Chapter 29: 29
As she turned to leave, a faint, mocking laugh echoed from within the glowing cocoon of petals.
"Ahaha! I admit it, you are definitely strong," Kariya's voice carried through the barrier, sharp and defiant. "But did you really think something like this could take me down?!"
Yurei paused mid-step, her gaze narrowing slightly. She tilted her head, speaking over her shoulder with an almost lazy tone. "I admire the determination, but take the hint—just stay down. It'll save you a lot of pain."
Before her words could settle, a violent gust erupted from within the cocoon. The glowing petals trembled, then began to disintegrate, torn apart by a growing vortex of wind. Yurei turned fully to face him, her expression calm, though her eyes gleamed with sharp focus. The tornado expanded, the force of its winds carving into the ground and kicking up a blinding dust storm.
"You seem to have misunderstood something, Soul Reaper," Kariya said, stepping through the dissipating petals, his form outlined by a glowing green aura. His voice was filled with confidence, almost smug. "We're not in the Living World where the reishi is sparse. We're in the Soul Society! Here, the reishi is abundant—and it's mine for the taking!"
As the cocoon fully shattered, Kariya stood unscathed, his previously battered form now completely healed. His aura surged with newfound power, the air around him vibrating with the force of his reiatsu. The wind swirling around him condensed into visible streams, coiling like serpents ready to strike.
Yurei's gaze flicked over him, analyzing his enhanced state. "So, you've learned to absorb the reishi here to amplify your abilities," she said, her voice calm. "I'll admit, it's an impressive trick. But tricks only take you so far."
Kariya smirked, raising his hand as a blade of condensed wind materialized, shimmering with lethal precision. "You still don't get it, do you? Here, I'm stronger than I've ever been. Your petals won't save you this time."
Without hesitation, he slashed the wind blade toward her, releasing a massive arc of slicing air. The attack tore through the ground as it barreled toward Yurei. She stepped forward, raising her Zanpakutō with a flick of her wrist, sending a cascade of glowing petals to intercept the strike. The wind and petals collided, creating a burst of energy that cracked the surrounding ground.
Kariya didn't stop. He thrust his hand forward, summoning a whirlwind that surged toward Yurei. The vortex howled with ferocity, uprooting nearby structures and sending debris flying. Yurei's form blurred as she disappeared, reappearing high above the battlefield, her silvery hair flowing in the turbulent winds.
"Shirayuri," she murmured, the petals around her glowing brighter. "Let's see how far this wind can take you."
With a wave of her blade, the petals condensed into sharp, shimmering shards that rained down on Kariya in a deadly cascade. He raised his wind barrier, the petals striking against it with explosive force. The ground around him cracked under the pressure, but his barrier held firm.
"You'll have to do better than that!" Kariya shouted, sending a surge of wind outward, scattering the petals. He vanished in a blur of speed, reappearing behind Yurei with his wind blade poised to strike.
Yurei turned her head slightly, her green-and-gold eyes catching the motion. As Kariya swung, she raised her Zanpakutō just in time to block, the clash of their weapons creating a shockwave that echoed across the battlefield.
"You're fast," Yurei admitted, her voice calm despite the pressure. "But speed without control is meaningless."
With a twist of her blade, she redirected his strike, forcing him off balance. In the same motion, she unleashed a burst of petals that enveloped him, their glow intensifying as they exploded with concentrated reiatsu. Kariya was sent hurtling backward, crashing into the ground with a heavy thud.
He groaned, pulling himself to his feet. His aura flared again, more intense this time. "You think this is over?" he snarled, his eyes wild. "I'll show you the true power of a Bount!"
The air around him vibrated as his reiatsu surged, the wind forming a massive vortex that spiraled toward Yurei, larger and more destructive than before. She stood her ground, her blade glowing with an ethereal light as she raised it.
"Then show me," Yurei said, her voice cutting through the roaring storm with icy calm. Her Zanpakutō shimmered with an ethereal glow, the petals surrounding her spiraling outward like a celestial dance. "I'll end it just the same. Bloom, Shirayuri."
The air itself seemed to hold its breath as she moved. With a single, graceful slash, a wave of concentrated reiatsu burst forth, colliding with the massive vortex. The clash created a deafening explosion that shook the ground and shattered nearby structures, the force of it sending shockwaves rippling through the battlefield. As the smoke and debris cleared, the once-devastating vortex was gone, utterly dissipated by Yurei's strike.
