I'm Really Not A Nen Exorcist (HxH Fanfic)

Chapter 479: Chapter 479 The First Target

A few minutes after the samurai's arrival, the elevator room began delivering more examinees to the passage.

In less than fifteen minutes, over a dozen candidates gathered there.

They habitually observed the environment and soon noticed Moses's presence.

"What's going on?!"

What attracted their attention was, of course, the Netero mask on Moses's face.

All the examinees who took the test, whether they were veterans or newcomers, basically recognized the world-renowned Chairman Netero.

This familiarity allowed them to quickly realize something was off amid their initial shock.

"Oh, it's a mask. This guy… is really bold."

Despite the dim lighting in the passage, the candidates could clearly see the peculiarities of the silicone mask and the number plate on Moses's chest.

To think there are actually examinee who dare to wear a mask of the Hunter Association's Chairman to take the Hunter Exam...

The examinees couldn't help but feel intrigued and kept stealing glances at Moses, puzzled by the sight.

On top of the pipe.

As Moses watched more and more examinees arriving at the passage, he jumped off the pipe and leaned against the wall.

Compared to a three-meter-high pipe, standing in a place with stronger light would make him more eye-catching.

As expected, the examinees' attention gravitated toward him, with each new candidates turning to look at him, who is leaning against the wall.

The presence of the Netero mask was simply too eye-catching.

As time passed, the elevator's frequency noticeably increased, and more and more examinees came into the passage.

On the surface, Moses stood with his back against the wall, arms folded and head lowered in silence.

However, he discreetly observed each arriving examinee through the vision of his shadow clone.

So far, Moses has not seen any 'familiar' faces among the examinees.

Just then, the sound of pressurized air signaled the elevator doors opening once more.

Then, a man with a buzz cut, thick eyebrows and a garlic nose, and a khaki canvas bag slung around his waist walked out of the elevator room.

The man who just arrived at the passage was none other than Tonpa, the infamous 'Rookie Crusher'.

Moses's shadow clone immediately focused on Tonpa as he arrived.

'Finally, a familiar face had appeared.'

Moses's lips curled slightly.

Tonpa, unaware that his former 'shadow' was lurking nearby, strode quickly into the passage, casting a swift glance over the other candidates gathered.

'35, almost all of them are veterans.'

Tonpa's extensive experience came into play at this moment, and he was able to distinguish the veteran examinees among the crowd present in an instant.

"Hmm?!"

His gaze naturally also landed on Moses wearing the Netero mask, and he couldn't help but feel a flicker of shock.

'Is he a newbie or a veteran?'

Because Moses was wearing a mask, Tonpa couldn't quite determine Moses's identity.

After a moment's thought, he glanced over at the samurai man wearing number plate #1.

The man exuded a hostile aura that made Tonpa immediately abandon any notion of approaching him.

Instead, he directed his attention to Moses, who, despite wearing a mask, didn't seem dangerous at first glance, so Tonpa thought it might be worth attempting a conversation.

Compared to the arrogant samurai, Moses, who was disguised as an ordinary person at this time, was indeed far less intimidating to the samurai.

Therefore, there is nothing wrong with Tonpa's judgment, which is based on his rich experience.

This also indirectly shows that Moses's current control over his Aura has enabled him to disguise himself as an ordinary person almost perfectly.

Through the vision provided by the shadow clone, Moses watched as Tonpa approached him.

'So, he's set his sights on me? Then don't blame me for paying in kind.'

Moses thought to himself.

"Hey."

Tonpa came to Moses, greeted him in a familiar manner, and asked, "Is this your first time taking the Hunter Exam?"

"Yes."

Moses tilted his head to look at Tonpa and asked naturally, "Is this your first time too?"

Tonpa's eyes flickered slightly, and he shook his head and said, "No, I've taken it many times before."

As he said this, he sighed and said in a self-deprecating manner:

"The pass rate for the Hunter Exam is extremely low. People like me always get left behind halfway through due to lack of ability. I might never get my Hunter License no matter how hard I try, but giving up would feel like defeat. So, I sign up for the Hunter Exam every year, hoping for another chance."

"That must mean you're really experienced with the exam, right?"

Moses's masked face turned toward Tonpa, his tone conveying a clear sense of interest.

A glint of triumph flickered deep in Tonpa's eyes. He selectively ignored the weird feeling brought by the mask and laughed:

"That's probably the one thing I can actually take pride in. My name's Tonpa. What's yours?"

"Illumi."

"Oh, Illumi, feel free to ask me if you have any questions."

"Alright, that's really helpful. Thanks."

Moses said gratefully.

"No need to be so formal. Whenever I see a newbie, it reminds me of how I used to be. Sigh..."

Tonpa pretended to sigh, then clapped his hands and said, "Oh, right! I brought plenty of drinks with me, Illumi, do you want some?"

After saying that, he took out a can of drink from his khaki canvas bag.

"Thank you. Don't mind if I do."

Moses happily took the drink handed to him by Tonpa.

Tonpa showed a kind smile, but he was laughing sinisterly in his heart.

He added a strong laxative to the drink, but such a method was at best child's play for him, who was known as the Rookie Crusher.

Moses then opened the can and took a large sip right in front of Tonpa.

The corner of Tonpa's mouth moved imperceptibly.

"Oh, I see a friend of mine over there," Tonpa said suddenly, raising his hand to wave toward a distant candidate, "If you need anything, don't hesitate to ask."

The candidate obviously knew Tonpa. He showed a sly smile and raised his hand to greet Tonpa.

Moses glanced in the direction of Tonpa's acquaintance, noting the candidate's grin as he waved back at Tonpa. Nodding, Moses replied, "Alright, got it."

"See you in a bit, then."

Tonpa smiled, then walked towards the candidate with a relaxed and natural pace.

With a calm gaze, Moses watched Tonpa's retreating back, then casually tilted the drink can, pouring some liquid onto his shadow.

A faint hissing sound followed as a small amount of liquid dripped onto Moses's shadow.

Then, his shadow, which had been lying still, rippled like water, encased the spilled drink and then silently chased after Tonpa.

In just a few seconds, the shadow carrying the drink reached Tonpa's back, merging seamlessly with Tonpa's shadow.

About a second later…

Moses's shadow broke away from Tonpa's shadow, but the encased drink was nowhere to be seen.

"Good luck, rookie crusher."

Moses murmured as he retrieved his shadow.

'The specially controlled dosage of laxatives should allow Tonpa to barely hold on to the second phase.'

'But if Tonpa is willing to force himself to participate in the second phase, then...'

'Well, someone might not make it out alive.'
