Chapter 51. Puppy Love? The Played-For-A-Fool Kind (4)
Shen Wan watched Ji Meng walk towards the teachers’ office with her test paper. After passing through a corridor, she would likely stop and take out her small mirror to carefully examine herself. Perhaps satisfied that she was still beautiful, Ji Meng would then put the mirror back in her bag and continue on her way with the test paper.
[188: “Wan Wan, your little sister Meng seems a bit too narcissistic, doesn’t she? It’s almost abnormal. I suddenly feel like betting with you that even if you two get together, she’ll still think she’s prettier.”]
“Are you sure?”
Shen Wan’s tone made 188 back down quickly, denying he was serious and claiming it was just a joke. He decided not to bet. No bet meant no harm; he wouldn’t lose anything. Betting carried a 50% risk. After careful consideration, it wasn’t worth it.
Shen Wan stood by the corridor railing, pretending to hold a book as if studying. In reality, she was keeping an eye on the direction Ji Meng had gone.
The math teacher must have been tough to deal with. During Shen Wan’s wait, Ji Meng didn’t return. When the bell rang, she had to go back to class.
188 noticed a detail: his host seemed very attentive to Ji Meng. Compared to the young ladies in previous worlds, the host appeared to have devoted much more attention to Ji Meng in this world.
Could it be that Ji Meng was truly cuter and more adorable, thus more attractive to the host?
Especially now that Shen Wan had given him a task to constantly monitor Ji Meng’s movements. He was to notify her whenever Ji Meng left the classroom, allowing for another “chance” encounter. With these two frequently meeting, walking together, and even going to the bathroom together, no one would believe they didn’t have a special relationship. On the contrary, everyone thought Shen Wan had truly latched onto Ji Meng.
The girls at school who heard about this were utterly disappointed. They observed that apart from excessive and somewhat awkward flattery, Shen Wan hadn’t done anything else. How had she won Ji Meng’s heart to the point where Ji Meng would call for Shen Wan even when going to the bathroom? This had never happened before.
Xu Lanlan couldn’t sit still. “Shen Wan, your relationship with Ji Meng is really good, isn’t it?” Her words carried a hint of sourness. Who wouldn’t be jealous? Every girl at school who knew about this was a mix of envy, jealousy, and complicated emotions.
After all, whoever could please Ji Meng and be truly treated as a friend by her would gain numerous benefits.
Not only were there benefits promised by Mr. Ji, but also various invisible advantages. Being acknowledged by Ji Meng meant never having to struggle in life again.
“How did you make Ji Meng so happy? You eat together in the cafeteria, and now she even calls you to go to the bathroom. I heard she even gives you a ride home after school.”
Shen Wan glanced at the extremely jealous Xu Lanlan and beckoned her over. Xu Lanlan’s heart leaped with joy as she quickly leaned in.
“Actually, I didn’t use any special methods.”
“There must be some method, right?” Xu Lanlan persisted, thinking that if she learned this method, she might gain Ji Meng’s favor too.
Shen Wan whispered, “I really didn’t use any method. I haven’t done anything special to get along with Ji Meng.”
Xu Lanlan had expected to hear some useful technique, but Shen Wan claimed she hadn’t done anything.
Was she trying to fool her?
“I’ve heard that when you sit with Ji Meng, every third sentence is about how beautiful and unparalleled she is,” Xu Lanlan said, somewhat dissatisfied. After all, wasn’t this just being a sycophant? Everyone could see that. She just wanted to know if there were any other methods.
“Isn’t that the truth?” Shen Wan replied matter-of-factly. “Ji Meng is just so adorable that I can’t help but compliment her when I speak. Being friends with someone as beautiful as Ji Meng is truly a blessing from my past life.”
“Come on, I don’t believe you don’t have other motives. Everyone in this school wants to be friends with Ji Meng because of the many benefits. No one expected you to stand out in the end,” Xu Lanlan said, glancing out the window. Shen Wan’s seat was by the window, currently facing Xu Lanlan with her back to it, unaware of what was happening behind her.
Shen Wan smiled and said, “Oh? You’ve figured it out?”
“See? I thought you were different, but you’re just like the rest of us,” Xu Lanlan said triumphantly, not realizing Shen Wan hadn’t finished speaking.
