Chapter 27: Chapter 26: Expanding the Circle
That caution seemed wholly crazed, especially considering the territorial mentality of demon wolves. Luke was by now curious, for there came a nagging instinct that warned him something was amiss.
That evening Tanya walked up to Luke with her hand resting maternally on her big belly, with Zoe trailing closely with weariness and excitement written all over her.
"Luke," Tanya said, her voice ringing with playful sarcasm. "Zoe is already six months along, and I'm five months along. At this rate, we'll soon be unable to keep up with your sessions. We want you to go and find another partner."
Luke blinked a little in disbelief, then let a chuckle escape from his lips. "Another partner? And here I thought both of you loved our study sessions!"
Zoe flushed furiously, while Tanya cast her eyes to the floor. "Don't flatter yourself, we are just being pragmatic."
Lately, Luke had given little thought to that issue; there had not been many days when he demanded that the woman fit into the system's criteria. Luke was stomping his feet from the preparations to clash with the Inferno Wolf Clan and also from the progress his tribe was making.
But when Tanya Reed broached the subject, Luke realized it was about time he probably should think about increasing his circle soon.
He stepped out of the cave, his keen eyes scanning over the stretch of valley. His gaze came to an anchor on Raven, now the full Flame Hell Demon Wolf, sprawled at the entrance. He radiated so strong a vibe of authority that even the tang of experienced hunters would think twice before coming closer.
Training alongside Raven were the demon wolf soldiers, laboring tirelessly for Zach's exacting supervision. Luke felt confident the troops-a commander-level demon and ten thousand dutiful wolves-would be able to deter the Inferno Wolf Clan for some time.
Luke began with an unusual seriousness: "Zach, I have some work in the field. I will be absent for two days. Please relay to me any information if the Inferno Wolf Clan pops up."
Zach frowned and stood rigid. "But you are leaving? You know the risks."
"I trust you to see them through," Luke pronounced and withdrew a sleek red cell phone. "This is Tanya's old one. Just add me to your list and keep me updated."
With a welcomed beep, they were connected. Then he turned his attention to Raven. The huge wolf sprang to his side and affectionately rubbed his head against Luke's arm.
"I'm counting on you, big guy," Luke said softly, petting Raven's fierce coat. "Protect our people."
Raven let out a long, rumbling growl, gazing at Luke with understanding clear in his amber eyes.
Luke began his way to Snowpeak Station, where he'd recently seen military helicopters land. Whoever had landed at the station was important—perhaps even someone who met the system's specific requirements.
For the journey, Luke turned into his human form. Though his demonic form was strong, it drew too much attention. As he passed through the thick woods of the Nanling Mountains, his mind drifted.
Having just evolved into Lone Star Wolf, Luke was amused at this odd phenomenon. Four luminous galaxies radiating from his spiritual world now floated, each one representing each of Luke's elemental attributes: fire, wind, dark curse, and spatial manipulation. In contrast with human mages, who often found connecting their stars difficult, Luke found it an easy task to manipulate his galaxies anyhow.
Moreover, his stars were bigger and stronger than those of an average mage, giving him a huge power boost.
"I guess that means I'm basically a high-level mage in human terms," Luke mused. "Not too shabby for a cover if I need to blend in. And being a genius mage might even prove helpful in... other matters." A sly grin played upon his lips.
