt lackluster if she went a day without it.
Upon hearing the girl's words, Black Cat's ears nearly shot straight up in an instant.
It cleared its throat, proud head raised, looking completely confident.
Casimodo glanced at Black Cat and respectfully lowered his head:
"I will heed your command."
"Have you found out where he came from?"
Charlotte asked again.
Casimodo hesitated for a moment before sighing:
"We have."
"Who sent him here? Who has deceived him?"
Charlotte raised her voice.
This time, her expression was much more serious and intense.
She was truly curious.
Kidnapping, framing, assassination attempts... who had she offended? Whose interests had she affected?
Although she had been unscathed each time, the constant feeling of flies buzzing around her was truly nauseating, and there was always the chance of harm coming her way one day.
She needed to know who her enemies were, she wanted to know where that hidden malice was coming from!
Casimodo hesitated again, not answering immediately.
Charlotte found that strange.
She looked at the old servant and quickly caught a fleeting hesitation on his face.
"Speak up, there's nothing you can't say."
Charlotte encouraged.
Casimodo let out a sigh before responding:
"Master, he... he volunteered."
"Volunteered?"
Charlotte was taken aback.
She furrowed her brow:
"What exactly happened?"
Seeing the girl's perplexed expression, Casimodo sighed:
"Master, do you... remember the Flame Demon Disaster from ten years ago?"
