Chapter 10: Chapter 10: Golden Apple
As Steven returned to his room, the smile on his face quickly froze.
It wasn't due to any unexpected event; rather, it was because he had casually picked up the black bread the village chief had sent, took a bite, and nearly lost a tooth.
This thing wouldn't even be considered a game brick; in all his life, aside from the French military-grade baguette that lived in various jokes, he had never seen anything as hard.
He used the Netherite Sword at his waist to cut off a corner from the bread.
From the cross-section, it was evident that this thing was not a simple mix of wheat flour and bran; it was more like a conglomerate of wood chips with a bit of wheat bran added.
It was hard to imagine that the people in this village might be surviving on this kind of substance every day.
Putting the corner into his mouth, Steven carefully savored the first specialty dish he had eaten in this world.
Aside from being a bit hard on the teeth, it didn't taste too bad; at least, it was much better than the taste of rotten flesh he had experienced before.
When it came to food, Steven never wasted even a bit. It was his habit and a sign of respect for food.
However, he had no intention of eating the rest.
Perhaps he could give it to the villagers outside; they would probably be happy to have a hearty meal.
Of course, giving it to someone like Gladiia was out of the question.
Bullying someone with a mental disability was sure to bring consequences.
While Steven was contemplating Gladiia, the girl who should have been quietly lying on the bed suddenly sat up.
Their eyes met, and Steven thought she might have remembered something.
However, the vacant, unsparkling eyes quickly dispelled that possibility.
What was she planning?
Before Steven could figure out the answer, the girl sitting on the bed suddenly spewed a large amount of blood toward him.
Caught off guard, with blood splattered on his face, Steven looked down at his clothes soaked in blood and sighed helplessly.
Well, this set of clothes was officially retired.
More concerning than the clothes, though, was the girl who had spat out a large mouthful of blood.
Judging by her pale face, it seemed unlikely that the internal injuries he had accidentally caused earlier were the cause.
After all, he had hit her head, not her chest or abdomen.
Steven vividly remembered that collision.
In other words, before that incident, this girl might have already been injured. This could explain why those monster-like creatures dared to pursue her.
Of course, he couldn't be sure whether the subsequent actions of the righteous manor aggravated the girl's injuries.
Thinking about wiping the blood off his face, for some reason, the blood seemed to absorb into his skin like an easily absorbable face cream.
Fortunately, Steven didn't see any strange debuffs in the status bar, so he didn't pay it much attention.
Supporting the girl, who had awakened and reached out to him like a child yearning for a father's embrace, Steven quickly deduced from her complexion that her current physical condition was not optimistic.
"In consideration of you calling me 'Dad,' I won't hold it against you. Meeting me is your good fortune, considering your luck."
Once again rummaging through his backpack, Steven found something usable this time. Smiling at the girl, he spoke, "Dada?"
Seemingly having regressed to the point of only uttering this term, Gladiia, holding onto Steven's arm, despite being so weak that she could barely speak, still called out to him with a soft voice, resembling that of a sick child.
"Yes, yes, Daddy is here. Be good, open your mouth for medicine."
Helplessly accepting the role of an unexpected father, Steven took out a shining golden apple from his backpack and, in a tone resembling that of coaxing a child, said to the girl curled up in his arms, "If it weren't for the fact that I caused this, I wouldn't be so readily taking out the golden apple. This thing is worth half a life, even if it's not enchanted, the cost is definitely not low. I usually can't bear to take a bite."
The girl, with amnesia, looked at Steven and then at the golden apple in his hand. Her crimson eyes blinked, revealing a hint of confusion and bewilderment.
"Well, I overestimated your current comprehension abilities."
Shaking his head, Steven could only press the golden apple against the girl's tender and pink, almost frozen-like lips. He then mimicked a biting motion himself.
Seeing Steven demonstrate, the girl finally understood what he wanted her to do. Her vermilion lips gently opened, and her shell-like teeth pressed against the skin of the apple.
Clang!
A crisp sound echoed. The girl covered her mouth, and although there was still an instinctive closeness to Steven in her eyes, it couldn't hide the slight resentment from being teased.
Meanwhile, Steven looked at the golden apple in his hand, now marked with a small tooth imprint, and didn't know how to comment on the current situation.
This thing was truly made of pure gold; why was it so authentic in this aspect?
Thinking that he usually bit into this thing without a second thought, Steven suddenly felt that if he died one day, it would probably be from heavy metal poisoning.
However, the more pressing issue now was that the girl in his arms looked like she was about to pass away. He had the medicine that could save her, but she couldn't eat it.
Steven seriously doubted that if he let Gladiia eat the golden apple directly, even if the medicinal effect worked, her life would definitely be tortured out of her.
"Ah, can it only be done this way now?"
Helplessly sighing, Steven used one hand to hold Gladiia's weak chin against his chest and carefully examined the perfect little face of the girl.
The more he looked, the more beautiful she seemed.
"In a sense, this is better for me."
Muttering words that Gladiia, in her current state, couldn't understand, Steven picked up the golden apple and started to nibble on it.
Crushing it in three or five bites, Steven felt the fragments turn into a hot stream in his mouth, rapidly flowing into his body.
Before it completely disappeared, Steven bent down, allowing his mouth to come into close contact with the girl's tender lips. He passed the remnants of the hot stream from his mouth to hers.
A golden apple for a kiss with this beautiful girl shouldn't be considered too much of a loss, right?
