Chapter 66: The Secret Beneath the Cliff
After demonstrating his impressive skills, Mo Yu easily integrated into the temporary mercenary group.
The group quietly made its way through the dense forest, each member keeping a vigilant eye on the dark areas between the trees, hands tightly gripping their weapons, ready to respond to any sudden threats.
Although it was the first time these seasoned mercenaries had worked together, their years of experience in the Magical Beast Mountain Range allowed them to quickly establish a basic level of coordination. With just a glance, they could communicate signals indicating danger or safety.
Despite this being Mo Yu's first time acting as a mercenary in either of his lives, his alertness and ability to cooperate were on par with the veterans.
Mo Yu's performance surprised the other mercenaries. They had expected someone with such natural talent to be out of touch with reality, but instead, he was as seasoned as any old hand.
Mo Yu glanced back at the herb-gathering team from the Ten Thousand Herbs Pavilion, who were heavily guarded at the rear of the group. His gaze lingered on the Little Fairy Doctor, who was accompanied by a handsome young man.
However, it was clear that the Little Fairy Doctor wasn't too keen on the young man's enthusiasm.
Squinting slightly, Mo Yu's gaze landed on the emblem on the young man's chest. The badge depicted a one-eyed wolf's head. Judging by the way the others flattered him, it was clear that this young man was Mu Li, the deputy leader of the Wolf Head Mercenary Group.
Looking past the young man, Mo Yu noticed the thirty or so mercenaries wearing the same badge. He realized that these were members of the Wolf Head Mercenary Group, one of the three major mercenary groups in Qing Shan Town.
Compared to the makeshift team Mo Yu was part of, the Wolf Head Mercenary Group was obviously better trained and more trusted by the Ten Thousand Herbs Pavilion.
Outside the Magical Beast Mountain Range, everything was relatively calm. But as soon as the group entered the mountains, they were repeatedly attacked by magical beasts.
In just a few kilometers, they encountered three waves of magical beast attacks. Fortunately, the group was large and managed to fend off the beasts, though several mercenaries were lightly injured.
During these skirmishes, Mo Yu displayed his extraordinary skills. Ordinary first-tier magical beasts stood no chance against him.
As a result, Mo Yu quickly gained the recognition of the other mercenaries in the temporary group, though he didn't seem to care much about it.
"Everyone, we're close to the herb-gathering area. Let's take a break. We've been walking for a while, and I'm sure everyone's tired," the Little Fairy Doctor's gentle voice suddenly rang out, breaking the silence.
At her words, the entire group stopped simultaneously.
After a brief discussion, some mercenaries spread out to keep watch, while the others sat down to rest and recover their energy.
Mo Yu, who hadn't expended much Dou Qi during the journey, was in good condition. However, when he noticed the Little Fairy Doctor slip away, he raised an eyebrow and told the mercenary next to him that he needed to relieve himself. Then, he quietly followed her into a small forest.
As he ventured deeper into the forest, where the light was dimmer, Mo Yu noticed faint traces of someone's passage on the ground. A smile curved his lips.
As he continued deeper into the forest, he came upon a steep cliff. Below the cliff was a lush green forest, quite beautiful.
Seeing the cliff, Mo Yu paused, then seemed to realize something and stroked his chin.
As he scanned the cliff's edge, his eyes suddenly locked onto a pale white flower with red fruit growing nearby.
Mo Yu raised an eyebrow and walked over to the plant.
As he approached, a delicate hand suddenly reached out and plucked the flower.
Mo Yu wasn't surprised by the sudden appearance of the hand. He took another step forward.
As Mo Yu drew closer, a face with an ethereal beauty and a hint of panic appeared from below the cliff, gazing up at the calm young man standing above.
"Need a hand?" Mo Yu asked with a faint smile, looking down at the Little Fairy Doctor, who was hanging off the cliff.
"Could you...could you pull me up?" The Little Fairy Doctor's voice was soft as she looked up at Mo Yu, feeling as if he could see right through her.
Mo Yu nodded and grabbed her outstretched hand. With a gentle pull, she leaped up from below the cliff, her graceful figure drawing a beautiful arc in the air before landing lightly on the cliff top.
"Thank you," she said softly, quickly withdrawing her hand from Mo Yu's grasp. Her eyes discreetly scanned the edge of the cliff.
Brushing a strand of hair from her forehead, she glanced at Mo Yu's face. When she saw his handsome features, something seemed to click in her mind. "You're one of the mercenaries hired by the Ten Thousand Herbs Pavilion, aren't you?"
Noting her fleeting glance at the cliff, Mo Yu smiled slightly. It seemed that the saying on the Dou Qi Continent was true: when you fall off a cliff, don't panic—your path to greatness might be right in front of you.
"Yes," Mo Yu replied casually as he looked at the woman before him.
Although the Little Fairy Doctor wasn't stunningly beautiful, her gentle aura was certainly appealing.
Seeing that Mo Yu had no intention of leaving and was still standing nearby, the Little Fairy Doctor frowned slightly. Her dark eyes shifted, and she smiled as she pointed to the white plant near the cliff's edge. "You seem interested in this herb. Do you recognize it?"
"It's a White Orchid Fruit, a mid-level herb worth about four thousand gold coins," Mo Yu replied indifferently.
Surprised by the young man's quick identification and valuation of the herb, the Little Fairy Doctor's eyes widened slightly. "You've studied herbalism?"
"I know a thing or two," Mo Yu shrugged.
Although he was primarily a blacksmith, he had some knowledge of alchemy, even if it wasn't as extensive as his smithing skills.
Seeing Mo Yu's nonchalant attitude, the Little Fairy Doctor didn't press further. She took out the White Orchid Fruit and said, "You helped me out, so consider this White Orchid Fruit a token of my thanks."
Mo Yu shook his head lightly. "A gentleman doesn't take what others love. This White Orchid Fruit suits you better."
The Little Fairy Doctor was momentarily stunned, then she gazed at Mo Yu with increased appreciation. Her voice softened. "Thank you."
After a moment, seeing that Mo Yu still hadn't left, the Little Fairy Doctor glanced at the cliff, her expression conflicted. Finally, she spoke gently, "The others have probably finished resting by now. We should head back."
Unexpectedly, Mo Yu remained still after she spoke.
Noticing that the Little Fairy Doctor seemed eager to get rid of him, Mo Yu's lips curled into a faint smile. His handsome face, illuminated by the dim moonlight, had an almost otherworldly charm.
Mo Yu looked at the Little Fairy Doctor, then turned his gaze to the bottom of the cliff and said something that left the girl shocked.
"If I'm not mistaken, there's a secret hidden at the bottom of this cliff."