“Ji Meng is such an adorable girl, I honestly don’t know why she’s willing to be friends with me. Although her status is extraordinary and she looks otherworldly, with a charming smile, I think she’s a really good person. In this school, Ji Meng is the girl who treats me the best. My current wish is to stay with her forever, to be lifelong friends, because she’s truly adorable and genuine. She doesn’t look down on me at all. Now she even saves me a seat at lunch. She’s really wonderful, not pretentious at all. No wonder everyone in school wants to be her friend.”
“If you want to be friends with Ji Meng, just interact with her more. Sincerity begets sincerity; she’ll surely be happy to reciprocate.”
Xu Lanlan’s expression twisted. “Is there nothing else besides this?” Her fists clenched her pants as she watched Ji Meng standing outside the window, her face breaking into a smile. She had to admit, as a fellow girl, seeing Ji Meng’s pure and innocent smile made her heart flutter and her mind go blank for a moment.
“Shen Wan.” Ji Meng’s soft voice sounded in Shen Wan’s ear, making her turn around immediately with a radiant smile.
The two girls, similar in height and build, with equally fair and delicate beautiful faces, gazing at each other, looked like a painted scene.
“Going to the bathroom?” Ji Meng asked.
Shen Wan nodded quickly. “Yes, I’ll be right out. Wait for me.”
“Take it slow, don’t trip,” Ji Meng said concernedly, drawing everyone’s attention. Their expressions were shocked. Ji Meng not only invited Shen Wan to the bathroom but also showed concern for her. So Shen Wan was the one who had won her over?
The two girls walked side by side.
Ji Meng stood still, took out her small mirror and looked at herself for a while, then raised her eyes to Shen Wan. “Am I really that good?”
“Mm, very good.”
Ji Meng’s lips curved slightly, her eyes full of mirth. “The best person?”
“Absolutely.”
“The most perfect person?”
“Yes.”
“The most beautiful person?”
“Definitely.”
“Are you happy being my friend?”
Shen Wan smiled. “Of course I’m happy. Because in this school, you’re the only one willing to be my friend. My family background isn’t good; I have nothing to show for myself except my grades. You’ve never looked down on me. Being friends with such a beautiful and cute girl like you feels like a dream come true.”
Ji Meng’s smile never faded. She extended her slender finger and placed it on Shen Wan’s cheek. “You have another good quality—you’re quite good-looking. In this school, you’re the prettiest after me.”
“Remember what you said. Don’t change, okay?” Ji Meng’s smile as she said this to Shen Wan was like a slowly blooming pink petal, absolutely beautiful.
“I’ll remember! I won’t change.”
Ji Meng glanced at Shen Wan’s arm and linked her own through it. “I’ve seen those close friends walking arm in arm to the bathroom. Good friends always walk like this wherever they go.”
“That’s right.”
“I’ve never tried it before. Shall we give it a try?”
“Sure, I’ve never tried it either. I’ve always been very lonely, from childhood until now. Before meeting you, I didn’t have a single friend.”
Ji Meng was silent for a moment, then said, “But now you do, don’t you?”
“That’s why I’m so lucky to have met you.”
Shen Wan replied, and then the two walked to the restroom together, arm in arm, under the shocked gazes of passersby.
Shen Wan thought: “Now we’re walking arm in arm. The next step will be holding hands.”
“A romantic relationship can also start from friendship, right 188?”
(188: He wouldn’t bother answering. Let her play by herself. Whether he spoke or not, the host wouldn’t care anyway. She seemed quite happy talking to herself.)
Fifteen days after officially meeting Ji Meng, during a PE class, the teacher beckoned to Shen Wan, saying someone was looking for her. He pointed to a man in sunglasses and a suit standing at the entrance of the sports field, and reminded her to hurry and not dawdle until class ended.
Shen Wan swallowed. She hadn’t done anything wrong.
188 also came to his senses and carefully recalled that his host had been flirting with Little Meng lately, showering her with flattery every day. He could testify that she really hadn’t done anything bad.
“Excuse me, sunglasses uncle, are you looking for me?”
