Chapter 36: The World He Saw
"Don't tease Mama while I'm gone, got it?" Eren whispered, his voice soft yet laced with unspoken concern. He leaned down, pressing a gentle kiss to her swollen belly, his lips lingering for a moment. A faint smile tugged at the corners of his mouth as he straightened up.
"Ereh... Let me—" Mikasa began, but before she could finish, his finger found its way to her lips, silencing her.
"No way," Eren said playfully, his eyes gleaming with a mix of tenderness and mischief. His finger lightly traced her lips before dropping to brush against her flushed cheeks. "You're already seven months into pregnancy. You think I'll let you run around fighting with my baby in your tummy?"
"But—"
"No buts." His tone softened as his hands found her waist, pulling her closer. His forehead bumped gently against hers, his breath mingling with hers in the intimate proximity.
Her dark eyes glimmered, a mixture of worry and sadness reflecting back at him. "Hey... the last thing I want is for you to get hurt out there. Even if our chances of winning are high, I can't risk it. Not you. Not our baby. Understand?"
Mikasa nodded, her hands coming to rest on his chest, her fingers gripping the fabric of his shirt as though anchoring herself to him.
Eren's lips curled into a reassuring smile, and he leaned in further. Their noses brushed, sending a quiet thrill through both of them, and then their lips collided in a kiss that was both tender and desperate.
Scouts were waiting, but Eren didn't care. Because her lips were soft, warm, and familiar, yet they left him breathless every single time. Every kiss felt like the first, leaving him in a half-lidded haze as his lips moved instinctively against hers.
Mikasa matched him, her own reluctance to pull away mirroring his. She held onto the kiss, savoring the safety he gave her, as if it were the only thing tethering her to a fragile peace amidst the chaos.
When they finally broke apart, both were blushing, their cheeks tinged with crimson as they glanced at each other with shy, almost bashful smiles.
Eren rested his forehead against hers again, whispering, "Take care, sweetheart. And take care of our little one."
Mikasa nodded, her voice caught in her throat, and instead of replying, she wrapped her arms around him, pulling him into a hug once more or for one last time?
....
"ARMINNNNNN!!!" Eren's voice ripped through the chaos, raw and desperate, as if his very soul was being torn apart. His legs buckled beneath him, bringing him to his knees as his trembling hands cradled Armin's burnt and battered body. Wide, tear-stricken eyes fixated on his friend, now clinging to the last threads of life.
"E... Eren... Run... We... We can't win." Armin's voice was barely a whisper, each word a painful struggle.
Eren's teeth clenched so hard his jaw ached, a storm of grief and fury twisting inside him. "Armin..." ,his tears falling freely, landing on Armin's scorched face.
Armin took a long deliberate sigh his eyes shifting from one corpse to another his azure orbs tearing up, as he saw the dead bodies of his comrades, his friends everyone killed by the traitors who slept under the same roof.
Yet admist the chaos Armin's lips curved into a faint, bittersweet smile. "Eren... I entrust... everything to you... My dreams... my life... everything. You'll reach the sea... I know you will... Look at the sea... for me."
Eren's scream pierced the air, a harrowing cry of despair and fury as Armin's body went limp in his arms. His bright, hopeful features were swallowed by death's shadow, leaving Eren staring into a void darker than any night.
"Kill... I'll kill you all..." Eren growled through clenched teeth, his voice a venomous whisper that quickly erupted into a roar of wrath. Despite his battered body, he rose, shaking with rage as his vision tunneled on one singular goal—revenge.
"BERTHOLTTTTT!!!" Eren roared, launching himself with his gear toward the Colossal Titan, which loomed like a fiery god of destruction.
Its massive form stood against the gate of Shiganshina connecting it to Wall Maria, its colossal hand hurling burning debris at the horses below. The air reeked of smoke and death, and the Beast Titan's boulders rained down mercilessly on the scattered defenders.
Inside the Colossal Titan's nape, Bertholdt's eyes narrowed, already anticipating Eren's reckless charge. He had hardened the nape with impenetrable crystal, rendering blades and even thunder spears useless against the thick layer protecting him.
Bertholdt closed his eyes, his tone cold yet laced with regret as he heard hissing sounds of the ODM gear."I'm sorry for Armin, Eren... but humanity within the walls is meant to die. That's just how it is. And—"
Bertholdt's eyes widened in shock as a shard of steel pierced through his chest, tearing into him with brutal precision from front. "Ugh!!!" he gasped, blood spluttering from his lips. Eren's blade tore deeper, slicing through muscle and bone with merciless fury.
"Who the actual fuck are you to decide who lives and who dies?!" Eren bellowed, his voice trembling with rage as his hand shot out to grip Bertholdt by the neck. The terror in Bertholdt's eyes mirrored his inability to process the nightmare unfolding before him.
Eren didn't stop. With a guttural roar, he ripped Bertholdt out of his Titan's mouth, dragging him out of the massive, steaming carcass like a predator tearing its prey.
"Did he just..." Bertholdt stammered, his voice faltering as the realization struck—Eren had entered the Colossal Titan through its mouth, bypassing the hardened nape altogether.
"You're gonna pay for all the lives you've taken." Eren whispered, his voice laced with venom. His hands were steady as his blades sliced through Bertholdt's limbs with surgical precision.
Without hesitation, Eren delivered a brutal punch mid-air. The strike twisted Bertholdt's neck at an unnatural angle, sending him hurtling onto the crumbling surface of Wall Maria.
Eren landed beside him with a heavy thud, his shoulders heaving. His wide eyes roamed the battlefield, taking in the carnage.
One by one, his gaze fell on the lifeless bodies of his comrades: Jean, Connie, Ymir, Sasha, Samuel, Daz, Mina, Thomas, Marco... names he knew, faces he cherished, now reduced to still, bloodied forms. His broken ribs throbbed—a painful reminder of his futile attempt to save Jean from the Armored Titan's devastating strike.
In the distance, Eren's eyes locked on the towering form of the Armored Titan, its hardened body regenerating as it advanced toward Wall Maria with mechanical determination.
Beyond the wall, he saw Erwin leading the remnants of the scouts in a desperate, suicidal charge against the Beast Titan, its monstrous form hurling boulders with unrelenting force.
Levi darted across the battlefield, a blur of precision and fury, carving his way toward the Beast Titan through mindless behemoths. But what caught Eren's attention next made his blood run cold. Standing beside the Beast Titan was another towering figure and a small titan— both were not abnormals, but something far more sinister.
Eren's teeth clenched, and his fists tightened around the hilt of his blades. His voice dropped to a low mutter. "Make their sacrifices count Levi..." he whispered, his heart pounding with the desperate hope that his captain could eliminate all the enemies before it was too late.
With a deliberate breath, Eren shifted his focus back to Bertholdt, whose broken body lay before him, writhing in barely-conscious agony. With calculated precision, Eren drove his blades through Bertholdt's body, pinning him to the ground. The steel glinted as blood seeped around it.
"You're staying alive," Eren hissed, his voice cold as steel. If even one scout can make it through this hell, he'll use him.
He stood, blood dripping from his trembling hands. "You'll pay for everything Historia. We dedicated our souls to you, you traitor." Eren muttered, steadying himself.
To his right, four thunder spears gleamed ominously, strapped to his sword handles with about a dozen placed in the bag. Suddenly out of nowhere the echo of footsteps pierced through his ears. Eren's eyes shifted at the source where Reiner in his Titan form stood, battered but determined, his armor cracked and his breath labored.
"Come, Eren! Let's end this once and for all!"
