Actors Career

Chapter 5: The Mask of Iago

The theatre was buzzing with anticipation. The production of Othello was nearing, and Ethan found himself cast as one of Shakespeare's most complex villains: Iago.

In the dim light of his apartment, he paced nervously, clutching the script. Iago wasn't just a villain—he was a master manipulator, a man who spun webs of deceit with chilling ease. This role would push Ethan further than ever before. The Actor's System had guided him through empathy, ambition, and temptation, but this time it wasn't about understanding emotions. It was about weaponizing them.

When the world reformed, Ethan found himself in a grand Venetian courtyard. The air smelled of salt from the nearby sea, and the faint sounds of a distant celebration echoed through the night. He glanced down at his attire—dark, elegant clothes befitting a trusted soldier. A dagger hung at his side.

Ahead of him stood Othello, the Moorish general, and his trusted lieutenant, Cassio. The scene was set. This was the moment when Iago planted the first seeds of doubt in Othello's mind.

"Ah, Iago," Othello greeted, his voice warm. "What news?"

Ethan, fully immersed in the role, bowed slightly. "My lord, I fear I must speak of Cassio. There are… whispers."

Othello frowned. "Whispers?"

"Yes," Ethan continued, carefully choosing his words. "Whispers of your lieutenant's closeness with Desdemona."

Othello's expression darkened. Ethan could see the tension in his jaw, the flicker of suspicion taking root. The challenge was clear: turn a loyal husband into a man consumed by jealousy.

The System's voice echoed in his mind.

Objective Update: Convince Othello without revealing your true intentions.

Ethan stepped closer, lowering his voice to a conspiratorial whisper. "I would not speak of it if I did not care for you, my lord. But… have you not noticed how often Cassio lingers near your wife?"

Othello's brow furrowed. "You mean to say he is unfaithful?"

"Not directly, no," Ethan replied. "But there are signs… little things that one cannot ignore. A hand held too long. A look exchanged when they think no one sees."

The words flowed effortlessly from Ethan's lips, and he felt a chill run through him. He wasn't just playing Iago—he was Iago. The manipulation, the subtle twisting of truth, felt intoxicating.

Othello's suspicion grew, his demeanor shifting. "You speak as a friend, Iago. I trust your judgment."

Ethan felt a flicker of triumph, but it was short-lived. A pang of guilt tugged at his heart. The lines between himself and Iago blurred once more. Could he truly become someone who thrived on deception?

---

The scene continued, growing more intense. Ethan wove a tapestry of lies, each thread tightening around Othello's mind. He could see the anguish in the general's eyes, the creeping doubt that threatened to consume him.

By the time the final line was spoken, Ethan was breathless. The world dissolved around him, leaving him back in his apartment.

The System chimed.

Ethan sighed, rubbing his temples. He had come so far, but the journey was only getting more complicated. Each role demanded more of him—not just as an actor, but as a person.

His phone buzzed with a message from the director.

"Incredible rehearsal today, Ethan. You're becoming one of the finest actors I've ever seen."

Ethan stared at the screen. Was it worth it? The accolades, the applause, the recognition? Or was he losing himself in the process?

As he pondered the question, the voice of Iago whispered in the back of his mind.

"Beware, Ethan. For we all wear masks. The question is… will you ever take yours off?"
