Chapter 12: -10- The Resurgence of the Evil God
Outside the window, the sun hung high.
But inside the office, Nisi felt a chilling cold run through his hands and feet.
Its fur bristled slightly, and its hoarse voice shook a bit,
"Evil God? Damn it! So... are you trying to say last night's sacrifice woke up an Evil God?"
Dean Lawuer nodded:
"More precisely, it's very likely that Mrs. Castel had come into contact with something before the sacrifice, which drew the attention of some entities."
He locked eyes with the female Knight, his expression grave:
"The recent conversation with the young Miss of the Castel family also confirms this. Inside Castel Manor, similar symbols have been present for quite some time."
"Meow... if I may be so bold, are you sure about this? It looks more to me like a furniture pattern that's popular over in Coria..."
Black Cat picked up the parchment and examined it back and forth, its design strikingly familiar to that of its imported cat bed from Coria Kingdom.
After all, it was a present from a Divine Church priestess from the church school.
"Nisi, be serious. This isn't a joke!"
Lawuer's face was stern.
With a deep sigh, he said:
"Actually, this is what's most terrifying."
"If this symbol has appeared long ago, do you understand what that means?"
"It means that this mysterious deity was likely plotting its resurgence long ago..."
"As for Mrs. Castel, perhaps without knowing, she was already contaminated by another Evil God."
"We speculate that she thought she was sacrificing to the Blood Demon Duke, but in fact, from the very beginning, it was a sacrifice to some sleeping Evil God."
"The symbol she drew, from the start, wasn't the Blood Demon Symbol of the Blood Demon Duke, but this pattern instead."
"And this mysterious Evil God... may well have used this sacrifice to descend into this world in the guise of the Donor."
Upon hearing Lawuer's words, Nisi couldn't sit still anymore:
"Meow! This is serious! No wonder there's talk of the Judgement Court getting involved... Such a dangerous affair, hasn't the Great Priest reported this to the Diocesan Chief Priest?"
It spoke and then quickly answered its own question:
"Right, the Great Priest will have the chance to compete for the position of Chief Priest in less than a year. If he succeeds, he'd be able to leave this miserable place..."
"He certainly wouldn't want any mishaps in this crucial period that would give his competitors an advantage. He would definitely try to suppress this and have it dealt with internally!"
"Even if it means dragging his feet without dealing with it, it won't matter to him once he's been promoted!"
"Fortunately, an Evil God just newly resurrected is generally very weak. If it could be located before it regains full strength, even a Mortal would have the opportunity to banish it again!"
As he spoke, it suddenly paused, realizing:
"Wait a second, so... from the beginning you weren't going there to check that little one's wounds, but because you suspected that the unharmed girl might actually be the descended Evil God?!"
"Meow! You... were probing to see if she was possessed by the Evil God?"
Dean Lawuer and Kara locked eyes for a moment, then nodded slightly:
"That's correct."
"And the result? Hm... it must be fine now, otherwise you wouldn't be standing here talking to me."
"Yes, she passed the test of the Holy Fire. She's a devout believer, and a good, obedient child."
"A devout believer? But as far as I know, the Castel heir has been frail since childhood, hardly leaving the manor all these years. She's never even attended the Noble Academy, how could she be a believer?"
Nisi was puzzled.
"Perhaps... it's Mrs. Castel's influence. These years she's hidden her Blood Demon identity, ostentatiously being a devout believer, donating a good amount of gold tanas to the Church Hospital."
Lawuer shook his head.
"That must be it."
Nisi found this explanation to be the most plausible.
Stretching out its paw, it scrutinized the symbol on the parchment again:
"So... the next task is to find this hidden Evil God, meow?"
"This won't be easy. Master Cat has seen his share of the world. An Evil God in this age wanting to hide can be very difficult to track down. If we're not careful, in a decade or so another Evil God Church could emerge... Damn it, if it's like you said, there might already be one growing in Coria!"
Dean Lawuer nodded his head:
"That's correct, but... Its condition shouldn't be good, or rather, very poor. If it tries to regain its strength, it will definitely have to show itself."
"That it healed Charlotte means that it probably isn't one of those utterly chaotic and evil Evil Gods. Such a deity... generally has certain standards and leans more towards order."
