Chapter 30: Chapter 29: Fire and Thunder
"Volcanic Poison Wolf!" Chloe bellowed. "Let that girl go, or I would wipe your whole clan from the face of the realm!"
Actually, Chloe spoke that with all her authority. With such authority as the niece of Harold Carter, the most respected commander of the national army, Chloe was already used to fighting demons. After many long years of harsh training and unnumbered battles, she had grown into a decent mage wielding three elemental systems—thunder, water, and wind.
The wolf sneered at her, those sharp teeth glistening. It did not seem too impressed by her threats. Instead, it gripped the girl tighter and gave a low growl. And for the next moment, it castrated a venomous rain down toward the station with a violent shake of its fiery mane.
"Damn it!" Chloe cursed, her water constellation exploding alive.
"Aqua Shield: Aegis of the Sky!" she shouted, her voice booming across the murk.
A dome of shimmering water materialized above Snowpeak Mountain Station, intercepting the venomous droplets before they could make contact. The wolf, quite unimpressed, growled again and turned to flee into the depths of the Nanling Mountains.
Chloe clenched her fists; she wanted to chase it down and put an end to this terror, though it was for the protection of the station she would keep the shield up until the rain stopped.
Luke saw it from where he was in the forest; he watched it mildly curious. The Volcanic Poison Wolf shot him brief glances as it slipped away, as if memorizing his face for some future vengeful action.
"Come when you are ready to die," muttered Luke under his breath.
Though calm outwardly, Luke felt something strange creeping into his trails of thoughts. The attack on Snowpeak Mountain Station just did not fit. Hundreds of Slave-Level Inferno Wolves, not less than a hundred General-Level Inferno Wolves, together with at least one Mid-Level Volcanic Poison Wolf went out for the mountain station. The damage they caused was not even extensive-a few hundred casualties and a few burning structures. If that was indeed the goal? Unless the attack on the station was merely a diversion, Luke could not grasp what the Inferno Wolf Clan hoped to achieve.
"Hey!" an angry voice interrupted his thoughts.
He glanced upwards toward Chloe Carter storming toward him in midair, the expression on her face twining up together in a fit of anger and sheer frustration. Her wings beat furiously in the gale.
"Why didn't you help?" she yelled at him, her eyes flaring. "You just stood by and watched! People could die, you coward!"
Luke regarded Chloe sideways with a dark expression. This wasn't one to take insults lightly. Certainly, the person waving his hand before him had no conception of what he was worth.
"A coward?" Luke repeated, with dangerously calm voice. He stepped toward Chloe and fixed his piercing gaze upon her. Before she could regain her senses, his hand shot out, making her stagger with it.
The explosive noise echoed through the clearing.
"Who do you think you are hitting me?" exclaimed Chloe, rubbing her cheek in fury. Her wind wings fluttered as they shrank from four to two.
Luke's expression did not change. "Listen, Princess," he said coldly, "you will never call me a coward. You don't know anything about me."
Anger shot through Chloe like a lightning bolt. "You hit me?" she said, violently raising her hands. "I'll have your blood for that, you bastard!"
And before Luke could react, Chloe cast her spell.
"Cloudbreaker: Thunderstorm Surge!" she yelled with righteous fury.
The sky turned dark as the spell summoned what could only be described as a massive storm. Lightning rained down furiously upon the land, rumbling along the very earth. The onslaught of Chloe's attack was relentless till she targeted Luke.
"Is this all you can do?" Luke said with a smirk.
He casually raised one hand, his fiery red constellation suddenly coming to life.
"Hellfire Meteor!"
There hung a gigantic flaming boulder in the air, nearly a hundred meters in diameter. The fierce heat of the meteor turned up Chloe's storm clouds and wiped out her offense. It opened her eyes as she continued to look, absolutely puzzled, at the spectacle in front of her. Whatever had happened to her magic, it was dispelled before the overwhelming effect of Luke's spell.
"What... what is this?" she asked after taking several breaths, bewildered.
The meteor hung in the sky in all its ominous glory, illuminating the clearing with an eerie light. Then Luke waved his wrist, and the boulder flew away, shattering into a thousand pieces.
With immense heat still radiating off it, one of the core shards shot straight toward Chloe.
