Chapter 46: It's been turbulent since the first event, Cavalry Battle
It’s been turbulent since the first event, Cavalry Battle
A month had passed since the order from young lady to crush the hero idiot and the subsequent decision to duel.
Late June… The peak of summer was approaching, and today, it was time for Senrin High School’s sports festival.
It felt like time had flown by.
Choosing the events for the sports festival, practicing for them, and juggling all of it with our regular studies and estate work had kept us incredibly busy.
The only silver lining might be that Yuto, the root of all these problems, seemed to be staying out of it.
According to a letter from the viscount, he had been training rigorously in preparation for our duel. I just wished he could channel that motivation into something else.
Another change I noticed was with Lilith.
Although she appeared normal on the surface, she occasionally wore an anxious expression. She hadn’t skipped her essence-sucking sessions, but her tone had grown weaker, and she didn’t seem as enthusiastic as before.
I also wasn’t in the best mood due to my worries, which resulted in it taking longer than usual.
I suspected that the amount of essence she was taking had decreased as well.
Sakura had offered to lend a listening ear multiple times, but Lilith kept refusing, saying that there was no need to worry. While it hadn’t affected her work performance, it wasn’t good for her to continue carrying these troubles.
I hoped that the sports festival would provide a much-needed change of pace.
Anyway, we sat through the lengthy opening ceremony, ignoring the principal’s speech.
Then, it was time for the first event of the sports festival: Cavalry Battle.
In this game, teams of four riders formed groups, and they competed based on the total number of headbands they managed to snatch from their opponents.
Disqualification only occurred if a rider fell off their horse, and even if your headband was taken, you could continue to participate.
The team with the highest number of captured headbands would win.
First up was the boys’ event, and our class was represented by me, riding the horse, Hakuma the unicorn, along with Tanaka from Earth and Jiro from the Dog Beastman race.
We had practiced extensively for this day, and we were determined to give it our all.
“All right, let’s go snatch some headbands!”
“Yeah!”
“I’ll leave our backs to you!”
“We’re gonna win, we’re gonna win!”
We were all eagerly preparing for the competition, and the boys from other classes and grades were equally excited.
Among them was Yuto, standing confidently as a rider.
When our eyes met, he openly glared at me. It seemed his hatred for me hadn’t waned over time. I wouldn’t be surprised if I were his first target.
“Let’s go, everyone!” I declared, determined to lead our class to victory, ignoring the looming duel.
Then, as the announcer gave the signal, we all moved into action.
With the signal, everyone began their charge, attempting to capture as many headbands as possible. It quickly turned into a chaotic melee of capturing and losing headbands.
“No, you should fall.”
“Let’s make him pay for what he’s done.”
“Huh?”
For some reason, I heard those voices from behind just as my body was unexpectedly lifted into the air, and I fell backward.
Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Tanaka and Jiro, who had supported me until now, deliberately distancing themselves with wicked grins on their faces.
At that moment, I realized something. These guys had planned to betray us from the beginning, hadn’t they?
When we decided to participate in the Cavalry Battle, I had found their sudden change in behavior suspicious. They had seemed cooperative, even saying that rumors weren’t reliable. I had let my guard down, thinking I might have been overly cautious, but they had ultimately betrayed us.
Yuto was one thing, but it felt like there were too many guys who disliked me. I couldn’t help but wonder if they were forming alliances to sabotage us.
I scolded myself for being too careless. But now, I had no time to dwell on it. If I fell from the horse, I would be disqualified, and the horse in front couldn’t support me in my current position.
Just as I was about to despair, someone called out,
“Isaya! Close your eyes and hold on tight!”
Huh…Haku–!?”
I was perplexed by the sudden voice from behind, but I reflexively did as instructed.
In an instant, a flash of light so bright that it was visible even behind closed eyelids enveloped me.
“Oops, things got started pretty quickly, didn’t they?” the voice of the commentator rang out.
Shortly after, I realized that my body, which should have fallen backward, felt stable. It was as if I were seated.
Feeling hesitant, I slowly opened my eyes, and before me, there was a horse with a pure white coat.
In a state of confusion, I looked around, only to find myself in a mounted position on the horse. I was bewildered by the rapid changes in the situation.
Frightened by the unexpected transformation, I tried to figure out what had happened.
The white horse turned its head towards me, revealing a silver horn on its forehead.