From within the haze, Kariya emerged, his figure outlined by the eerie green glow of his reishi. His movements were a blur as he raised his hand, pointing a finger directly at Yurei. A condensed blade of wind began to form at its tip, its sharp edges crackling with raw energy.
"Wind Licht Schneide!" Kariya roared, unleashing the attack. The blade of wind tore through the air with devastating speed, its cutting edge slicing cleanly through the terrain as it raced toward Yurei.
Yurei didn't flinch. Her eyes, glowing with a fierce determination, tracked the incoming attack with precision. In one fluid motion, she raised her Zanpakutō and swiped it horizontally. A barrier of spectral white petals formed instantly, intercepting the wind blade. The collision created a brilliant flash of light, and the energy dispersed harmlessly around her.
"Not bad," Yurei said, her voice even, as if she were merely commenting on the weather. "But not enough."
Kariya gritted his teeth, his frustration evident. "Enough of your arrogance!" he shouted, summoning another surge of reishi. The winds around him intensified, forming a sphere of chaotic energy. His green aura pulsed violently as he channeled his full power into the attack.
Yurei's expression remained unchanging, her gaze piercing. "You rely too much on brute force," she said, stepping forward, her petals swirling around her like a protective storm. "It's reckless. Predictable."
With a flick of her wrist, the petals began to coalesce, forming dozens of glowing spectral lilies that hovered in the air around her. Each flower pulsed with concentrated reiatsu, their soft glow belying the deadly power they held.
"Shirayuri, Hanabira no Odori," she intoned, her voice carrying a weight that seemed to make the air itself tremble.
The lilies shot forward in unison, their speed overwhelming. Kariya's sphere of wind struggled to repel the onslaught, but the petals sliced through the chaotic winds as if they were paper. The first wave struck Kariya's barrier, sending cracks spidering across its surface. The second wave shattered it entirely, and the remaining petals surged toward him.
Kariya crossed his arms, summoning a final burst of wind to shield himself, but it was futile. The petals exploded upon impact, each one releasing a concentrated blast of reiatsu that rocked the battlefield. When the dust settled, Kariya was kneeling, his body battered and his aura flickering weakly.
He coughed, blood staining the corner of his mouth, but his eyes still burned with defiance. "You think... this is over?" he rasped, struggling to stand.
Yurei stepped forward, her blade resting at her side, glowing faintly. "You're persistent," she acknowledged, her tone carrying a note of respect. "But this fight was decided the moment you underestimated me."
Kariya let out a low growl, his legs shaking as he forced himself upright. His aura flared weakly, a last-ditch effort to summon what little power he had left.
Yurei tilted her head slightly, her green-and-gold eyes locking onto him. "Stay down, Kariya. There's no shame in knowing your limits. Push any further, and you'll leave me no choice but to finish this."
Kariya hesitated, the weight of Yurei's words sinking in. Her composure, unyielding and resolute, carried an authority that made even his defiance waver for a brief moment. But his pride, that indomitable force that had driven him this far, wouldn't allow him to back down. With a roar of frustration and desperation, he lunged forward, his wind blade forming once again in his hand, crackling with renewed intensity.
Yurei let out a soft sigh, her expression almost pitying. "You really don't get it, do you?" she murmured. Her gaze shifted briefly, as if looking beyond Kariya, into the far reaches of Soul Society. "You think this is just about you and me? You don't think I sense all the Bounts you've sent scuttling through the Seireitei like rats? You've scattered your forces, thinking it'll divide our attention. But you've made a critical mistake."
She raised her hand, the air around her shimmering with an ominous energy as her petals began to intensify their glow. "I can deal with all of them. Right here. Right now. Every last one of your plans will crumble before me—the one to whom the petals yield."
Kariya's steps faltered, the ferocity in his charge momentarily dimmed by the weight of her words. But Yurei wasn't done. Her eyes closed briefly, as if offering a silent apology to the destruction she was about to unleash. "Hopefully, the Commander won't be too mad at me for this," she said, her voice carrying a wry undertone.
Then her eyes snapped open, the air around her shifting violently as her reiatsu exploded outward, shaking the very foundation of the battlefield. Her voice rang out like a bell, clear and commanding.