"But it's still an Evil God indeed, an enemy of the Holy Royal Court, a being that needs to be sealed and banished!"
Nisi warned with a meaningful tone.
"Of course I know."
Lawuer nodded slightly.
He put away the parchment and pondered:
"The Blood Demon Sect has been restless lately, likely brewing some major plot. If this resurrected Evil God discovers it, it definitely won't miss this opportunity."
"If the Divine Church handles this properly, this could also be an opportunity to eradicate all the hidden Blood Demon Forces in Bold in one fell swoop."
"And if we're lucky, we might even be able to seal and banish this mysterious Evil God, gaining twice the result with half the effort!"
Nisi's mind stirred:
"Wait, was the little one healed by the Evil God?"
"It's just a guess, and the most likely one at that."
Dean Lawuer said.
Nisi's cat face turned serious:
"Lawuer, a deity's every move is never aimless."
"Since She healed the heir of the Castel family, it shows she's already come under the deity's scrutiny."
"Have someone keep a close watch on her. To find this Evil God, the key might very well lie with that little one!"
"But! Watch out for those foolish Nobles! They are a pack of greedy hyenas!"
"Hmm, and... each deity's symbol is unique. It may vary over the long course of history, but the kernel of what a deity symbolizes remains fundamentally constant."
"Thorns… roses…"
"It's worth investigating thoroughly, which deity from history this symbol, this emblem, belongs to."
Lawuer glanced at the female Knight and smiled:
"You don't need to worry about that, Kara will be taking over the investigation into this matter. Also... Nisi, your words have reminded me, there's another thing I'd like to ask of you."
"No way!"
"A serving of honey-glazed spine dragon wings from the Northern Territory Grand Duchy."
"Slurp~! Spit it out, what do you want me to do?"
...
"Huff... it's finally over..."
Charlotte collapsed on the bed, her face filled with relief and relaxation.
She knew that her identity was safe for the moment.
The healing effect of the Divine Flame was indeed powerful.
Though her limbs were still tightly wrapped up, she could feel that the wounds had begun to scab over.
In a few days, she would be able to make a full recovery and leave the hospital.
But compared to the wounds that would heal sooner or later, Charlotte had now become more interested in something else.
That was the Blood Holy Scripture, whose origins and capabilities she had yet to thoroughly understand.
This mysterious tome that was clearly related to the Bloodline had saved her twice and introduced her into an even more mysterious and magnificent world.
Now, Charlotte was filled with relentless curiosity about that world.
With this in mind, Charlotte closed her eyes and sank back into her consciousness.
In her mind, the ancient tome was still floating.
Its glow was crimson with hints of gold shimmering through.
Above the Holy Scripture, the "Blood Summon" section.
The cooldown progress had reached 81%.
Although she did not yet know the specific effects of the ability recorded in the Chapter of Origin currently on cooldown, by analogy with the "Divine Technique Counter" in the Divine Chapter, it likely wouldn't disappoint her.
Blood Summon, Blood Summon...
By its name, Charlotte guessed that this ability might involve summoning some demons or Favored creatures.
Now, being alone and vulnerable, having some "hitters" would indeed be a safeguard.
"Only 19% to go, I might as well take advantage of the Church's power over the next few days and use the Divine Flame for a Holy Scripture Charging?" she pondered.
"That Knight named Kara is too dangerous, maybe I can ask Lotti to help under the guise of healing!"
Charlotte thought.
Speak of the devil, and he shall appear.
Just as Charlotte was considering if she could fleece the Church for Holy Scripture Charging under the ruse of healing from Lotti's Divine Arts, a gentle knock on the door sounded again:
"Miss Charlotte, may I come in?"
It was... Priest Lotti!
Charlotte's spirit lifted as she recognized the voice.
She quickly opened her eyes, shrunk back into the covers, and resumed her feeble and pitiable demeanor as she squeaked out:
"Please... come in!"
No sooner had she spoken than the door was gently pushed open, and the beautiful and dignified Priest entered.
Charlotte smiled sweetly.
She was just about to start ingratiating herself with Lotti when the Priest spoke up first:
"Miss Charlotte, the people from the Bold family wish to see you, they are waiting outside."
