Chapter 3: Meet the Dunphys

Opening Interview

Jay:

"You know, when I was a kid, you didn't just let strangers into your house. You locked your doors, kept your head down, and hoped your neighbors weren't too nosy. But now? Now, I've got a 16-year-old living under my roof, cooking breakfast, calling me 'sir' like I'm some general, and—get this—he even makes his bed every morning. I mean, what kind of teenager does that?" (Jay shakes his head, clearly confused but oddly impressed.)

Gloria:

"I love Jon! He is polite, handsome, and speaks perfect Spanish! Manny finally has someone in this house who understands him. And he eats everything I make, unlike some people." (She shoots a look off-camera, presumably at Jay.)

Manny:

"Jon is more than just a houseguest. He's… a mentor. A brother. A guiding light in a world of chaos." (Pauses, then looks thoughtful.) "Also, he taught me how to do a proper push-up."

Brunch with the Dunphys

The warm California sun beamed down as Jay set the table in the backyard. Sundays were for family brunch, and today was no different—except that for the first time, Jon would be meeting the Dunphys.

Jay wasn't nervous about how the family would react to Jon. He was a good kid, respectful, disciplined. But if anyone could find a way to complicate things, it was Claire.

"Alright, everyone, behave," Jay muttered as he adjusted the plates.

The sound of a car door slamming signaled their arrival.

"Grandpa!" Luke's voice rang out before he came sprinting into the backyard, immediately stopping when he saw Jon. His eyes went wide. "Whoa. Who's this guy?"

Before Jay could answer, Phil, Claire, Alex, and Haley filed in.

"Wow," Phil said, sizing Jon up. "You must be… the mysterious Jon. I gotta say, you've got a real 'cool guy in a movie' vibe. Are you in a band? No, wait—martial artist. Am I right?"

Jon, used to overenthusiastic dads, smirked. "Something like that."

Claire, ever the suspicious one, narrowed her eyes. "So, how exactly do you know my dad?"

Jay sighed. "Claire, this isn't an interrogation."

"It's okay," Jon said, effortlessly calm. "My grandfather and Jay were friends. He passed away recently, so Jay offered to let me stay here until I turn 18."

That seemed to soften Claire a bit, but she wasn't convinced yet. "And… how old are you?"

"Sixteen," Jon replied.

Haley, who had been busy scrolling through her phone, suddenly looked up. "Wait… you're sixteen?"

Jon nodded.

She gave him a slow once-over. "Huh."

Alex crossed her arms. "Don't get any ideas, Haley."

Haley scoffed. "I was just… surprised. He looks older, that's all."

Jon chuckled. "I get that a lot."

Manny, eager to show off his new favorite person, stepped forward. "Jon has been living with us for a few days now, and I must say, he is a remarkable human being. A man of discipline, wisdom, and—"

"Okay, Shakespeare, let's eat," Jay interrupted.

Jon had already mastered the Pritchett household, but the Dunphys? They were a different beast.

Luke, fascinated by Jon's presence, leaned in. "Can you do any cool flips?"

Jon smirked. "I can, but I probably shouldn't at the table."

Phil perked up. "You know, I did gymnastics back in college. A little parallel bar action, some pommel horse. Maybe we could compare notes!"

Jon, ever polite, just nodded. "That sounds… interesting."

Jay groaned. "Phil, for the love of God, eat your pancakes."

Claire, still in full interrogation mode, leaned forward. "So, Jon, what do you do? Besides cooking breakfast and, apparently, being Manny's life coach?"

Jon took a sip of his juice before answering. "Mostly school and martial arts. I've competed in a few tournaments."

Jay, not one to miss an opportunity, added, "And I just taught him football. Kid's a natural."

Phil's eyes widened. "Football? Oh man, this is great! Luke, this is your chance! You need an older guy to show you the ropes. A mentor. Like Yoda, but taller."

Luke, mouth full of pancakes, nodded enthusiastically.

Alex, ever the skeptic, adjusted her glasses. "So let me get this straight—you're a straight-A student, a martial artist, a cook, and now a football player? Are you a government experiment?"

Jon laughed. "Not that I know of."

Haley, still watching him with interest, leaned on her hand. "So… do you have a girlfriend?"

Manny nearly choked on his orange juice. Jon, unfazed, just smiled. "Nope."

Haley nodded, satisfied. "Cool."

Claire sighed. "Okay, I get it, he's great. But, Dad, are you sure about this? I mean, you barely let me have friends over when I was a kid."

Jay rolled his eyes. "Claire, relax. The kid's not some criminal. He's a good influence on Manny, he makes a killer breakfast, and he doesn't talk back. If anything, you should be asking me where I can get another one."

Jon smirked but stayed silent. He knew when to let others do the talking.

Phil clapped his hands together. "Well, I, for one, think Jon is a fantastic addition to the family. And you know what? Let's make it official—Jon, you're one of us now."

Jon raised an eyebrow. "That easy, huh?"

Phil grinned. "That's the Dunphy way!"

Claire groaned. "No, it's not."

Manny, proud as ever, leaned in. "Welcome to the family, Jon."

Jon smiled. Maybe living in the Modern Family universe wouldn't be so bad after all.

Closing Interview

Jay:

"Alright, I'll admit it. I like the kid. He's got discipline, he's got respect, and best of all—he doesn't whine. You hear that, Phil?"

Phil: (laughing)

"Oh, I get it, Jay. You pretend to be grumpy, but deep down, you care. It's adorable. Like a grizzly bear that secretly loves hugs."

Claire:

"I still don't know how I feel about this. He seems great, but it's weird, right? Just… a random teenager in my dad's house? Then again, compared to some of the people we've had in this family, he's probably the least concerning."

Manny: (smiling)

"Today was a good day. Brunch was delicious, and Jon's place in the family feels secure. If only all things in life could be this harmonious."

Haley: (grinning)

"Okay, I know what you're thinking. And no, I'm not into him. Yet." (winks at the camera.)

Jon: (smirking)

"I gotta say, this family's a lot… but I think I can handle it."
