A Silent Human

Chapter 14: Chapter 14: Struggles

Life rarely goes the way people want.

Money, location, family, love... The list goes on, each carrying its own problems that test a person.

If they could weather the storm of their struggles, they might come out stronger. But more often than not they'd emerge broken as they realized another hurdle awaited them.

"Lieutenant Takeshi! Most of the members and civilians have been evacuated!"

I turned to one of my younger brothers in the Yakuza and gave a curt nod in response.

"The Boss and the Ghoul Division have intercepted the army and the CCG." he added.

Again, I nodded and gestured for him to leave and join the others where the people had been evacuated. He hesitated but finally agreed.

"Lieutenant!" he shouted as I started running. I slowed my pace glancing back to hear him out.

"It's been an honor!" he called out.

I managed a faint smile before frowning, pushing myself to run faster. My destination? the chaos where Renji and the others were fighting.

As I passed the buildings, anger boiled within me, the report from four hours ago replaying in my head.

'I didn't think the government would see us as such a threat that they'd send the army.'

I could still picture Renji's face when we heard the news, how he paled and clutched his chest as the report was read.

'The CCG is probably here for the Ghouls.'

My frown deepened, and I forced myself to run even faster. Gunfire and screams grew louder, the sounds dragging me closer to the battlefield. Finally, I spotted three empty buses ahead.

~Renji POV~

It happened so fast.

'This shouldn't even be happening—'

"Shit!" I hissed, gritting my teeth as a bullet tore through my shoulder. I ducked behind cover next to Himari, speaking to her over the deafening noise.

"I'm sorry!" I said, my voice strained.

She didn't turn to me, her gaze fixed elsewhere.

"I'm sorry for bringing you here! I should've orde—"

She flicked me on the forehead, cutting me off, her eyes still locked ahead.

"Moron. Would you look over there?!"

Rubbing my head, I followed her gaze and blinked in sheer disbelief.

"Did you forget what we have?" Himari said, finally turning to me with a mix of relief and exasperation.

"We have Takeshi."

I nodded, though relief mingled with bewilderment. Takeshi stood in the distance, holding two buses—two buses—with a third being dragged behind him by thick wire.

"Is he—?"

"Everyone, take fucking cover!" I bellowed, grabbing Himari and another yakuza member to pull them into a secure spot.

From there, I watched in stunned silence as Takeshi hefted one of the buses like it weighed nothing. With a roar that cracked the ground beneath him, he hurled it like a spear toward the army and the CCG.

The explosion that followed sent shockwaves through the battlefield.

"Holy shit." I muttered, staring wide-eyed.

~Takeshi POV~

'Didn't think that would actually work.'

I shook off the thought as the first bus descended, crashing into an army vehicle and erupting into flames. A dozen soldiers went down with it.

I turned to the second bus, lifting it as easily as the first and hurled it. As it arced through the air, I pulled the third bus toward where Renji and the others were hiding.

"Holy shit." I heard Renji mutter.

Snorting, I gestured for him and the others to board the bus.

"What?!" Renji protested. "We can't leave! They'll gain more traction!"

I shook my head and pointed to myself, trying to make it clear. Renji, to my surprise, grabbed me by the collar.

"I'm not leaving you!" he snapped.

I turned to Himari, giving her a meaningful look. Her eyes widened as realization struck.

Turning back to Renji, I smiled faintly and nodded.

"Good. Now—"

Before he could react, I chopped the back of his neck knocking him unconscious. I handed him off to Himari who immediately carried him toward the bus.

As the enemy's approach grew louder, I turned back to the fight. Grabbing a pole, I ripped it from the ground and charged headlong into the chaos.

~Six Months Later~

"Welcome to Anteiku."

The bored voice of a young woman greeted Renji as he stepped into the café. He gave a nod to the emo looking girl before scanning the room. His gaze landed on Daiki, sitting at a table.

"Just a black coffee, please." he said. The girl nodded and walked off as Renji approached the boy.

"How are you, kid?"

Daiki hummed before letting out a soft laugh, confusing Renji.

"I found it." Daiki said simply.

Raising an eyebrow, Renji sat down and took the paper Daiki handed him. His eyes widened as he read it.

"I found him, Renji."

Renji's grip tightened on the paper, his jaw clenching as anger simmered beneath the surface.

'Those bastards.'

Looking up, he met Daiki's determined gaze.

"Takeshi's being held in Cochlea." the boy said.

The End

{Author here, so.. I've become slightly disinterested in this fic for now and instead of leaving it without a ending I've thought it best to leave it on a cliff hanger, is it a great cliff hanger? Probably not but it's what I came up with and decided to roll with it as if I ever revisit this I can expand upon how the MC was captured.}
