Chapter 25: -22- Dieting should be done in moderation too!
"The performance wasn't bad."
In the slowly moving carriage, Charlotte sat with her legs crossed, one hand resting on the window rail and the other holding a crystal goblet filled with milk, looking quite relaxed and comfortable.
In the opposite corner of the carriage,
Black Cat Nisi huddled into a ball, its amber vertical pupils fixed on the milky white stains near the girl's mouth, swallowing saliva with difficulty.
Noticing its brazen gaze, Charlotte's eyes turned cold as she picked up a silk handkerchief and gently wiped her mouth.
Nisi gave up its stare with regret, saying sarcastically,
"I can't compare to Your Majesty. You are the true genius of performance; your acting skills could take you straight to the theatre to play the leading lady!"
"Charlotte."
Charlotte took a sip of the sweet milk and said,
"In the future, when in front of others, you shall refer to me as Charlotte."
"And in private, you shall call me master."
Nisi's cat's eyes widened and it instantly snapped,
"Bah! You evil alien god! Don't expect me to submit to you!"
"Hmm?"
Charlotte glanced briefly at it.
The Holy Emblem on her forehead flashed, Nisi's expression changed, and finally, through gritted teeth, it said,
"Master!"
That tone of resentment—it was as if it wanted to eat her flesh and drink her blood!
"Hmm."
Charlotte chuckled contentedly, with a hint of a smile on her lips.
Her mood was quite good now.
Having finally left the Church Hospital, having avoided the crisis, thwarted the plot to abduct her, and incidentally gained a tool cat that seemed quite capable, everything was looking up.
And now, seeing this previously presumptuous Black Cat so angered yet forced to submit to her tyranny was particularly pleasing to Charlotte.
This feeling of joy built upon someone else's pain was quite delightful.
She felt as if some strange attribute within her was awakening.
"Tell me, how did you just summon that monster?"
Charlotte propped her head by the window, looking at Black Cat Nisi with interest.
Nisi scowled, scoffing in mock,
"Does toying with me please you so much? As an Evil God, surely you are well acquainted with this type of targeted Blood Summon? There's no shortage of lost Blood Demons in the Dark Domain!"
"Summoning Technique? From the looks of it... you're not just a Clergy but also a Mage?"
Charlotte raised an eyebrow.
Nisi still scowled, its irritated expression as if to say: Keep pretending, damn you!
"Actually... you're mistaken, I'm not an Evil God."
Charlotte pondered for a moment and said.
Now that they were master and servant, she felt it necessary to clear up some things candidly beforehand to avoid misunderstandings and future trouble:
"Of course, I'm not the original Charlotte either; you can consider me a traveler who arrived in this world by accident."
Nisi remained silent, just shrinking in the corner and looking at her with a scoffing laugh.
Its face was full of disbelief, its hoarse voice as sarcastic as ever:
"Ah yes, yes, yes! Whatever you say! Whatever you say it is, so it shall be!"
Charlotte: ...
Suddenly, she had the urge to pick him up by the scruff of his neck and throw him out of the carriage window.
After taking a deep breath, Charlotte reminded herself in her heart not to stoop to arguing with a fat cat.
Then, shaking her head, she said,
"Really, you didn't have to summon a Blood Demon."
"All you needed was an excuse to say you banished it."
Nisi paused slightly.
Its eyes widened as its expression seemed to say:
Holy shit! Why didn't I think of that?!
Charlotte secretly shook her head, feeling that this fellow's brain might not be as sharp as she thought.
She glanced at the dress she was wearing and asked her final question:
"One last thing..."
"Why do you have the clothes I wore in the Church Hospital?"
Silence...
The anger on the Black Cat's face dissipated in an instant.
In its place was a flickering gaze and averted eyes.
It turned its head away unnaturally, whistling and looking out the window with a guilty conscience:
"Cough, cough, the moonlight tonight is just so beautiful!"
Charlotte: ...
Her expression gradually turned cold, and her gaze deepened.
That look of disgust, as if seeing trash, made Black Cat's heart race with fear.
Suddenly, she smiled brightly.
Her voice was sweet, but without a trace of warmth:
"Roll out yourself and run after the carriage."
Nisi: ...
...
"Eh? Lord Nisi, why did you get out of the carriage?"
Outside the carriage, the Demon Hunting Knight standing guard was quite surprised to see the Black Cat suddenly roll out and start huffing and puffing to run alongside the carriage.
"What are you looking at? Can't Master Cat lose some weight running after the carriage?!"
Nisi cursed a few times with a sagging, chubby face while its four short legs kept busy.
Inside the carriage, Charlotte laughed softly, slowly retracting her gaze.
She had realized that this new servant of hers, though powerful and seemingly of significant background, was also full of pesky habits.
To get him to behave properly, some knocking into shape was clearly required.
Otherwise, this guy would definitely be the type to make trouble if not disciplined every three days.
The grand convoy moved smoothly, with seven or eight Demon Hunting Knights encircling and escorting them.
Charlotte felt like she was some kind of rare protected animal.
It was understandable when she thought about it.
On the day she was discharged from the hospital, she was kidnapped right in front of everyone, which was a blatant slap in the face for the Church. Naturally, they would arrange for Demon Hunting Knights to escort her all the way.
However, Kara, the leader of the guard, had already returned in advance, reportedly for another mission.
The Duke's son Laino had also hurriedly left with her, seemingly due to some urgent matter.
Their premature departure had somewhat relieved the pressure on Charlotte.
Both of them were bona fide Second Tier Silver Moon Transcendents, immensely powerful.