Wait a minute. Seriously?
“Hakuma?”
“Isaya, I’ve shown you this form for the second time. Are you uninjured?”
“I’m fine… but more importantly, didn’t you say you didn’t want to transform in front of people!? Why…”
Unicorns, mythical creatures known for their purity and rarity, usually avoided revealing their true forms.
I had heard it was to avoid drawing attention and to prevent anyone other than pure-hearted women from touching them.
Even Hakuma adhered to these principles, despite living in human form, he had always been averse to revealing his true unicorn form, especially in public.
Seeing him transform in front of a crowd during the school’s sports festival left me deeply bewildered.
In response to my distress, Hakuma let out a small snort.
“I know that, but when it’s my best friend’s life on the line, such principles seem insignificant. More importantly, the competition is still ongoing, right?”
“Ha-ha, you’re right. I’ve had experience with riding from my part-time job, so I’ll make the most of it. Go all out!”
“Don’t compare me, a Unicorn, to those ordinary horses. You might just get thrown off.”
With this lighthearted exchange, the unicorn leaped forward, passing between the bewildered pairs of riders from the other classes. I seized the opportunity and snatched their headbands.
“What just happened? I couldn’t see anything!”
“I can’t believe we lost our headbands!”
The riders from the other classes finally realized what had happened and began to panic.
“Nice job, Isaya.”
“Let’s kick it up a notch!”
“Go for it!”
While others were left behind, I and Hakuma continued to dominate the competition.
It was clear that there was no way the other teams, with regular horses, could catch up to us in a horseback race.
Our speed was on a different level, making it impossible for them to either escape or catch up.
Some riders from other classes tried to ambush us, but Hakuma adjusted his speed to throw off their timing, ensuring we remained in control.
I couldn’t help but appreciate how reliable my friend was in this situation.
Amid the chaos, some riders were left frustrated and complained to the referees, accusing us of cheating.
“Gaahhh, they took them all!!”
“What the hell is this? Is this even allowed!?”
“This is so unfair! It’s gotta be against the rules! Disqualify them now!”
The announcer intervened to address their complaints:
『 Well, Mr. Tsujizono didn’t fall off, and Mr. Hakuma was participating in the event from the beginning. Moreover, they haven’t used any magic, so your objections have been denied! 』
The disgruntled competitors continued to voice their frustrations
“Dammit, this sucks!”
Amidst the chaos and uproar, we continued to collect headbands without any reservations.
Actually, I was quietly concerned about the fact that it was a foul, so I was relieved to know that it was safe.
So, we unabashedly stole headbands from the other competitors.
However, as we continued to dominate the competition, a familiar voice suddenly called out to us.
“Stop right there, Isaya Tsujizono!”
The Hero stood before us, having collected three headbands, including his own.
“You think you can win by taking all the headbands? Well, come and fight us!”
“I’m not interested. See ya.”
“Huh?”
Yuto was taken aback by our decision, but from our perspective, there was no point in challenging him.
We already had enough headbands to secure the victory. Avoiding a confrontation and running out the clock was the smartest move.
“Don’t run away, coward!! Don’t run away!!!”
Ignoring the Hero’s shouting, we continued to evade him.
With his cries echoing in the background, we maintained our lead until the whistle signaling the end of the competition rang out.
──Pippi! !
The whistle that marked the end of the competition rang out loudly.
“Time’s up! Everyone, please stop moving. We’ll start the calculations now. But really, the result is as clear as day! First place goes to Class 2-C!”
The announcer’s enthusiastic voice rang through the stadium, and the girls in our class erupted into cheers. It seemed that the boys from our class had formed a coalition as well.
In contrast, the other classes seemed shaken by our dominance, perhaps realizing that their morale had taken a hit at the start of the first game.
Nevertheless, we celebrated our victory, knowing that we had contributed to our class’s success.
Once we touched the ground, Hakuma transformed back into his human form.
It was strange how his clothes remained the same.
I couldn’t help but wonder about the logistics of his transformation, but for now, I focused on our victory.
Thinking this, I raised my hand, and Hakuma silently raised his hand as well.
“Nice play.”
“Hmph. As long as you remain a virgin, I don’t mind you riding on my back.”
“I was hoping for more trust based on friendship.”
With a wry smile at my friend’s anticlimactic response, we finished the first event of the sports festival.
