Between Your Letter and My Reply

Chapter 65

They reported Ray to the staff at the information desk before leaving the museum. The staff member frowned and asked,

“Someone impersonating a curator? Could you describe their appearance?”

“It was a man with long blonde hair and thick bangs. His name was Ray, but I don’t know his last name. He offered to explain the paintings to me, but his behavior seemed a bit strange, and it bothered me.”

Damian was worried he might have said something unnecessary based on just his gut feeling, but the staff member listened to his story with a serious expression.

“Impersonating a curator can disrupt visitors’ experience by providing them with incorrect information about the artworks, so we’ll take action. I’ll inform the security team. Thank you for reporting this.”

Damian felt indifferent to the staff member’s words, but Lilliana looked pleased, as if she had accomplished something.

Lilliana left her unfinished canvas at the museum, paying a small storage fee. She explained that other people who were copying paintings also left their work at the museum while they took breaks or waited for the paint to dry.

While buying a museum catalog at the souvenir shop, Lilliana asked Damian,

“So, did you get to see any paintings?”

“I did, but…”

Damian scratched his head and replied hesitantly.

“Honestly, at first, I didn’t understand the meaning of the paintings, and after that, I only heard the explanations from that guy named Ray, so I couldn’t really appreciate them properly.”

“Really? That’s a shame. I could have shown you through the catalog, but I thought it would be better to see the originals and get a feel for them while I practiced my painting… I’ll explain them to you myself next time.”

“No, you don’t have to… Let’s just come back another time when there’s an actual curator. I bought the catalog today, so I’ll read through it.”

“Okay. We have other opportunities. Shall we head back for today?”

Lilliana shrugged and adjusted her grip on the art supplies. As they left the museum, the sun was still shining brightly.

But it was an awkward time to do anything else. Lilliana muttered, looking at the art supplies,

“I’d like to paint more since we’re already out…”

“You can paint here, can’t you?”

“Where?” Lilliana asked, and Damian thought for a moment before answering.

“You said you wanted to go to Lucero Square, right?”

“Yeah. But I was planning to go there later. Why all of a sudden?”

“You’re fast enough to draw a detailed portrait of my face in a short time, so I’m sure you can do some quick sketches of people on the street. There are many people in the square, so there will be plenty of subjects to draw. It’s an awkward time, but there’s not much to see in the square anyway. It’s only meaningful as a landmark, so it’s a good place to pass the time. I can read the catalog while you draw.”

Lilliana said in a slightly unsure voice,

“I was planning to do some sketching once my hand loosened up a bit more…”

“You can think of it as practice.”

“But I’m still embarrassed for people to see my drawings. I’m not usually this bad, but my skills have gotten rusty since I haven’t drawn in a while.”

“But you drew my face well.”

Damian added in a small voice,

“Although it was a bit idealized.”

Lilliana chuckled softly.

“Actually, I’m a bit disappointed with that drawing too. I couldn’t show my true skills…”

“Then let’s go.”

Damian picked up the art supplies and headed towards the tram stop, and Lilliana quickly followed.

“Hey, I didn’t mean we had to go right now…”

“If you don’t want to draw, you can just sit and people-watch. It’s surprisingly fun. There are street performances every day too.”

“I-Is that so? Are you feeling okay?”

“I’ve told you countless times that it’s not a problem. Lilliana, you complain when I ask about your health, but why are you doing the same to me? Put yourself in my shoes.”

“Well, you’re not wrong, but…”

Lilliana grumbled but naturally got on the tram.

“There are many famous restaurants near the square. The desserts are probably good too. And they also sell food on the streets.”

Damian saw Lilliana gulp at his words and couldn’t help but chuckle. Lilliana blinked at his sudden laughter and asked,

“Why? What’s so funny?”

“Oh… nothing.”

Damian quickly regained his usual expression and played dumb. But Lilliana tugged at his sleeve suspiciously.

“What? Why are you laughing? You don’t laugh easily. What made you laugh?”

Damian, realizing things were getting complicated, was reflecting on his actions when he heard the announcement for Lucero Square. He quickly stood up, escaping Lilliana’s grasp.

“Let’s get off.”

“Hey, at least tell me why you were laughing, Damian!”

Lilliana persistently followed him, demanding an answer, but she soon fell silent. As they walked a bit further into the square, the sight of the vast open space captivated her attention.

In the center of the square stood a marble statue of Saint Fabalty, who was said to have descended to earth 300 years ago.

Surrounding the statue were old buildings, each with a unique architectural style, yet harmoniously blending together to create a beautiful scene. The square and streets were bustling with people leisurely enjoying the afternoon.

Lilliana took in the sight with sparkling eyes.

‘Come to think of it, there was a statue of Saint Fabalty here too,’ Damian thought, gazing at the statue. The image of Lady Lintray in his mind resembled that of Fabalty. Bright blonde hair like sunlight, a dignified gaze, and an elegant posture. The only difference would be that Lintray had a playful side.

Damian stared at the statue of Fabalty, frowning, wondering if Lintray really resembled it. The image seemed similar…

“What are you looking at so intently, Damian?”

Lilliana asked, tilting her head curiously, seeing Damian’s serious expression as he almost glared at the statue of Fabalty.

“It’s nothing.”

Damian quickly shook his head and turned to her, then suddenly thought that Lilliana resembled Fabalty. He couldn’t pinpoint exactly what features were similar, but the overall impression was there.

Just then, the sun emerged from behind the clouds, casting a ray of sunlight on Lilliana’s right side. Seeing that, Damian realized that both Lilliana and Fabalty shared the quality of shining brightly under the sun.

But it was too grand and embarrassing to say that to her, so Damian pointed to an empty bench nearby.

“Lilliana, there’s an empty seat over…”

Lilliana, who had been right beside him, was suddenly gone. Damian looked around, wondering if she had been swept away by the crowd, and saw her walking towards a churro stand as if in a trance.

When he approached, she had already ordered both original and chocolate flavors from the vendor.

“Can you eat two bags by yourself?”

Damian didn’t have a sweet tooth and had been giving all the desserts to Lilliana, so she knew that. Ordering two bags of churros meant Lilliana would have to eat them all herself. But Lilliana looked at him as if he had asked the most obvious question.

“Desserts are meant to be enjoyed endlessly. And painting burns a lot of calories.”

Damian wondered for a moment if all women were like this or if Lilliana was special. Lilliana held the two bags of churros and walked towards an empty bench.
