Chapter 32: What Kind of Relationship Do You Think We Have?
Chapter 32: What Kind of Relationship Do You Think We Have?
“What do you like?”
The peerlessly beautiful face behind the ethereal veil froze for a moment as she turned to look at Ye Shu.
Her hands unconsciously gripped the hem of her robe, unsure of how to respond.
Luo Jiuyan had devoted over a hundred years to cultivating the Dao, pursuing supreme power. Aside from becoming stronger, she had little to no interest in worldly desires.
What did she like?
This question stumped Luo Jiuyan.
If she were to say she liked becoming stronger, well, she was already the pinnacle of the demonic path, a reigning empress. To grow stronger now would mean challenging the great Golden Immortals of the heavens.
But if she didn’t mention strength, then Luo Jiuyan truly had nothing else to say.
It was as if she stood alone at the peak of the world, yet her eyes were filled with confusion. She was utterly lost…
“Do you like this?”
Ye Shu spent five coins to buy a stick of candied hawthorn from a street vendor and held it out to her.
Looking at the round, red, and festive candied fruit skewered on a bamboo stick, she hesitated for a moment before coldly snorting,
“This master… would never like something like this!”
Yet, a faint flicker of curiosity stirred within her.
“It’s just a sweet, vulgar snack made from common fruits. What’s so good about it?”
“Eating it would only add impurities to the body, ruin the palate, and increase worldly desires. It’s all harm and no benefit!”
“How could you think this master would like such a thing? How foolish!”
“Uh…” Ye Shu’s hand holding the candied hawthorn trembled slightly.
He hadn’t expected such a fierce scolding just for asking a simple question.
Was Luo Jiuyan truly an unfeeling, ruthless demon who only cared about cutting off heads?
Ye Shu refused to believe it!
Summoning his courage, he took a deep breath and held the candied hawthorn out to Luo Jiuyan again. “Master, I’m offering you this candied hawthorn. Could you do me a favor and try it?”
“You foolish disciple!”
Behind the veil, Luo Jiuyan looked utterly exasperated. As the supreme demon empress of the world, she could eat humans, demons, and ghosts, but there was no way she would ever touch such a mundane sweet snack.
She couldn’t understand what her disciple was thinking, forcing this candied hawthorn on her.
If she really ate it, and word got out, where would she put her face?
Her charming junior sister, her eccentric junior brother, and those hypocritical righteous cultivators would surely laugh their heads off!
“This master will only eat one!”
But unable to withstand the expectant look in her obedient disciple’s eyes, Luo Jiuyan reluctantly took the candied hawthorn, thinking, I really can’t do anything with you.
She gently peeled off the outer layer of paper and looked at the glistening candied fruit, its surface coated with a crystalline layer of sugar.
She swallowed hard.
It probably wouldn’t taste bad, right? It did look somewhat interesting.
After all, she had never eaten anything like this before. Though she had agreed to try it, a trace of reluctance lingered as she held it.
“Master, if you don’t dare to eat it, you can give it back to me.”
Just then, Ye Shu’s voice sounded beside her, and he reached out to take it back.
However, Luo Jiuyan quickly moved it out of his reach and coldly snorted, “Are you looking down on this master?”
“How could this master not dare to eat something like this!”
With that, she impulsively bit into the candied hawthorn. Crack—the top of the fruit was cleanly bitten off by her red lips.
She chewed for a moment, first tasting the sweetness of the sugar coating, followed by the crisp texture, and then the tangy-sweet flavor of the hawthorn.
“Hmm?”
She couldn’t help but let out a soft sound, her beautiful eyes widening as she looked at the candied hawthorn in her hand. It was strangely delightful.
This sweet snack, which seemed like something meant to fool children, actually had a unique flavor. It was both sweet and sour, quite delicious.
“Is it good?” Ye Shu asked, a smile gradually forming on his face as he watched her.
Luo Jiuyan instinctively wanted to say it was delicious, but when she saw Ye Shu’s smug expression, she immediately replied, “It’s… acceptable.”
Ye Shu: “…”
Judging by her surprised expression and the way she subtly took another bite, it didn’t seem like her true opinion.
Was it because of the way I asked?
Thinking this, Ye Shu reached out to take the candied hawthorn back.
“What are you doing?” Luo Jiuyan’s voice carried a soul-piercing sharpness, her gaze fierce. If Ye Shu dared to try taking it again, she might just chop off his hand.
Ye Shu chuckled awkwardly. “Master, if it’s only ‘acceptable,’ then give it back to me. I’d like to try it too.”
Since transmigrating to this world, he had been stuck in the Heavenly Fiend Sect and hadn’t had the chance to explore much. He had no idea what the local snacks and delicacies tasted like.
He wondered if the snacks in this world just weren’t very good, which was why Luo Jiuyan didn’t like them.
So he decided to try it himself.
“No!” Luo Jiuyan flatly refused. She seemed almost afraid that Ye Shu would take it, quickly hiding the candied hawthorn behind her like a mother tiger protecting her cub. Her behavior was quite peculiar.
“Master, didn’t you say it wasn’t good?”
“None of your business!”
“Master, didn’t you say you’d only eat one?”
“Did this master say that?”
“Master…”
Ye Shu sighed, but a faint smile appeared on his face as he watched Luo Jiuyan’s antics.
If it wasn’t good, why wouldn’t she give it back? She’s really putting on a front, isn’t she?
In any case, Ye Shu wasn’t going to risk provoking her further over a stick of candied hawthorn.
It was just a few coins. He could always buy another one.
Just as Ye Shu was about to buy another stick, Luo Jiuyan suddenly reached out and handed him the skewer, which now had only two candied fruits left.
“Here, take it!” she said.
Ye Shu was momentarily stunned and quickly waved his hands in refusal. “Master, you should eat it yourself. I’ll just buy another one.”
“Hmm? Are you sure?”
Luo Jiuyan’s voice carried a chilling undertone, making it feel as if the temperature had dropped into an icy abyss. “Are you rejecting this because it has my saliva on it?”
“What! This is great stuff!” Ye Shu’s eyes lit up in realization that he might have misspoken earlier. He quickly covered his mouth, embarrassed, before accepting the stick from Luo Jiuyan.
With a wide grin, he said, “Of course, I wouldn’t reject you, Master. Everything about you is precious, even your—”
“Shut up!”
Her beautiful face flushed red under the veil, the blush unmistakable even through the thin fabric.
At this moment, Luo Jiuyan wanted nothing more than to slap Ye Shu silly to ease her embarrassment!
How shameless! Saying such things in public, do you think you can get away with anything outside?
Terrified, Ye Shu broke out in a cold sweat. To cover his awkwardness, he quickly bit into one of the candied haws, stuffing his mouth full, and began chewing enthusiastically.
Thinking about how these haws had been tasted by Luo Jiuyan made them seem even sweeter and more delicious to Ye Shu.
“You really don’t mind?” Luo Jiuyan, seeing him enjoy the treat so much, asked with a mix of irritation and curiosity.
Ye Shu laughed heartily. “Master, given our relationship, how could I possibly reject you?”
“Who has that kind of relationship with you?!”
Luo Jiuyan’s face burned with embarrassment at his words. With an indignant pout, she ignored him and walked ahead.
