Arcane Sovereign: Reborn as the Master of Magic

Chapter 15: Chapter 15: Shadows Within

The morning after the battle was marked by an uneasy calm. Though the defenders of Hogwarts had triumphed, the toll of their victory lingered. Injured students filled the infirmary, and whispers of spies within their ranks began to spread like wildfire.

Kai Thornwood sat in the war room, a map of the castle spread before him. He traced his fingers over potential weak points in the castle's wards, his mind racing. The enemy had struck with precision, exploiting vulnerabilities they shouldn't have known about.

"We've got a rat," Theo declared, leaning back in his chair. His usual air of casual detachment was replaced by a steely seriousness.

"Spies?" Hermione asked, her brow furrowing. "Are you certain?"

Daphne nodded. "The attack on the Forbidden Forest wasn't random. Voldemort knew where to hit us. Someone's feeding him information."

The room fell silent. Everyone exchanged uneasy glances, the weight of the accusation sinking in.

"Then we find them," Harry said, his voice hard. "And we make sure they can't betray us again."

The Hunt for the Traitor

Kai called a meeting of the Council of Houses, choosing his words carefully as he addressed the gathered students.

"Someone within these walls is working against us," he said, his voice calm but firm. "I don't say this to sow distrust, but to ensure our survival. From now on, we'll operate in cells—small, independent groups with limited knowledge of the larger plan. Only the Council will have full oversight."

"What if the traitor's on the Council?" Blaise asked, his tone sharp.

Kai's eyes locked onto Blaise's, unflinching. "Then we'll uncover them too. No one is above suspicion."

As the room murmured in uneasy agreement, Hermione leaned closer to Kai. "Do you really think this will work?"

"It has to," Kai replied. "But we'll need to be smarter than Voldemort's agents."

Daphne stepped forward, her gaze sweeping the room. "And ruthless. We can't afford mercy if we find the traitor."

The grim resolve in her voice sent a chill through the room, but no one dared argue.

Rebuilding the Defenses

Over the next few days, Hogwarts transformed into a fortress. The nobles used their family artifacts to enhance the wards, layering them with protections that hadn't been used in centuries. The Ravenclaws deciphered ancient texts from the Archive, crafting new spells to bolster their defenses.

Meanwhile, Kai worked with Hermione and Daphne to implement a sophisticated surveillance system. Enchanted mirrors were placed throughout the castle, each one linked to a central monitoring station in the Room of Requirement.

"Paranoid much?" Blaise quipped as they tested the system.

"Vigilant," Kai corrected. "There's a difference."

But vigilance wasn't enough to calm Kai's nerves. The system hadn't issued any new quests since the trial in the Archive, and its silence unnerved him.

A New Ally

On the third night after the battle, Kai received an unexpected summons. The House Elves appeared in his quarters, their large eyes filled with urgency.

"Master Thornwood," one of them squeaked. "You must come to the kitchens. There is... someone who wishes to speak with you."

Kai frowned but followed the elf without hesitation. When he entered the kitchens, he found a tall figure cloaked in shadow waiting for him. The figure's hood fell back, revealing a face Kai hadn't seen in years—Regulus Black.

"You're supposed to be dead," Kai said, his wand raised.

Regulus smirked. "I could say the same about you, Thornwood."

Kai's eyes narrowed. "What do you want?"

"I'm here to help," Regulus said, his tone sincere. "Voldemort doesn't know I survived, and I intend to keep it that way. But I've been watching his movements, and I know his next target."

"Why should I trust you?" Kai asked.

Regulus stepped closer, his expression grim. "Because if you don't, Hogwarts will fall."

---

The Coming Storm

Regulus revealed that Voldemort had mobilized an army larger than anyone anticipated. Giants, werewolves, and mercenaries had joined his ranks, and he planned to strike Hogwarts within the week.

"There's more," Regulus added. "He's sending a Death Eater to assassinate you personally."

Kai raised an eyebrow. "Just me? Seems inefficient."

Regulus's gaze hardened. "You're the one threat he doesn't fully understand. He doesn't take chances."

Kai's mind raced. An assassination attempt meant Voldemort considered him a priority. It also meant the castle had even less time to prepare.

"Then we need to hit him first," Kai said, his voice cold. "Before he can bring the fight to us."

---

The First Strike

Kai gathered his core team that night, explaining Regulus's information. Though there was skepticism, especially from Harry, the group ultimately agreed on a preemptive strike.

Their target: a Death Eater outpost near Hogsmeade, where Voldemort's forces were amassing supplies.

The mission was simple—destroy the outpost and disrupt the enemy's supply chain. But as the group prepared to leave, Kai couldn't shake the feeling that the enemy was already one step ahead.

---

The Ambush

The attack began smoothly. Kai, Harry, and Theo led the charge, their spells tearing through the Death Eater defenses. Blaise and Daphne covered their flanks, while Hermione coordinated from a safe vantage point.

But as they reached the heart of the outpost, a cold voice echoed through the air.

"Did you really think I wouldn't see this coming?"

A figure emerged from the shadows—Bellatrix Lestrange. Her wild eyes glinted with madness as she raised her wand.

Kai's heart sank. "It's a trap. Fall back!"

But before they could retreat, the ground beneath them erupted. Dozens of masked Death Eaters surrounded them, their wands trained on the group.

---

Kai's Sacrifice

The fight was chaotic and brutal. Spells flew in every direction, illuminating the battlefield with flashes of light. Despite their best efforts, the group was outnumbered and outmaneuvered.

Bellatrix cackled as she advanced on Harry, her wand crackling with energy. "The Boy Who Lived... let's see how long you last."

Kai didn't hesitate. He stepped in front of Harry, deflecting Bellatrix's curse with a shield spell. "Not today, Lestrange."

Bellatrix sneered. "So, you're Thornwood. Let's see if you're as powerful as they say."

The duel that followed was fierce. Kai's new abilities gave him an edge, but Bellatrix's cunning and experience made her a formidable opponent. Finally, Kai saw an opening.

"Dimensional Rift: Oblivion Strike!" he shouted.

A surge of energy erupted from his wand, engulfing Bellatrix in a vortex of darkness. She screamed as the spell consumed her, forcing her to retreat with the remaining Death Eaters.

As the dust settled, the group regrouped, battered but alive.

---

The Cost of War

Though the mission had succeeded, the ambush was a stark reminder of the stakes they faced. Kai stared at the burning remains of the outpost, his expression unreadable.

"This is just the beginning," he said quietly.

Daphne placed a hand on his shoulder. "We'll be ready for whatever comes next."

Kai nodded, but the weight of responsibility pressed heavily on him. Voldemort's war was escalating, and the battle for Hogwarts was far from over.
