Chapter 31: 31
Yurei sighed, her hand resting on her hip as she stood at the front of the classroom, her expression caught somewhere between amusement and resignation. How had it come to this? Of all the punishments Soi Fon could have chosen, this one had to take the cake. Paperwork would have been preferable—tedious, yes, but at least it didn't involve dealing with a room full of spiritually aware teenagers.
Her outfit was an odd mix of practicality and style, designed to blend into the Living World while still reflecting her unique flair. A tailored blazer with subtle floral embroidery, paired with a flowing skirt and a lightweight scarf, gave her an air of refined elegance. Her silvery-white hair, catching the sunlight streaming through the windows, only added to her otherworldly presence.
The classroom was abuzz with whispered conversations as the students sized her up.
Yurei closed her eyes briefly, letting out a sigh. The situation felt surreal, and the whispers weren't helping. What even was the standard curriculum for the Living World? Math? Science? She barely remembered the basics, having had no need for such things in Soul Society. Her thoughts wandered to her time training under Yoruichi. If teaching was her punishment, why not make it entertaining?
Her lips curved into a serene smile as she turned back to the students. "Alright, everyone. Today's lesson is on functional analysis."
The room fell silent, the phrase hanging in the air like a foreign language.
Ichigo furrowed his brow. "Functional what now?" he muttered.
Rukia, seated beside him, leaned closer. "It sounds like something Yoruichi might've taught her. No idea why we're the guinea pigs, though."
Another student raised a hand hesitantly. "Um, sensei? What's… functional analysis?"
Yurei tapped the chalk against the board thoughtfully. "It's a branch of mathematics, but not the kind you're used to. Think of it as math's way of analyzing infinite-dimensional spaces."
Blank stares greeted her explanation.
Ichigo blinked. "Yeah, that clears up everything."
Yurei chuckled softly. "Relax, I'm not expecting you to master it. This is about learning to think differently, to approach problems with logic and creativity." She began writing a series of symbols and equations on the board, the fluid motion of her hand making it seem effortless.
The symbols looked alien to the students. One whispered, "This isn't math… this is wizardry."
"Don't worry," Yurei said, glancing over her shoulder with a playful glint in her eyes. "You're not expected to solve this right away. Consider it an introduction to a world of infinite possibilities."
Ichigo slouched further in his seat. "Great, we're being taught by someone who thinks infinite math is a punishment."
Rukia smirked. "You'd prefer history? Or maybe a lesson on how to dodge hollow attacks?"
"Honestly? Yeah."
Before Yurei could respond, her expression shifted subtly, her eyes narrowing as she turned her head slightly toward the window. The faintest flicker of reiatsu, unfamiliar yet unmistakable, brushed against her senses. Her smile softened into something more serious, though she kept her tone light.
"Well, students," she began, clapping her hands lightly as if concluding the lesson, "it seems class is dismissed a bit early today. Something urgent has come up."
The students exchanged confused glances, some relieved by the sudden reprieve, others curious about her abrupt change in demeanor.
Ichigo leaned forward, his brow furrowing. "Wait, what? You're leaving already?"
Yurei gave him a small, apologetic smile. "It's been fun, but this was always going to be a one-time thing. Besides," she added with a mischievous glint in her eyes, "I think I've left you with enough to ponder for a while."
She started toward the door but paused, glancing over her shoulder at Rukia. "Rukia, you're coming with me."
Rukia blinked in surprise, then quickly gathered her things. "What's going on?" she asked, her voice low enough that only Yurei could hear.
Yurei's tone was calm but firm as she replied. "Something's off. I sensed a strange reiatsu nearby, and it's not one we should ignore."
Ichigo stood abruptly, his chair scraping against the floor. "If something's going on, I'm coming too."
Yurei shook her head, her silvery hair swaying. "Not this time, Kurosaki. Stay here and keep an eye on things. This might just be a scouting presence, but I'd rather not leave the school unguarded."
Ichigo's frown deepened, but before he could argue, Yurei gave him a reassuring smile. "Don't worry. Rukia and I can handle it. If it turns into something bigger, I'll let you know."
Rukia, now at Yurei's side, nodded in agreement. "We'll assess the situation and report back if needed."
With that, Yurei slid open the door, her hand resting lightly on the hilt of her Zanpakutō. As the two women stepped out into the hallway, the faint pressure of reiatsu grew stronger, more distinct.
"Yurei," Rukia whispered as they moved swiftly through the building, "do you think it's another Bount?"
"It's possible," Yurei replied, her tone measured. "But it's too faint to tell for sure. Whoever it is, they're keeping their presence suppressed—probably testing the waters."
The two exited the school, their eyes scanning the surroundings as they stepped into the open air. The faint trace of reiatsu lingered on the breeze, leading them toward the outskirts of the campus.
"I see," Rukia muttered, her eyes narrowing as she focused on the trail of spiritual pressure. After a moment, she glanced sideways at Yurei. "By the way, why are you even here? You're a Lieutenant of the Second Division. Isn't this kind of assignment beneath you?"
Yurei scratched the back of her head, an easy smile tugging at her lips. "Well, Soi Fon assigned me to you, so I guess you could say I'm your new shadow for the time being. Basically, I'm supposed to follow you around until she says otherwise. Consider me your... overly qualified babysitter."
Rukia sighed, clearly unimpressed. "That doesn't explain why you're suddenly playing substitute teacher."
Yurei chuckled softly. "Let's just say the Living World has its quirks. Besides, I thought it'd be fun to see how you and Ichigo handle things here. So far, it's been... educational."
