Chapter 76: Memetic Contamination
The newly born Bizarre Kiana inherited all of Kiana's abilities, and even some of her distorted habits and behaviors.
Etched into her very being was the primal directive, the last words Li Mo spoke to her: "I love you."
Born alongside her were fragments of Kiana's discarded self, remnants of the countless resets:
A. Cognitive Bizarre: Born from Kiana's fractured perception.
B. Misfortune Bizarre: A twisted reflection of her former luck and heroic destiny.
C. Head Bizarre: A manifestation of Kiana's obsession with Li Mo's head, her desire to create a new body for him, to keep him with her, even though she knew he was truly gone. This Bizarre sought out suitable bodies and manipulated memories.
Trapped in an endless cycle of resets, Bizarre Kiana meticulously recreated their home, arranging the shoes, setting out Li Mo's favorite canned fruits, placing the chairs around the table—echoes of her former life.
St. Freya, the snowy wasteland, their home—these locations became temporal anomalies, their outward appearance normal, their inner workings corrupted by endless, repeating time loops.
And then, Li Mo arrived at St. Freya, awakening dormant emotions within Bizarre Kiana.
Back in the real world:
"Pardofelis, break down the door!" Dr. MEI commanded.
Pardofelis stared at the door, a solid oak barrier that shouldn't exist in this timeline, her eyes glowing crimson. The door splintered into fragments, as if shredded by invisible claws.
She licked a trace of blood from her lips, a predatory glint in her eyes.
"No, no, Pardo. We can't be violent." Elysia gently stroked Pardofelis's ears, calming her bloodlust.
"That was close… I almost killed someone… Huh? Who are those two girls on Mo-bro's bed?"
Pardofelis stared at the two Kianas, identical expressions of sorrow etched on their faces, tears of blood tracing paths down their cheeks. One smiled sadly, the other with a chilling grimace.
"Can you suppress them?" Dr. MEI asked Elysia.
Elysia shook her head. "It would be difficult. I can only manage one at a time. Otherwise, Pardo will lose control. And I'm not even sure I can suppress even one… They're just too… pretty. My powers weaken against beautiful girls like myself. It's so frustrating!"
"Then we observe. We intervene only when necessary." Dr. MEI held Pardofelis close.
The three of them, plus one cat, watched from the doorway. If even Elysia couldn't fully suppress them, containment was impossible. Dr. MEI had anticipated the Bizzare Kiana's power, but this was beyond her expectations. Two of them?
Both Kianas stared blankly, their minds seemingly trapped in the moment they'd seen Li Mo's head in the dream.
"Dr. MEI, look!" Pardofelis pointed at a Notebook near Li Mo's pillow, bathed in the Kianas' blood-stained tears. Its worn cover was rapidly renewing itself. Memories, habits, thoughts, consciousness—everything that made a person human—converged within its pages.
"A Notebook?" Elysia blinked.
"Can, retrieve it." Dr. MEI tossed the tuna towards Pardofelis, her eyes fixed on the Notebook. It shouldn't be there. It was locked away. How…?
Had she overlooked it?
Could I have missed it? she wondered. She tried to rationalize it, but there were too many unknowns.
Elysia had just returned. She hadn't been near the vault.
Neither had Pardofelis or Can. He was under constant surveillance. Pardofelis had been summoned moments ago.
Li Mo was trapped in the dream, completely oblivious.
The dream was the Bizzare's domain. Li Mo, normally a light sleeper, was unresponsive, even with two ghosts clinging to him.
Was this the Notebook's doing? But why? And how did it escape?
Or… was there a fifth person in the house?
"Perhaps I'm mistaken. Why do I assume it's the same Notebook?"
"Pardofelis, stay here. I'll check the vault."
Dr. MEI raced to the vault, opening the layers of security. The Schicksal Overseer had sworn the vault was impenetrable, even to a Herrscher's full power. Dr. MEI had her doubts about the Overseer's integrity, but the vault itself showed no signs of damage.
"No breach? I'll open it."
She entered the code, scanned her fingerprint, and answered a security question only she and a conscious Li Mo could answer. Three layers of security: memory, biology, and consciousness. Even a partially corrupted individual couldn't bypass them.
