Chapter 93: Calamity Descends
Before the researcher could finish, his colleague interrupted. "Don't reveal classified information. We signed NDAs. Loose lips sink ships. Though, I suppose it doesn't matter in his case. He's not going anywhere."
"My apologies."
The researchers continued drawing blood, observing Li Mo's reaction. His expression remained unchanged, a mask of indifference. It was unsettling. He knew he was condemned to a lifetime of suffering, yet he showed no emotion.
They shared the same physiology, the same appearance, the same language… yet they felt like different species.
Li Mo's face paled from blood loss, but he still didn't flinch. He simply repeated his question: "Are you sure… you want to use my blood?"
The researchers were puzzled. They'd used it countless times. Excellent results, no side effects. What was he trying to say?
"Why wouldn't we? Are you trying to scare us with some fabricated consequence?"
Li Mo's lips moved, but he remained silent, his gaze fixed on them. Every gift from fate came with a price. He knew this well. His resets, his growing power, his resilience… all came at the cost of his humanity, his emotions, his sanity.
Every Bizarre power had a dark side.
Death always promised a beautiful day before the harvest.
"It's not just your blood. Every week, we'll swap your organs with Miss Mei's. You'll bear the burden of her Stigmata. You want to die, don't you? But your immortality is a treasure to us. So live, half-dead, for the sake of humanity. Help us conquer disease, conquer Honkai… consider it an honor… though, even I can't say that with a straight face."
"So you don't see me as human?" Li Mo asked quietly.
The researcher scoffed. "Do you see yourself as human?"
"I do."
"Then you want your fellow humans to be free from suffering, correct? Your pain will save countless lives. Think of the poor, the sick, the dying… can you comprehend their suffering?"
"Their suffering isn't my fault. I shouldn't bear that burden."
"But you can. Your blood… it neutralizes Honkai energy. A single drop can purify vast amounts of contaminated water. You're too valuable. Even if we let you go, other organizations wouldn't. Selfishness? Perhaps. But we can't afford to be idealistic. Not when we have such power in our grasp."
The blood bags were full. Each one could save lives, even if most ended up in the hands of the wealthy. The researchers knew they were just cogs in the machine. Even if they refused, someone else would do it. Profit trumped morality.
"My blood… it comes with a price. You will pay for what you've taken. The consequences will return, amplified, distorted."
The researcher didn't deny it. "Wise words for a child. But humanity is… flawed. We yearn for the sky while trapped in the mire. We dream of beauty while embracing ugliness. Even without you, we destroy our own world for petty gains. As long as the pain isn't our own, we don't care. Even when it arrives, we blame the past, not ourselves."
"This is humanity. Your… fellow humans."
The researchers left, their precious cargo in hand. Li Mo endured more surgeries, organ after organ transplanted into Mei. He felt the Honkai corruption within him, a writhing, spreading darkness, trying to consume his mind.
He died, and was reborn, the pain a constant companion.
A year passed. The transplants were complete. He was moved to another lab. Blood drawn, tendons severed, bones broken, then healed, then broken again. An endless cycle of torture and regeneration.
His only connection to the outside world was a television, broadcasting news reports about his blood's miraculous properties, the lives it had saved. He didn't care. He waited, trapped in his cage, for the day depicted in the painting.
At Schicksal HQ, Otto examined a vial of crimson blood.
"You want to use this on our Valkyries? To protect them from Honkai corruption?" He placed the vial on the table, unimpressed.
"Yes, Overseer. It's incredibly effective. Anti-Entropy is already using it, even in their mechs. It's devastating against Honkai beasts."
"One question. What's the source? And what's the price?"
"We… we don't have a scientific explanation yet. Just empirical evidence."
"Anti-Entropy has been studying him for ten years. You think they haven't tried to find the source?"
"But the results…"
"Results without understanding are meaningless. I won't risk my Valkyries on something I don't understand." He wouldn't jeopardize his plans for an unknown variable, no matter how promising.
"Let Anti-Entropy have their miracle cure. It's a gamble. We understand Honkai. We don't need to rely on… unconventional methods. Even the worst gambler knows not to bet on something he doesn't understand. Humanity's greatest fear, its greatest enemy, is the unknown. Those who rely on luck will receive a fool's reward."
Otto knew his time was running out. He couldn't afford any mistakes.
Years passed. The final battle approached.
Thanks to Li Mo's blood, humanity gained the upper hand, suppressing the Cocoon of Finality, allowing Kiana to become the Herrscher of the Finality, Earth's new guardian.
Humanity would transcend the Finality.
The day before Kiana was to rewrite the Cocoon's rules, she and Mei visited Chiba Academy, standing on the rooftop, watching the sunrise, a symbol of hope and a new beginning.
"After everything… we'll be separated again," Kiana said sadly.
"No. We'll face it together," Mei replied, holding her hand.
They smiled. The Honkai was defeated. Peace had returned.
Kiana would return to the moon, use the Cocoon's power to stop the cycle of reincarnation, and shield Earth with the power of the Finality.
"Don't worry, Mei. I won't let you down. Look, everyone's safe, aren't they?"
Mei nodded, her heart filled with hope.
"Just go home and sleep, Mei. When you wake up… everything will be different."
Mei smiled. "I believe you, Kiana."
She returned home, falling into a peaceful sleep.
On the moon, Kiana unleashed the power of the Finality. But something was wrong. A foreign energy, dark and chaotic, twisted and pulsed within the Cocoon.
"I have to stop this." She tried to withdraw her power, but it was too late.
Blood seeped from the Cocoon's eye, flooding the lunar base.
"Use the Herrscher of the Void's power! Contain it!"
"Wait… I can't connect to the Imaginary Space!" Her connection to her powers was severed.
"Impossible!" Even in the Sea of Quanta, the connection remained, albeit weakened. This was different. She couldn't even sense it.
Before she could react, the blood engulfed her, filling her lungs, her eyes, her ears, her mouth…