Rukia shot her a sidelong glance. "You're not taking this seriously, are you?"
"Oh, I'm taking it seriously," Yurei replied, her tone softening. "But just because I'm serious doesn't mean I have to look like it all the time."
Their conversation paused as the reiatsu trail grew stronger, more distinct. Yurei's expression shifted, her gaze sharpening.
"Anyway," Yurei continued, her voice now laced with purpose, "the Hollow is pretty close. I can feel it circling, like it's waiting for the right moment to strike."
Rukia nodded, her hand instinctively moving to the hilt of her blade. "Then let's not keep it waiting. We'll deal with this quickly and get back before Ichigo does something stupid."
Yurei's smile returned, though it was tinged with a hint of mischief. "That's the spirit. Besides, I can't let you have all the fun. Let's show this Hollow why it picked the wrong place to mess with."
The two moved in unison, their steps synchronized as they followed the trail of spiritual pressure. It led them to a clearing just beyond the school grounds, where the air felt heavier, charged with anticipation.
Emerging from the shadows, the Hollow revealed itself—a towering, insect-like creature with jagged limbs and a gaping maw. Its glowing eyes locked onto the pair, and it let out a deafening roar.
Yurei tilted her head slightly, her hand resting lightly on her Zanpakutō. Her gaze swept over the towering, insect-like Hollow, taking in its jagged limbs and grotesque mask. "Well, it's not the prettiest Hollow I've seen. Menos Grande always seem to have the worst appearances. You'd think for something with that much reiatsu, they'd have better taste in aesthetics."
Rukia sighed, already drawing her blade. "Focus, Yurei."
Yurei smiled faintly, leaning back against a nearby tree with an air of nonchalance. "Oh, I'm focused, don't worry. But I was thinking... since you're technically my captain for the time being, how about you handle this one? I'm not really in the mood to fight today. I'll just watch and cheer you on."
Rukia froze mid-step, turning to glare at her. "Seriously? You're a Lieutenant of the Second Division, and you're just going to sit this one out?"
Yurei raised her hands defensively, her expression one of feigned innocence. "Hey, I'm giving you the chance to shine. Besides, this one's not that strong. Consider it a training exercise."
The Hollow let out a guttural roar, clearly irritated by being ignored, its massive form starting to lurch forward.
Rukia gritted her teeth. "You're unbelievable. Fine, but if this thing ends up being stronger than you think, I'm dragging you into the fight whether you like it or not."
Yurei gave her an encouraging smile, her green-and-gold eyes gleaming with amusement. "Fair enough. I'll be right here if you need me. Go on, Rukia, show me what you've got."
With a resigned sigh, Rukia turned back to the Hollow, her grip tightening on her Zanpakutō. Though her blade remained sheathed, she began to gather her spiritual energy. The air around her crackled faintly, a subtle sign of the Kido spell she was preparing.
The Hollow snarled, its grotesque limbs twitching as it sensed the rising energy. It lunged forward, its claws tearing through the air with alarming speed.
Rukia didn't flinch. Instead, she raised her hand, her voice calm and steady. "Hado #33: Sokatsui."
A burst of blue energy shot from her palm, slamming into the Hollow with devastating force. The creature reeled, its roar echoing through the air as smoke and flames engulfed its body.
Yurei leaned casually against a nearby tree, her arms crossed as she watched the fight unfold. A faint smile graced her lips. "Sokatsui? A classic choice. Efficient and controlled. Not bad."
The Hollow staggered, its monstrous form smoldering but still functional. It roared again, charging Rukia with reckless fury.
She stepped to the side gracefully, her movements deliberate. With her free hand, she began chanting, her voice low and precise. "Bakudo #61: Rikujokoro."
Six rods of light materialized around the Hollow, slamming into its midsection and pinning it in place. The creature thrashed wildly, unable to move its limbs as the golden restraints held it firm.
Yurei tilted her head, observing the Hollow's struggles. "Rikujokoro, too? Someone's been practicing. Your control over Bakudo has definitely improved."
Rukia ignored the comment, her focus unwavering as she began another incantation. "Hado #73: Soren Sokatsui!"
Twin blasts of blue fire erupted from her palms, merging into a massive wave of energy that engulfed the immobilized Hollow. The impact shook the ground, and when the smoke cleared, the creature had disintegrated completely, its spiritual form reduced to nothingness.
Lowering her hands, Rukia exhaled, her shoulders relaxing slightly. "There. It's done."
Yurei clapped softly, her smile warm and genuine. "Nicely handled. You didn't even draw your blade, and you dispatched it efficiently. Impressive work."
Rukia turned to her, still catching her breath. "You could've stepped in, you know. Instead of just standing there."
Yurei chuckled lightly and pushed off the tree, her tone playful. "Why would I? You had it under control. Besides, this was a good warm-up for you. A little practice never hurts."
Rukia narrowed her eyes, clearly unimpressed. "You're impossible."
Yurei grinned, walking over to her companion. "Maybe, but you're getting stronger, Rukia. If you keep at it, you'll surpass even your own expectations."
Rukia sighed, shaking her head as she brushed some dust from her sleeve. "I'm not sure if that's encouragement or just you trying to get out of doing any work."
Yurei's grin widened. "Can't it be both?"
As they turned to head back to the school, Yurei glanced at the sky, her expression softening. "You know, you've got a lot of potential, Rukia. Don't let it go to waste."
Rukia glanced at her, a small smile tugging at the corners of her lips. "I'll keep that in mind."