But inside the vault… lay a Notebook.
"Two Notebooks? No. Bizarre entities are unique…"
Suddenly, she realized something.
"I scanned the room. I would have noticed the Notebook. It's too dangerous. I'm always cautious."
"But I didn't see it. Perhaps I was tired, I overlooked it."
"But Elysia didn't mention it. She knows it's dangerous. And her reaction when Pardofelis pointed it out… she hadn't seen it either."
"She suppresses Bizarre entities. They can't affect her. Unless…"
"Pardofelis… drew my attention to it. I only saw it after she pointed it out."
"Pardofelis… wait…"
She grabbed the Notebook from the vault and raced back to Li Mo's room.
Pardofelis, wearing Elysia's clothes, standing beside her, shouldn't be susceptible to Bizarre influence.
But she'd used her Honkai powers to destroy the door, deepening her own contamination. Perhaps another Bizarre entity had taken advantage of that moment of vulnerability…
Even if it couldn't control Pardofelis, it could manipulate her perception.
But what was the source of the contamination?
Elysia was here. The house was protected. Unless the contamination had entered through a carrier, making contact with Pardofelis, waiting for her to use her powers and create an opening in Elysia's protective aura.
Neither Pardofelis nor Can fit the criteria. Elysia was immune.
That left herself and Li Mo. Room 303? Or the ghost in the alley?
Li Mo had only encountered those two Bizarre entities since returning.
She burst back into the room.
"What's the situation?"
"Hmm… seems alright?" Elysia twirled a strand of pink hair.
The two Kianas were curled up against Li Mo, like children seeking comfort, clutching his shirt, tears streaming down their faces, lost in the dream.
If not for the oppressive Bizarre aura, it would have been a heartwarming scene.
"Dr. MEI, Can says there's writing on the Notebook," Pardofelis said.
Dr. MEI took the Notebook, its pages flipping open, revealing strange text.
It was the second page. A lavender scent filled the air.
An image appeared in Dr. MEI's mind. A girl, almost identical to herself, but younger, her face softer.
The girl turned, a chilling smile spreading across her face, her mouth widening as if enjoying the sensation of tearing flesh.
Elegant purple script filled the second page:
[Isn't this what you wanted? Why are you running?]
[We made a promise. You said you'd give me everything…]
[Mei's blood, her heart, her healthy body… they all belong to you, brother.]
"It smells wonderful~ MEI, what does it say? Wow, such beautiful handwriting! It must be a lovely girl, just like me!" Elysia peered at the page.
Dr. MEI grimaced. Wrong focus!
"The Bizarre is here. 'Brother'… it's talking about…" She looked at Li Mo, her worry turning to disgust.
Another unknown Bizarre, targeting Li Mo. Unknown rules, unknown power, unknown motives.
"MEI, give me the Notebook." Elysia's voice was suddenly serious.
Dr. MEI complied.
The Notebook dissolved into lavender petals, the image in her mind fading.
"What happened?"
"It was trying to contaminate you, to make you like it."
"Contaminate me? Turn me into a Notebook?"
"Perhaps. Or perhaps another lovely girl. You'd lose yourself, though. And you're already beautiful, MEI. You don't need to become anyone else." Elysia embraced her from behind.
Dr. MEI shuddered. If Elysia hadn't been there…
She looked at Pardofelis, a suspicion forming. "An illusion…"
Pardofelis squirmed under her gaze. "I… I don't know what happened! I just saw the Notebook and wanted to help!"
Dr. MEI smiled thinly, a purple glint in her eyes.
"I don't blame you. But I think I understand now."
One of them had brought the Bizarre into the house, contaminating Pardofelis's perception during her moment of weakness, using her to create the illusory Notebook, attempting to enter the real world, to replace her.
This wasn't the Bizzare Kiana's doing. She was still dormant. This was a different, more insidious entity.
"Memetic contamination… tricky. Too many unknowns. Perhaps this Notebook has some answers."
Carefully, she opened the real Notebook, noticing both the first and second pages were now accessible.
