Chapter 9 - Something’s Off Here, Right?
Her voice arrived before she did.
Su Yu’s body stiffened, a wave of nerves hitting him.
It wasn’t just his first meeting with his sister—there were also those awkward moments between her and his predecessor.
He frantically dug through his mind for every scrap of memory about Su Muqing, only then realizing why this brother-obsessed sister, who usually popped by every other day, had held off for so long this time.
The old Su Yu was a naive little thing, but he wasn’t!
Dredging up a recent memory, Su Yu couldn’t help wanting to slap his past self.
Growing up together, Su Yu and Su Muqing had always been close—close enough that, even near adulthood, they’d sometimes share a bed.
Of course, it was perfectly innocent, just pure caretaking.
Whether it was Su Yu or Su Muqing, they both acted out of familial love, not a hint of impure thoughts in their hearts.
What bad intentions could there be between siblings?
That’s what they both believed.
With their parents perpetually busy and rarely around to look after them, the siblings leaned on each other.
Aside from Su Mengyi, that flirty oddball, Su Yu and Su Muqing’s bond stayed pure.
But now that they were grown, even family had to observe boundaries—and there was a reason for that.
In his memories, Su Yu saw it: not long before he transmigrated, on a stormy night with pouring rain and booming thunder, Su Muqing—knowing her brother feared thunder—came over to protect him.
That alone wasn’t a big deal.
But the rain that night was relentless, showing no sign of stopping. Feeling bad for his sister, Su Yu let her sleep with him.
He’d heard of propriety between men and women, but book knowledge felt shallow. Plus, Su Muqing was his sister—they’d shared a bed as kids—so he didn’t think much of it.
Except they were in the flush of youth, bodies fully matured. With his sister in just a nightgown, Su Yu realized some things had changed. Her sweet, girlish scent stirred an inevitable reaction.
He didn’t know what Su Muqing was thinking—whether she felt uneasy too. Women’s physiology hid such things better, but for boys, it was different.
When Su Muqing gave him a weird look, asking if he’d brought a dagger to bed because something was poking her stomach, Su Yu actually denied it.
How dumb could he be? She was clearly offering him an out!
But the old Su Yu told the truth:
“It’s not a dagger. I’m confused too—wanna check it out, Sis?”
Su Muqing was floored. Even through memory, Su Yu could feel how awkward the air got.
Sixteen years of life, sheltered like a gilded canary.
“Damn it!”
Su Yu burned with shame. How was he supposed to know his predecessor had pulled such a blunder?
Obviously, Su Muqing had been embarrassed and deliberately avoided her beloved brother. After a few days, she’d finally shaken off the awkwardness and come to see him.
“Little brother, there you are! Sorry, I’ve been so busy lately—I haven’t had much time to visit. You… you’re not mad at me, are you?”
A crisp, melodic voice rang out as a young woman’s radiant face entered Su Yu’s view.
She looked about seventeen or eighteen. Her sleek black dress was sharp and neat, her dark hair tied into a spirited ponytail.
The young woman strode forward on long, slender legs, her pretty red lips pursed slightly, her lovely eyes watching Su Yu with a hint of worry.
This was Su Muqing, the eldest daughter of the Su family and Su Yu’s sister. Only two years older, she was nothing like her sheltered little brother. At a young age, she’d taken over the family business.
Sharp and capable, she excelled in both martial arts and commerce, showing rare talent.
In the sprawling Qiluo City, Su Muqing stood out among the younger generation.
Yet despite her achievements, in front of her brother, she was just a doting, protective sister.
“Of course I’m not mad at you, Sis.”
Mimicking his predecessor’s tone, Su Yu smiled, sneaking a curious glance at Su Muqing’s chest.
Yep… flat as a board!
Not a curve in sight—honestly, it was kind of sad.
Su Muqing caught his pitying look and frowned. Was there something on her face?
“How’s your homework been lately?”
She lowered her head, eyes dropping. She worried that staring at him too long might make her rush over and pull him into a hug.
Su Muqing sat on a stool, pouring tea for Su Yu and herself.
Sipping the tea, Su Yu grumbled, “Homework? Come on, Sis, you know how it is…”
This so-called “homework” was just needlework and embroidery—girly stuff.
Handkerchiefs, clothes, women’s skirts, underwear—most of it came from men’s hands.
In this world, men had no martial prowess, couldn’t do much, and couldn’t show their faces in public. They were stuck with these fiddly tasks.
The old Su Yu hated everything about it, but on this one thing, the new Su Yu agreed.
“You can’t keep going like this, little brother. Sure, they say a man without talent is virtuous, but these basic skills are a must for boys. If you’ve got no talent at all, your future wife might end up despising you.”
Su Muqing’s face grew complicated, some bad memory souring her mood instantly.
“I heard you’ve been wanting to cultivate lately?”
Snapping back to her visit’s purpose, Su Muqing forced herself to perk up.
How did everyone seem to know about his cultivation thing?
Su Yu felt like he was being watched, but he knew it was just concern.
He nodded, not hiding it, and said glumly, “Sis, don’t bother persuading me—I’ve given up. I don’t have the talent for it.”
What protagonist? Chosen one? All fake. He was just an ordinary transmigrator—Su Yu had come to terms with that.
The young man’s face showed deep disappointment, tugging at Su Muqing’s heart.
She’d always held him dear, pampered and loved him—seeing him like this hurt her terribly.
His brows furrowed, teeth nibbling his lip—Su Muqing couldn’t take it. She reached out, stroking his soft hair, and said tenderly, “Don’t be sad, little brother. It’s not your fault. It’s not that you lack talent—boys just can’t cultivate. Why force yourself? And don’t worry—your sister will always protect you!”
Feeling the gentle touch on his head, Su Yu blinked. He’d just been head-patted by a girl!
Sure, Su Muqing was his sister, and this was normal sibling closeness, but as a proud seven-foot man, wasn’t something off here?
