Chapter 58: Inquiring About the Father's Murder
After resolving Xiao Yan's request for leave, most of the matters inside the tent were also settled.
"Alright, that concludes the admissions for today. We'll continue recruiting for the next seven days in the city," Instructor Ruolin said gently.
"Instructor, why not stay with us at the Xiao family during your time in Wu Tan City?" Xiao Yu quickly ran up to Instructor Ruolin, who was about to turn and leave, and grabbed her arm with a sweet smile.
"Stay with the Xiao family?"
Instructor Ruolin paused, her brows furrowing slightly as she hesitated. "The Canaan Academy has a designated reception area here in Wu Tan City. Wouldn't staying at the Xiao family be a bit of a disturbance?"
"Hehe, it's no trouble at all. Having a distinguished instructor from Canaan Academy stay with us would be a great honor for the Xiao family. I'm sure everyone would be thrilled to know that you've accepted our invitation," Xiao Yan said with a smile as he slowly walked forward.
Mo Yu, although silent, looked at Instructor Ruolin, his gaze conveying the same intent.
Mo Yu immediately saw through Xiao Yu and Xiao Yan's intention to use Canaan Academy's prestige to elevate the Xiao family's status. Naturally, he supported this idea. After all, Canaan Academy was a highly respected power in the Northwest Continent, and forming ties with them would undoubtedly enhance the Xiao family's influence in Wu Tan City.
The Xiao family had been kind to Mo Yu, and now that his grandfather was living with them, he hoped to see the family flourish.
Seeing both Mo Yu and Xiao Yan in agreement, Instructor Ruolin pursed her red lips. With her experience, she fully understood the kind of influence her presence would have in Wu Tan City. Typically, admissions instructors didn't get involved with the local powers in the city.
After a moment of contemplation, she nodded lightly and smiled. "Alright, I'll stay with the Xiao family for a few days."
Instructor Ruolin carefully considered the opinions of Xiao Yan and Mo Yu, both of whom were rare geniuses in the past century at Canaan Academy.
Seeing her agree, Xiao Yu immediately beamed with joy and hugged Instructor Ruolin's slender waist.
"Rob, you and the others return to the reception area. We'll continue here tomorrow. And remember, don't cause any trouble!" Instructor Ruolin affectionately patted Xiao Yu's head before turning to give orders to Rob and the rest of the group in the tent.
"Yes, Instructor."
Rob quickly nodded. His fear of Mo Yu was now deeply ingrained, so he had no intention of returning to the family Mo Yu was associated with.
When word spread that the Canaan Academy admissions instructor had come to the Xiao family, Xiao Zhan and the three elders, who were in the middle of a meeting in the hall, were stunned. A moment later, they stood up, faces filled with joy. After exchanging glances, they hurried out of the hall to greet the distinguished guests with warm smiles, welcoming the elegant group of women at the entrance into the family estate.
After Xiao Yu introduced everyone, the two sides finally became acquainted. When Xiao Zhan learned the purpose of Instructor Ruolin's visit, he didn't hesitate to agree and immediately ordered the preparation of guest rooms in the rear courtyard. His decisive and considerate actions earned much favor from Instructor Ruolin and her team.
With the sudden appearance of several beautiful Canaan Academy students, the Xiao family estate became much livelier.
As night began to fall, the Xiao family, as hosts, provided their guests with the highest level of hospitality. After dinner, while conversations between the two parties remained warm, Mo Yu quietly approached Xiao Zhan to ask him something in private.
"What? You want to ask about your father's death?"
In the Xiao family's rear courtyard, unlike the lively front yard, the atmosphere here was tranquil. However, that tranquility was quickly broken by a voice filled with surprise.
Xiao Zhan, who had been attending to Instructor Ruolin and her group in the main hall, brought Mo Yu to a secluded spot in the rear courtyard after the young man requested to discuss something in private. He was utterly shocked when Mo Yu brought up the topic of his father's death, and his usually composed face turned solemn as a troubled expression took hold.
Seeing Xiao Zhan, usually so dignified, react this way, Mo Yu immediately knew something was off. There had to be some hidden truth. Otherwise, his grandfather wouldn't have kept it from him, and Xiao Zhan's dramatic change in expression made things all the more suspicious.
Before leaving Wu Tan City, Mo Yu had to get to the bottom of this. He owed it to the elderly man who had always looked after him, only to suffer the tragic fate of outliving his own son. If there was a blood feud involved, even if it meant facing a powerful entity like the Yun Lan Sect, or even forces from the Central Plains, Mo Yu would someday seek justice for his family!
"Uncle, I'm grown now. You can't keep hiding this from me forever. I want you to tell me the truth, rather than having me find it out for myself," Mo Yu said, his gaze resolute as he stared at Xiao Zhan, his starry eyes filled with determination.
Seeing this, Xiao Zhan sighed. Looking at the young man before him, he was reminded of his own son, Xiao Yan. Both of them had that same unyielding spirit. Once they made up their minds, they would never give up easily.
Clearly, even if Xiao Zhan remained silent, Mo Yu would find other ways to uncover what happened back then. And if it came to that, Mo Yu might grow distant from his uncle.
"Sigh, this was meant to be kept a family secret. No one was allowed to speak of it, and the elders and I had planned to take it to our graves. Your grandfather didn't tell you for your own good," Xiao Zhan sighed again. He was clearly reluctant to bring up the matter, but as Mo Yu's uncle, he realized that the young man had the right to know the truth.
Mo Yu quietly watched Xiao Zhan. As the clan leader, he undoubtedly knew the details, which was why Mo Yu chose to ask him instead of pressing his grandfather, who had already suffered enough from losing his son.
After a moment of silence, Xiao Zhan frowned as he carefully recalled the events of the past. Then, he slowly began to speak.
"Your father's death is connected to a major family in the northeastern part of the empire."
Mo Yu's eyes immediately flashed with a cold light. "Which family are you talking about?"
"It's your ancestral family—the Mo Clan in Yancheng!"