"Bankai. Kagami no Shirayuri Enbu."
Across Soul Society, a ripple of shock and awe passed through its defenders. The crystalline mirrors, erupting from the ground and stretching endlessly into the horizon, reflected the sky and those who gazed upon them. Captains, lieutenants, and foot soldiers alike found their surroundings transformed into an alien yet mesmerizing world of glowing lilies and haunting reflections.
Hitsugaya Tōshirō paused mid-step atop a hill overlooking the Rukongai. His sharp teal eyes narrowed as he gripped Hyōrinmaru, the overwhelming weight of spiritual pressure pressing against him. Rangiku Matsumoto stood beside him, her usually casual demeanor replaced by unease.
"This... this isn't normal," she murmured, her gaze fixed on the mirrors and petals that swirled in the distance. "It's like Soul Society itself has been rewritten."
"It's not just abnormal," Hitsugaya replied, his voice grim. "This level of Bankai affects everything, everywhere. It's beyond what even a captain is capable of."
Further away, Renji Abarai stumbled as a wave of reiatsu coursed through him. The petals brushing past him carried an unearthly energy, each one humming with power.
"Is this... Yurei's doing?" he asked aloud, gripping Zabimaru tightly. His voice betrayed his disbelief.
Rukia Kuchiki, standing nearby, looked around in awe and trepidation. "It must be," she said. "There's no one else in Soul Society with an ability like this. But to cover such a vast area…"
Even the stoic Byakuya Kuchiki, standing far from the fray, raised an eyebrow as the mirrored world reflected him from countless angles. His hand rested on Senbonzakura's hilt, though he made no move to draw it.
"This Bankai," he murmured to himself, "is both an act of beauty and an act of dominance. A power like this does not come without consequence."
In the heart of the battlefield, Kariya felt the crushing weight of Yurei's Bankai bearing down on him. The mirrors surrounding him distorted his form, reflecting him in infinite variations that shifted and twisted with every move he made. The swirling petals, razor-sharp and glowing, formed an ever-tightening storm around him.
"So this is your Bankai," Kariya said, his voice strained but defiant. "A realm of illusions and power. Impressive, but it won't be enough to stop me!"
Yurei, standing at the center of the mirrored domain, her silvery-white hair flowing weightlessly around her, tilted her head slightly. "You're mistaken," she said calmly. "This isn't just a realm—it's judgment. Your very existence is reflected here, and your flaws magnified. There's nowhere to hide, Kariya. Nowhere to run."
As Kariya lunged, wind swirling around him, the mirrors responded instantly. His attack was captured, split, and reflected back at him in countless variations. He screamed in frustration as the mirrored battlefield seemed to toy with him, amplifying his attacks before turning them against him.
Elsewhere, the other Bounts, sensing the shift in the spiritual atmosphere, paused in their respective skirmishes. Yoshi tightened her grip on her blade, her smirk fading. "What kind of Soul Reaper can do this?" she muttered.
Go Koga, still nursing his injuries from earlier, glanced toward the horizon where the mirrors shone brightest. "Kariya... is this what you've unleashed us into?"
As the chaos unfolded, deep within the First Division barracks, Yamamoto Genryūsai Shigekuni, the Captain-Commander, stood silently, his hands clasped over his staff. His sharp eyes surveyed the transformed Soul Society through the open doors of his chamber.
"This girl..." he muttered, his voice low but weighted with meaning.
Shunsui Kyōraku, standing nearby, adjusted his hat and gave a faint whistle. "That's a lot of flair for someone who's just a lieutenant. Don't you think, Old Man?"
Yamamoto sighed heavily and shook his head. "Her power is undeniable, but this level of disruption... unnecessary. She forgets the delicate balance we maintain here."
Kyōraku chuckled, though his tone carried an edge of unease. "Well, she's certainly making an impression. Maybe too much of one."
Back on the battlefield, Yurei raised her hand, and the storm of petals condensed, swirling into a focused vortex that surrounded Kariya. He screamed as the mirrors closed in, their surfaces reflecting his struggle from every angle.
"Your plans end here," Yurei said softly, her voice reverberating through the mirrored domain. "And so does your pride. Someone like you doesn't deserve any final last words, neither do your comrades."
As the final strike descended, the mirrored realm shimmered, its light spilling across the entire Soul Society like the last gasp of a dying star.