As long as those few Third Tier Blazing Sun elders didn't show up in the city, they could practically do as they pleased in Bold.
Although neither of them knew her true capabilities, standing before such powerful figures, Charlotte still felt somewhat intimidated.
The carriage continued on its way.
It wasn't until they had completely left the dilapidated district that the Demon Hunting Knights guarding them quietly breathed a sigh of relief.
"Master, we have left the abandoned district. Would you like to return to the Manor, or go to the lodging place in the Eastern District?"
Casimodo, the carriage driver, pulled the carriage to a stop and respectfully asked through the soundproof window.
"The lodging place in the Eastern District?"
Charlotte was taken aback.
"The family has a villa in the Eastern District of the city that has been unoccupied for a while. I've already arranged for it to be cleaned. Although it's smaller, it's cleaner and much safer than the Manor,"
Casimodo explained.
Besides, perhaps due to the existence of Transcendent beings, the cities in this world were much larger than those of similar eras on Blue Star.
Taking Bold City, the Capital Mansion of Bold Duchy, for example, the city was divided into the Outer City District and the central city area, each area having a population of at least one hundred and fifty thousand.
The Outer City District was the largest, home to over two hundred thousand people, mostly commoners and the lower class. The slums and the abandoned district where Charlotte was kidnapped were also located here.
The central city area was a bit smaller and had a slightly smaller population but was the heart of Bold City. It was divided into the Eastern and Western Districts.
The Eastern District was centered around the Duke Mansion and the Grand Cathedral, serving as the political, cultural, and religious center of Bold Duchy. Almost all the Duchy's nobles, priests, and wealthy merchants had properties there, with a few major families even owning their own manors.
Of course, these city manors were much smaller than the large manors in the countryside, resembling more a group of villas with large gardens or farmland.
The Western District was the commercial and artisan district, mainly populated by affluent citizens, craftsmen, disenfranchised Nobles, and merchants, and was closest to the commoners' quarters in the Outer City District.
Because land prices were lower than in the Eastern District, the majority of Noble families' manors were also located there.
The original location of the Castel family Manor where Charlotte crossed over was right here.
It wasn't that the Castel family couldn't afford an Eastern District manor.
As a branch of the Bold family line, the first generation family head of the Castel family moved out of the Eastern District right from the founding of the family.
Even when the family later prospered, with its focus shifted to the Count Territory, Castel never purchased new property in the Eastern District of Bold City again.
Charlotte quickly grasped Casimodo's intentions.
The loyal servant was probably worried that the incident at Castel Manor had left her with a psychological shadow.
Moreover, the villa in the Eastern District, being close to the Duke Mansion and Grand Cathedral, indeed boasted better security.
To be honest, Charlotte did have some psychological shadows concerning Castel Manor.
Anybody would feel chills thinking about how there had once been hundreds of living corpses lurking there for who knows how long.
"Has the manor been cleaned?"
Charlotte pondered for a moment before asking.
Casimodo hesitated, then nodded:
"It has been cleaned."
"Then let's return to the manor,"
Charlotte said.
Although in a sense, Castel Manor already qualified as a "haunted house," given her current identity as a member of the Bloodline, Charlotte felt that a place far from the Church suited her better.
She was planning to contemplate the abilities of the Bloodline and the Holy Scripture at home, and was just about to try Blood Summon; the more private the location, the safer.
Additionally, being distant from the eastern city district would reduce interactions with other nobles. Charlotte could imagine with her toes how in-demand she would be in noble circles now.
Not only was she beautiful and adorable, but she also owned a vast estate that she was about to inherit...
A walking gold mine, the kind with a buy-one-get-one-free offer.
Upon receiving Charlotte's command, Casimodo hesitated, but eventually bowed deeply:
"As you wish."
After settling on the destination, things moved quickly.
Castel Manor was not far from the Outer City District, and after about fifteen minutes of carriage travel, they arrived.
"Mistress, we have arrived,"
Casimodo said as he opened the carriage door for Charlotte.
With his careful support, Charlotte gracefully descended from the carriage and looked toward Castel Manor, shrouded in the night.
This place, warm and beautiful in her memories, now appeared completely dark, giving off a rather sinister and desolate feeling.
"Miss Charlotte, we have escorted you home and now it's time for us to take our leave,"
the leading Demon Hunting Knight said.
Charlotte glanced at Casimodo, who immediately understood and quickly took out a money pouch from his bosom, presenting it with both hands:
"Honored lords, thank you for your escort. Please accept this token of gratitude from the Castel family..."
After some initial refusals, the Demon Hunting Knight accepted the money pouch and weighed it in his hand, breaking into a smile.
He tossed the pouch to his companion, then placed his right hand over his heart and gave a bow, saying:
"Miss Charlotte, you are too kind. My name is Chatham, a Starry First Tier Knight and Captain of the Third Squad of the Bold Demon Hunting Institute."
"Should you need anything in the future, you may find me at the Bold Demon Hunting Institute."
"Miss Charlotte, until we meet again!"
With that, the Demon Hunting Knights mounted their horses and prepared to depart.
At this moment, Black Cat Nisi arrived, panting heavily from afar.
Upon reaching the carriage, it collapsed on the ground, limbs splayed out, belly up, gasping:
"Huff... huff... finally... finally here..."
"Damn it's far... seriously damn far! Nearly killed ol' Master Cat!"
Seeing its breathless state, the Demon Hunting Knight Captain hesitated, then earnestly advised:
"Lord Nisi, even if you're trying to lose weight... moderation is key!"
Nisi: ...