188 thought Shen Wan was really putting on an act. Although being approached by a stranger was a bit scary, was she an ordinary person? That little fist of hers was quite formidable. Besides, they were at school. Nothing could happen, especially since this person had openly approached her through the teacher.
The man in sunglasses and suit just said quietly, “Mr. Ji wants to see you.”
“Who’s Mr. Ji?”
“Young lady, don’t play dumb. You know very well who Mr. Ji is,” the man in sunglasses and suit said bluntly, exposing Shen Wan’s pretense.
Their meeting place was in an office. At the moment, there were no teachers in the office, only a middle-aged man sitting in a chair. This man looked quite charismatic, but she had no interest in the opposite sex.
“Mr. Ji, you were looking for me?” Shen Wan said with a smile.
Mr. Ji looked up and examined Shen Wan from head to toe before saying, “This is more surprising than I imagined.”
“Mr. Ji, if you have something to say, please be direct,” Shen Wan said with a serious expression. “If you want to separate me from Ji Meng because of my poor family background, that’s impossible.”
188 thought: Don’t get so into character, okay? These few sentences are full of misleading implications. It’s as if you two have some other kind of relationship, when you’re just good friends right now.
“Give it to her.”
Mr. Ji gave a look to the man in sunglasses and suit, and then a check was handed to Shen Wan. She glanced at it and secretly said to 188: “188, that’s a lot of money. If Ji Meng were a scumbag guy, I might agree. But he’s heartlessly trying to separate me from Little Meng. I absolutely won’t be tempted by money.”
“Mr. Ji, even if you give me this much money, which is very tempting, I still won’t leave Ji Meng,” Shen Wan said. As if to demonstrate her determination, she tore up the check in front of Mr. Ji.
The man in sunglasses and suit was stunned, and Mr. Ji looked somewhat surprised. “Then what do you want?”
“I want Ji Meng,” Shen Wan said. “You adults are really too horrible, trying to separate us just because our family backgrounds are different.”
188: He didn’t hear anything.
“I heard your mother…”
“Mr. Ji, a big shot like you shouldn’t stoop to bothering small fries like us. Please don’t trouble my mother because of my relationship with Ji Meng.”
Mr. Ji frowned. “That’s not what I meant.”
“I mean, I can help your mother find an easy job. How about that? The neighborhood you live in isn’t very safe either. I can give you a house.”
“Mr. Ji, Ji Meng is my only friend. You’re being too cruel!”
Mr. Ji thought: Is there something wrong with this child’s brain? That’s not what he meant! Wasn’t she the top student in her grade? Were the teachers grading papers with their eyes closed?
“Dad! What are you doing?”
None of them had expected Ji Meng to push open the office door at this moment. Although her beautiful face didn’t show anger, those familiar with her could sense her displeasure.
Her gaze swept across the office before landing on Shen Wan. Shen Wan quickly ran over and grabbed Ji Meng’s arm. “Ji Meng, Mr. Ji wanted to bribe me with money. He first offered a check, then a house, and even said he’d arrange an easy job for my mom. Don’t worry, we promised to be friends for life. I won’t stop being your friend for these things.”
“No amount of money can compare to you as a good friend. If I lose you, I’ll never find such a beautiful girl to be friends with again.”
Ji Meng laughed. “Mm, you do have good taste.”
Hearing Shen Wan’s flattery, Mr. Ji was also somewhat shocked. So this was the girl who had made his daughter willing to get close to her, his daughter’s first friend. Was this how they interacted? It really opened his eyes.
After leaving the school and getting in the car, Mr. Ji finally said, “That girl is very different from what I imagined.”
“Does Mr. Ji mean that she’s not vain or greedy, and only wants to be friends with the young miss?”
“No,” Mr. Ji was silent for a moment before saying, “I strongly suspect her first place in academics might have been achieved by flattering the teachers.”
“Mr. Ji, our country’s exams are quite strict.”
Recalling how Ji Meng smiled happily when Shen Wan flattered her, Mr. Ji’s mood improved somewhat. “Although it’s different from what I expected, her unexpected appearance has made Little Meng much better. I won’t interfere in this matter.”
“The young miss will certainly get better and better.”
“It was all my carelessness.”
“Mr. Ji isn’t omniscient. How could you have anticipated so many things?”
