Chapter 9: Break

10 PM

"Rono, I'm going to transform."

"No, Chris, you'll hurt yourself!"

"I have no choice. If I don't, we'll both get hurt."

"Alright then, let's just aim for fifth place."

"But we're close to entering the next world; we just need to get at least third place!"

"We can try again. It's not a big deal."

Moments later, they stopped playing, both sweating profusely.

"Man, this game burns so many calories," Chris said, breathing heavily.

"We almost got burned ourselves, not just the calories," Rono said as he lay on the bed.

"I'm excited to play GTM 7. I can't imagine how realistic it will be," Chris said.

"The trailer didn't show any in-game footage, but they said it will have 99% immersion," Rono replied.

"The difference is huge! GTM 5's immersion was only 3%, and GTM 6 was 6%. Look at the massive difference between them!" Chris said in amazement.

"Let's check the school page and the class group chat to see if there's any news," Rono suggested.

FeetNote App | Class Chat: 22 people active.

Hanna: "Tomorrow is another holiday."

Emma: "Well, that's good."

Mike: "At least we'll get a break from him for a bit."

Class Chat: 24 people active, Chris and Rono joined the chat.

Chris: "Is it true that Mr. Lewis won't come tomorrow?"

Mike: "That's what we were just talking about. Didn't you see?"

Eleanor: "They tried calling him, but he didn't answer. They went to his house to check, but he wasn't there."

Mike: "Maybe he joined a swimming challenge with Morty and drowned in the lake. Hahaha!"

Mike: "Or maybe Morty ate him! Did you see how he looked this morning? He looked like a zombie! Hahaha!"

Eleanor: "....."

Chris: "...."

Rono: "...."

Eleanor left the chat.

Chris and Rono left the chat.

20 people active... 15 people active... 3 people active... 1 person active.

Mike: "...."

After Eleanor left the conversation, she stood by the window, wearing pink pajamas with her long brown hair.

Her room overlooked the lake, and there wasn't much distance between them.

The sky was clear, with some scattered clouds here and there.

As she looked at the lake, she felt a chill coming from it.

After staring at it for a moment, she lowered the curtains and went back to her bed.

"Where did that man go?" Eleanor thought as she tried to sleep.

...

3 AM.

Morty opened his eyes, sweating. He had slept for almost 18 hours.

He dragged himself to the bathroom to shower and freshen up.

After showering and dressing, he felt refreshed, though his legs were still shaking a little. He was hungry.

He went downstairs to the kitchen to prepare something to eat.

The lights were dim.

Morty opened the fridge, took out four eggs and some cheese.

He heated the pan and carefully cracked the eggs into it, then added the shredded cheese and salt.

He prepared some bread and warmed it up, then poured a glass of lemonade and placed everything on the table.

He put the eggs on a plate, sat at the table, and started eating.

He took the first bite of bread with eggs and cheese and was about to sip the cold lemonade to refresh himself.

But he saw a fly floating on top of the juice.

He poured the juice down the sink, changed the glass, and poured a fresh one.

While eating, he saw another fly dove into the lemonade, almost as if it was insisting that Morty taste the flavor of flies, since you're also a "fly human."

"Again, ugh!" He gritted his teeth and poured the glass into the sink.

He grabbed the glass bottle of lemonade and started drinking directly from it, closing it after every sip.

After finishing his meal, he wiped the table, washed the dishes, and put the lemonade bottle back in the fridge.

As Morty left the kitchen, in the fridge, inside the lemonade bottle he had drunk from, there were two dead flies swimming calmly.

Morty climbed the stairs and reached his parents' room. He opened the door gently.

They were covered with a white blanket, deep in sleep.

He closed the door and went to his younger brother's room. He tried to open the door but found it locked.

Morty sighed and went back to his room. He put on his warm black winter clothes and went down to the garage.

He took his car and drove off.

The clouds in the sky thickened, signaling rain.

The streets were bright and empty, though you could find a shop open on every street.

Morty closed the windows, turned on the car heater, and drove around the city.

He played some music.

' Why am I not free? '

' Why is everyone against me? '

' Why is everyone using me? '

' I'm tired of this torment. '

' I've thought about ending my life. '

' But then I thought this is what they want. '

' They do things no one blames them for. '

' And when I do the same things, they blame me. '

' They say I'm crazy and need to be in prison. '

' Because I'm weak, they're right. '

' Because I'm scared, they're right. '

' Because I can't protect myself, they're right. '

' They're always right as long as I'm weak. '
